Dude can get away with being King Dick in college because he's a dictator. NFL players were just tell him off. He'd be done in a year, two tops, before showing up in college again at a random ACC or Pac12 school

Just watch any of Kelly's press conferences the last 2 or 3 years.

The guy is fed up.

I don't know if its the AD, the press.  Something is off. And clearly he wants out.

Notre Dame went 10-3, won their bowl game, finishing 11th. The Irish were ranked as high as 3rd this year.

Third 10 win season over 8 years. A huge improvement over the train of failure from Davie, Willingham and Weis.  Kelly is equal to Dan Devine's achievements, but just below Holtz and Parseighian. He's left his mark already. But yeah, no national titles, which is not impossible for Notre Dame. It's just very unlikely. They had their shot and blew it against Alabama.

Notre Dame should love the man, or at least like him very much.

But they don't.  They seem to really dislike him.

The thing I will never forget about Kelly is that in 2016 he lost his team. They were gone. And the press fed on the man every week. He threw individual players under the bus, etc. But he survived and the 2017 team got better and stayed united.  I don't know how the fuck he did that, but it's a credit that the program didn't disintigrate.

One Foot Down, which is the SBNation blog that follows Notre Dame, is dubious of the idea that Kelly would take that interview and that, if he did, it managed to remain off the radar for as long as it apparently has. They do not dispute the notion that he might want an out though, which is interesting in and of itself.

Honestly, I expect that -- even beginning in late-January -- the replacement would be an improvement. It might not matter by week one of 2018 but in the long run, I believe ND can do much better and have glad to have Kelly there to limit their potential.

As for the silver lining that coulda been: If Kelly were to bolt, it's too bad this is Year #1 of the early signing period. Based on overlapping interest, location, and academic reputation, Michigan might have been better situated than any other program to raid the Irish class.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's using this to get leverage. He is criminally underpaid for the institution he's at and for some of the results he's gotten. He shouldn't be making Saban money but he should damn well be making more than $1.6 million a year.

But it could be genuine. I remember he interviewed with the Lions and Eagles (I think?) a couple years back so there has to be some level of interest there for him. South Bend is maybe an hour and a half away from Chicago so he wouldn't be moving very far. Would sure as hell love to see him head out of South Bend and see ND scramble to find a coach in February.

Whatever makes our matchup with them easier.

Forget whether he'd be offerred the job, what does this say to his furture/potential/undecided recruits?  It says one thing - the head coach wants out.

He might have interviewed to gain leverage in a pay dispute.  He might have done it as a personal favor to someone with the Bears.  He might have done it for his wife.  Who knows?  Who cares?  Who gives a damn?

But it tells recruits that he wants out.  Or, at least, wouldn't hestitate to go for the offer...

I don't want him gone just yet. Hopefully we can kick the shit out of them on their turf this coming season. Then that little bitch can leave.

I live and am from the burbs of Chicago I was happy that they hired someone else for at least 3 more years. There was constant talk of harbaugh until the signing. He needs to stay in Ann Arbor and finish the job. I think they have him for at least 3-4 more years

Very interesting if true. Not a fan of Kelly but Harbaugh has the exact same record as Kelly after 3 seasons. Although this depends on when the NCAA rules on the appeal by ND of vacated victories from 2012 and 2013. Not sure what is taking so long.

As a bears fan thank the lord he was not hired. I like what they have done with the staff, but they still need to draft/free agent pick up a whole new offense or they will be stuck at the bottom of the nfc north for a long time
