That clutch 3rd down conversion by O'Korn near our own endzone while eluding pressure. Holy shit! And we got a TD off of that drive!

Speight defender here. The offense looked totally different with O'Korn at the helm. Something is up with Speight, because its not the coaching or the receivers or the O-line, as O'Korn showed today. I see no reason O'Korn shouldn't get the start against sparty.

Was bad in the first half, but Speight still looks like he is playing NOT to make a mistake vs. trying to get the ball into the receivers hands.  I also think that the coaches finally spread the field some in the second half and the routes were much more focused on quicker shots.

Okorn was also hitting some tight windows and throwing the receivers into the routes which led to some nice YAC.

With this defense and play action scheme you need a qb who is mobile and can get that extra second to find the late crosser on a rhythm. JOK does an excellent job of this.

JOK was great. He hit different throws. Best part was with blitz in his face he stood tall and delivered. Very impressed. No happy feet. And he can scramble. We have an offense and my expectation has been restored.

My post about the TEs and RBS (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/tes-rbs-passing-game-film-session) showed that the extra blocker often caused confusion on the OL. This was the case again in the first half of this game, as the Speight sack that knocked him out had an OL with extra TE and Rb protection that was totally befudled. It happened again in the O'Korn drive that sputtered after the TD drive.

In the second half, we came out with 5 wide, and the OL held up there 1-on-1 block wonderfully without any extra blocking protection. This gave us quicker passes and more routes with potential to get open, and the extra time helped O'Korn improvise when players weren't originally open.

Kudos to the coaching staff for adjusting.

O'Korn looked great. Part of it may be his mobility. Pass protection has been atrocious and it seemed like he's got a greater ability to evade rushers and make plays. It's how Gardner was able to make some stuff work while he was here, and I think we saw some of that today.

The o-line seemed to shore it up late too, with some nice runs towards the end to seal the deal.

Hopefully Speight is OK. I can't believe how many dirty hits I saw. That was something I expected to see in a couple of weeks, not today.

O'Korn got a way better gameplan, adjusting to what Purdue was doing.  But he made some really good throws (the laser to McKeon in particular), did some nice work scrambling, and showed a lot of toughness.  Took advantage of that opportunity and earned the start in two weeks.

Okorn moved the offense. It was wonky at times but it moved enough. Plus his mobility bailed out a few plays. UM maybe loses or wins by a sliver with Speight.

Good throws and just enough my mobility to let plays develop. Second game ball goes to Gentry. Finally seeing his tremendous talent on display. Huge catch on 1st and 25 with the back shoulder adjustment. Big time. McKeon also showed up. Several solid catches. Really excited for him.

Overall, 423 yards of offense across 74 offensive snaps translates to 5.72 yards per play, which really isn't that bad, I think.

In the air, Speight and O'Korn went 21 for 31 for 284 yards, which comes out to 13.52 yards per completion and 9.16 yards per attempt.

On the ground, we didn't do too much - 139 yards across 44 carries for 3.16 yards per carry, which is not, well, great.

He can move around and find guys breaking open. He doesn't have a gun and he is not a speed demon but he has enough of both to be very effective.

I'm glad O'Korn stepped up in a tough situation. Hopefully this will be like Hunwick coming in for a hurt Hogan, with the rest of the team rallying to help him out (and coming out better for it).

But I think this game showed a lot of non-Speight issues in the offense, not all of which have been fixed.

1) finally we start hitting the tight ends! But where has this been the first three games? Is it sustainable?
2) the o-line and especially the RBs are still really struggling on blitz pickups. A lot of ole blocks that are going to get O'Korn killed too.
3) fumble-itis
4) run blocking still very hit or miss
5) TEs came up big today, but the WRs still are struggling to get open and are sometimes playing the ball poorly

Can someone tell me why our O Line is struggling so much?  Is it coaching?  Personnel?  Was Purdue's front that good?  Yes Isaac and Higdon each had a complete whiff on a block.  But in the first half, it seemed like their defensive line was so much better than our offensive line.  We have a chance to win the B1G because of our defense but we do not have a good offensive line.  And yes, Evans broke one run but Poggi could have ran through that hole.  That was probably the only hole the entire game.  Ugh.
