Debate proposition: Dantonio is the best coach in the B!G.
I'm sure many negs are due this OP, but I just watched the MSU game and when I think of this:
-3-9
-lost best their WR and several contributors due to scandal
-are along with M, the youngest team in the nation
-have objectively, factually, worse talent than any of the league elite, including us
-are playing walk ons at key positions
-had a terrible recruiting year yet are playing freshmen
-beat us at home and just beat PSU, another team with far superior talent to them...
I can't come to any other conclusion than the title of this post. I am all Harbaugh, and I think our future still is brighter than most in the league. I wouldn't want any other coach for Michigan. But damn IMO this is hard to refute. But I'm wide open to counter arguments. Have any?

MSU plays down to bad competition and basically punches good competition in the mouth. A lot of 4* and 5* players do not respond well to that due to basically being coddled compared to the overachieving 3*.... Coach Dantonio gets his team to completely embrace the underdog role.

I disagree actually. I think it's a combo of being a good coach and being the luckiest coach possibly ever. Or he sold his soul to the devil. One of the 2.

How did they "make" their own luck in the 2015 Michigan game when Blake O'Neill dropped a punt on a fluke play? Or the 2015 Ohio State game, which was just Urban Meyer inexplicably turning away from Elliott? Or against Penn State when an open Penn State receiver has the ball go through his hands which would have had Penn State in position for a field goal late to win the game as time expired?
Honestly, Dantonio has just had the chips fall his way more often than not. He's a very good coach, but his record and prestige has been elevated by fortune.

No doubt he is one of the best. I also think the weather played a big part in the wins over PSU and Michigan just as the delay on their trip to Evanston played a role in their loss at Northwestern.
He is the perfect coach for that team and may have won a natty if there had been a playoff in 2013.

A coach who prides himself on coaching his players to behave like thugs on and off the field. He may win more games with lesser talent, but in my world "best" requires more.
November 4th, 2017 at 7:39 PM ^
Absolutely he is the best. But seems to get many of the big games in the rain, which tends to play right into his hands.

fair enough right this second he is coach of the year in B1G, but don't tell me he is a better coach than Meyer that is a joke. He went 3-9 last year, that happened.
November 4th, 2017 at 10:03 PM ^
I said nothing of the sort.
My only point was that THIS YEAR, he's the best coaching job in the conference. We'll worry about the future in the future. It might snow then. I don't know.

The guy is a walking mood ring.
November 4th, 2017 at 7:42 PM ^
No, it's still Meyer. Getting talent is part of the game. I'll take the guy that has 3 national titles and winning percentage over 90 (despite today's hilarious result)
November 4th, 2017 at 7:58 PM ^
No idea how it took to the 39th comment to say Urban. Guy has won everywhere, today was his 8th total loss while hes coaching in his 6th season. As much as I hate that guy I would have loved if Michigan had hired him over Brady Hoke.
I also wish Dave Brandon wasn't such a dick and would have wooed Harbaugh the way he should have and hired him over Hoke.
November 4th, 2017 at 7:58 PM ^
Correct. The object is to win each contest. Meyer has the national titles, the win percentage, and hasn't even had a losing record in a season.
Dantonio is second as it pertains to this conference (note: this isn't the NFL), and Harbaugh may be third, though at this point Franklin has a Big Ten title that he doesn't.
November 4th, 2017 at 8:02 PM ^
While recruiting is part of the job, I would like know what Dantonio could do with the talent OSU or UM has.

OK, Urban Meyer has 3 national titles between 2 different schools. He is probably a top 5 all time coach, how the fuck is Dantonio in that class? Dantonio is a really good coach but what has he won? Ask a legit title contending team how much they care about the B1G title which is Dantonio's ceiling. Also recruiting is part of being a coach, he should not get credit for lower rated classes performing. I swear the MSU slurping is unbelieveable, ferentz has accomplished as much as Dantonio.

that is impossible to know if he is doing as well as someone can and its just stupid excuses that MSU fans and radio hosts use all the time. If MSU loses to Northwestern no big deal, if Michigan loses to Northwestern we would have got lambasted on tv and radio and they would be saying Harbaugh is on the hot seat. MSU is a B1G school with plenty of resources to win big, Dantonio just can't get them over the hump.
November 4th, 2017 at 8:01 PM ^
Exactly, He doesn't just win championships. He wins 9 out of 10 games all the time. 8th loss in 6 years today is pretty nuts.

November 4th, 2017 at 7:44 PM ^
Nope. 96-44 is certainly good but it's not amazing. It's not like he's doing this at Rutgers either.
Still has to be Urban because they've just had more (and greater) success on the field. Isn't that what it's about?

-3-9
-lost best their WR and several contributors due to scandal
-are along with M, the youngest team in the nation

-are playing walk ons at key positions
-had a terrible recruiting year yet are playing freshmen
All these are points against him being the best coach (unless you mean strictly development/game-planning, but recruiting and roster management are pretty important parts of the job too). Best at making the most of least, sure. But Meyer has three championships, Dantonio made the playoff once and got embarassed. No comparison.
