OT: Patriots Trade Jimmy Garappolo to 49ers for 2nd Round Pick
The quarterback of the future for the New England Patriots is Tom Brady.
To repeat: 49ers are trading a 2018 2nd-round draft pick for Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo, sources tell ESPN.

He had a good season with KC and led the Chiefs to the playoffs.

Yeah, one good season. Hasn't had a winning season since. "Fizzled" is correct.

Jimmy G is still on his rookie deal, probably making under $1 million this year. Not much cap space to gain from that.

Everyone applauded that trade when it happened but yes it was a definite win for Arizona. However the Pats had their hands tied. Hightower, Jones and Collins were all coming up on FA contracts and all wanted top $ for their position. The Pats had to choose. They chose Hightower. Additionally Jamie Collins didnt give a shit his last year in NE and I havent heard much about him since he got the mega contract from Cleveland.
Cooks trade was great. He is 23. If he was in last years draft he is picked in the top 10 easy, the pats got him for #32.

It's a good trade for the 49ers if he's really a starting-level QB. I have my doubts, so this will probably turn out to be a better deal for the Patriots than SF.

Brady's still playing at a high level, and Kraft has seen the writing on the wall that Brandon Peters is his next franchise qb.
Really smart move though. Qbs always seemed to get overpaid after their rookie deal for playing decent in garbage time. Osweilier, Matt schaub, Matt flynn, etc

This would be a perfect time for Brady to miss a step in that mansion.

that NE takes a QB with that pick, right?
Also, the Broncos are the Michigan football of the NFL.

it only takes a bad play in practice and NE suddenly is a ship without a rudder. or a ruddock.

Hoyer has already been released by SF. He was originally part of the trade, but if Hoyer had been traded instead of being released, the Patriots would have lost one of their two 4th-round compensatory picks -- it has something to do with when a player gets released during the season.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

have a warm body that knows the playbook and could step in to play. you are one play away from the patriots playing one of the WR/RB/DB's who played QB back in high school or something. very dangerous.

A 2nd for Jimmy G? In the off season all the rumors about teams lining up with big trade packages for Garoppolo, nothing. Schefter came on local sports talk show and got creamed when he announced the Patriots wouldn't trade Garoppolo for 4 1st round picks.
In a QB starved league, look at what some teams paid to move up for the Mitch Trabisky's and Jared Goff's? Garoppolo with a track record (limited) and apprecenticing under Belichick, Brady and McDaniels, and all they get is a 2nd? Since August, Belichick has traded Brissette, who's doing decent and Garoppolo for a receiver who's MIA and a 2nd. Unbelievable.
Last time the Pats had that high of a 2nd round pick, took an injured DB who lasted about a month.

Sounds they wanted to keep Garoppolo but the extension didn't work out. So Schefter wasn't wrong.
The mistake was in thinking he would want to stay on in his role as Brady's backup and New England's future. In the end, that wasn't enough.
Yet another way the Patriots got screwed when the NFL suspended Brady because he wouldn't give them access to his phone. Without the two quality starts in 2016 before he got injured, Jimmy G is just another promising but untested QB, far more likely to stay in the fold.

Actually the record is pretty good. Not as a star but for guys to hang around to make some $$. Cassel was a backup at SC and has hung around for 10+ years including a decent run at KC. Hoyer as an UFA, same thing. Mallett, well he will always be Mallett, but still in the league.
Garoppolo was the first "Brady replacement". Who knows, maybe Foxboro will be a destination for Speight. DID I ACTUALLY JUST THINK AND TYPE THAT????? Might be time go lay down.

1. Mike Silver, SI reporter who is best friends with Hue Jackson, was tweeting a LOT last night that Hue definitely wanted JG but has no control over FO decisions.
2. Hue Jackson's daughter was tweeting last night that the FO was doing nothing and not helping her dad get talent
3. Benjamin Albright just tweeted that he's recieved mulitple emails that the Browns coaching staff was working last night but the FO went home at 5pm. That the Browns coaching staff told the FO that JG was available and they wanted him but they went home at 5pm without contacting the Patriots.
4. Albright also tweeted that the Browns coaching staff is seething mad over the amount of work they are doing and that our Harvard-educated, non-football analytic front office doesnt put in the time nor the effort necessary to find and bring in talent necessary to win.
This thing is about to blow........wow.
