Sam Webb's Gut Says Shea Patterson Not Going to Transfer to Michigan

Submitted by Tedbossman on

His gut tells him Michigan is extremely happy with Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffrey. He was told that if Patterson transfers it would be out west, where there are more desirable QB scenarios. He also says Patterson would have to sit out a year.

Speight graduated and has every right and ability to leave on his own without Michigan's permission. It's entirely possible he talked with Harbaugh, Harbaugh told him he could compete but Peters would be in front of him at the moment, and Speight decided he'd rather go start somewhere his 5th year rather than be 2nd string

Depth is a slight concern for me. As injuries happen, like this year, you can't have enough QB's ready to go. That said, I'm really, really looking forward to the Peters/McCaffrey QB competition.

You aren't going to get a backup QB via transfer.  I'm not even sure why Patterson would be interested in Michigan in the first place with potentially 2 returning starters(prior to Speight news) who have looked good before.  Most QB transfers go places where they are almost guaranteed to start, and I'm sure there are much better places that don't have 2 top 150 QBs already on the roster and with 1+ years in the system.

You're right but Patterson is probably still the best of the 3. We're fine without him but Eason or Patterson would still raise some eyebrows on the coaching staff. I think he would be best served out west at this point as there are a couple teams that could use him.

Malzone is gone too

Depth chart likely

1 - Peters

2 - McCaffrey

3 - Doyle - burn red shirt if needed - more ready than Milton

4 - Milton - RS

it's all JH QB's now baby!!!!!

very-high-ceiling type prospect which is why he is rated so highly.  Think Shane Morris arm talent but similar HS completion rates.

I don't know much about Doyle but he is playing "better" per the stats against pretty good competition in the DC area, so I assume he would be more ready and have a higher floor than Milton.

That said, I am very excited to see what Coach H. can do with Milton after a few years.

Milton had Denard Robinson type passing numbers in HS,  without the rushing.

Milton (3 years): 47%,  3975 yards, 35TD, 19INT, 366 rushing yards

Denard (3 years): 45%, 4784 yards, 1132 yards rushing

The dude has a super strong arm... but he is not accurate, and has a wonky throwing motion... and he is a pro style QB who isn't very fast (4.8 40).

to hear at some point Sam's "gut" telling him an elite offensive play maker will be coming to Michigan.

IF Patterson is as good as advertised and better than who we have here, I'd want him at Michigan.

Most OL grad transfers are probably not that good. The reason most QB’s grad transfer is because you can only play 1 at a time, and they go to a school where they will get that opportunity. As an OL, if you can’t get in the starting group after 4 years you probably are not going to find a starting gig at another major program.

For the first time in a long time, I am confident the offense will be much improved next season QB: Peters (McAffery) RB: Higdon (Evans, Walker) FB: Mason WR: DPJ (Crawford, Schoenele) WR: Black (Collins, McDoom) Slot: Perry (Martin) TE: McKeon (Eubanks, Bunting) TE: Gentey (Wheatley) LT: Spanellis (Newsome?) LG: Onwenu C: Ruiz RG: Brederson RT: JBB

as will Spanellis.  I think I heard that Spanellis was also repping at Center, so he is probably your backup C as well.  We heard good things about J'Raymond Hall in the spring and maybe Ulizio would fit better as a guard...think that is your interior group unless they also flip Paea back to offense as a guard.

I think JBB can be a "serviceable" RT next year - great in the run game and hopefully OK as a pass protector.  I think Filiaga best fits the mold of a RT so I expect he will be backup.

If Newsome cannot come back and they don't move Bredeson outside, I think Steuber and Hudson (getting a lot of buzz - about potential not necessarily performance) will battle for LT.  It would be nice if the "little brother" tackle from Florida commits but I swear I saw his weight listed as 260 which -if true- leads to doubts whether he would be ready as a true Frosh.  The other 2 OT recruits for this year definitely need to bulk up for a year or two before they ideally see the field

I am an eternal optimist and thus I have a hard time seeing this OL being anything other than much better at least by the time confernece play comes around next year.  Might be a bit of a bummer with ND early on but at least they will be able to practice as a unit as early as bowl practices in a few weeks.

We’ll still be relying heavily on a lot of unknown commodities next year. Black has to come back from injury and show the same promise that he flashed early. The tackle slot is a big question mark as well. Will Newsome be the same guy he was pre-injury. JBB was better than the kid he replaced, yet was still average at best. Onwenu was up and down all season, Ruiz flashed some potential. The upside is there on offense, but far from a lock to be an outstanding unit.
