Nebraska fires AD

Submitted by ChalmersE on

Have to assume the new AD will fire the coach.  BTW, I understand a former Michigan AD might be looking for work soon.

a head coaching job especially at a P5 conference. He's in his second year as a position coach and is like 28 years old. He needs about 5 more years of position coaching experience and then about 5-6 years as a coordinator before he could hope for a HC job at maybe a MAC school and then hope to move up from there.

1. Craig Bohl, Wyoming HC

2. Scott Frost, UCF HC

3. Troy Calhoun, Air Force HC

4. Tim Beck, Texas OC

5. Bob Stitt, Montana HC (born in Tecumseh, NE)

I don't understand the Mike Riley hire at all.

His best season at Oregon State was 10-3 and a 1 pt win over an 8-4 Missouri Squad in Sun Bowl (El Paso, TX).

Ridiculous.

Personally I think Calhoun and Stitt are the best candidates.

When Jerry Pettibone of Oklahoma joined Tom Osborne's staff.

That year they started recruiting new dual-threat QBs like Turner Gill, Nate Mason, MacCathorn Clayton and Steve Taylor over subsequent seasons and they installed the Option and Power I sets.

Before Pettibone Nebraska was more of a pro-set team with QBs like Vince Ferragamo, Tom Sorley and Jeff Quinn.

But the reason Osborne won so many damn games in the Big 8 and the Big 12 was actually defense (the Blackshirts), especially rushing defense.

Historically Nebraska has always recruited well in distant states like Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Texas and California. The rest of their rosters were made up from a robust walk-on program.

But frankly, Nebraska doesn't belong in the Big Ten.  They're really don't. They murdered some of the best rivalries in college football (vs. Oklahoma, vs. Colorado, vs. Texas).

I hope they return to option football. Frost, Calhoun, Solich would ensure that would happen.

Deep down though I'd love to see Bob Stitt at Nebraska though.

for an AD to be fired for a coach hire before that coach has even been fired.

It will be a little odd if Riley still takes to his desk tomorrow because yeah well he's fired and everyone knows it even though his badge still works and all.

Regarding Nebraska..they will probably try to go after Nebraska people now - as that's what the people who wanted Eichorst fired were clamoring for in the first place - and I guess it will be a matter of their wisdom whether they end up with their Hoke/Brandon tandem or their Harbaugh/Hackett tandem.

That said, it's difficult to imagine Nebraska rising back to their 70s to 90s status again in the present environment - no matter who they hire. We sometimes are a bit jealous about how easy it is for Florida schools, but we're really quite well off in comparison to Nebraska as far as recruiting is concerned.

Left Pittsburgh, came to Nebraska and fired Solich after he had accumulated 58 wins in 6 seasons - more than his predecessors Osborne and Devaney had in a similar time span.

Pederson went back to Pitt until 2014 for the whole Wannstedt-Graham-Chryst debacle.

Frank Solich is now 73, so probably not the best choice for Nebraska longer term. But clearly a successful football coach who played at NU and coached some of the best running backs in college football history including I.M. Hipp, Jarvis Redwine, Roger Craig, Mike Rozier, Tom Rathman, Doug DuBose, etc., etc.

At Ohio he has done very well at HC since since 2005, winning or tying for 5 division titles. Bobcats are favorites to do well in the MAC this season (again)

How do Nebraska fans feel about returning to the triple option? It would give them a recruitng advantage in the sense that they will have no competition in the area for option players. It's fun to watch as a fan, and painful to watch as an opposing fan as we know. Georgia Tech has had more success with the triple option then they've had in a long time, and they are in a similar spot as Nebraska being in the weaker of the two divisions in their conference.

deal with it.

And stop firing perfectly good coaches for where you are.  Solich won 75% of his games at Nebraska, and Pelini won over 70%.  The number of schools with all time winning percentages over 70% is 8.  And Nebraska is just off that list.

Not that this would be all right for Michigan, but Nebraska needs to get real.  If they can't haul in top 10 classes on a regular basis, it's damn hard to be a consistently top ten program.  Wiscy, and for a while, Sparty, figured it out, but that also involved a hell of a lot of coaching/AD consistency.

This isn't 'Nam, this is Nebraska. There are rules here. Rule #1, be good at football. It's pretty simple, Chuck.

The water might be getting a little warm for a certain former coach in Arizona. I love see him lose more than beer and chocolate, and part of me would enjoy watching him scowl and lose on the visitor sideline at Michigan Stadium.

That said, I don't think Nebraska would pick up a coach who's been unsuccessful at his last two gigs.

It ain't 1992 anymore. I don't think Nebraska can reasonably expect to be a national title contender. Seems like a Pelini-type is about as good as you can do - a lot of 8-9 win seasons, a few 10-11 - and even then it seems likely that said coach will get poached because I imagine it's harder to recruit now what with them never playing in Texas anymore

even if I had to play @SMU or @Houston, I'd do it just so I could keep recruiting Texas kids and I could say "Hey son, we play a game in Texas every single year".

Nebraska is kind of lost in the Big Ten West playing in a bunch of cornfields against the rest of the lackluster west. A far cry from the days of seeing Texas, OU, and TAMU every year. I bet a lot of Nebraskans are deeply regretting their move to the B1G right now

Hoke got fired for much worse subsequent seasons than that 11 win one. Harbaugh's only got ten wins a season, and no one's saying he's on the hot seat or under pressure, for obvious reasons. Had Hoke kept winning 10-11 games a season, he'd still be Michigan's coach. Point is, 10 wins these days is not a bad season - there's far more parity than there used to be, except for very few programs, and the 9 win seasons under Pelini were actually not bad, as Nebraska later learned to its detriment. It's been 20 years since Michigan had a perfect season, and 13 years since our last B1G championship. We haven't ever gone to the B1G championship game, the BCS, or the 4 team playoff. It's been a long time since we beat OSU. We had a fairly long run of unacceptable seasons. Let's not be too smug about criticizing Nebraska.
