OT: What do you do for a living?

Submitted by NYC Fan on

With the offseason here, I thought it would be interesting to read what members on this board do for a living.  Student, Professional, Retiree, Entrepenuer...

Do you like what you do?  Wish you would have done things differently when you were a student searching for a career choice?

EE (Michigan, of course)/MBA. Been doing this for about 30 years at startups and BigCos. Hate working at BigCos but have been doing so because, well, they pay me a lot and I needed it for my kids’ pricey educations. Now that they’ve graduated, I want to go back to a startup. Soon….

sell shopping centers in San Diego and CA...love it. Your income is solely based on you, plus the competition is like playing sports.  Dream job: being a LL and collecting passive income.

Help convert heathens to Christianity. Baptize them. Preach the Gospel. Teach the truth. Marry the unmarried. Administer the sacraments. Console the brokenhearted. Counsel the confused. Visit the sick. Visit the prisoner. Feed the poor and hungry. Provide for an AIDS community in Kenya. Bury the dead. Pray.

I don't force anyone to do anything. I don't make lots of money. I don't endorse for or against any political candidates or elected politicians. (never have, and never will.)

Needless to say, what I do for a living touches directly on a verboten third rail here at MGoBlog. I know that my profession, my very existence, rankles and offends some at this blog. Which is ok. I try to avoid giving offense. Sometimes that works. Sometimes, not.

I too am a Pastor, only I'm a Children's Pastor. Best job in the world, although to tell the truth I spend most of my time doing church admin work rather than kidmin. Did my time in the corporate world before my life was changed and after that the need burned in me to serve. Kids really broke my heart and once I worked with them I never looked back.

I have a friend, woman in her late 40's, who was in client service (advertising) for a long time. She really wanted to be a journalist, so she contacted our town's newspaper with an idea for a weekly column. While doing that, she also started writing a news-oriented blog. That was several years ago. She's now a writer for that paper, and pursues stories that interest her. It's never too late.

My frustrating job:  Attorney.

My dream job: radio or telecommunications - ideally as a sportscaster.  The communications department was less than stellar while I was on campus, and I was persuaded to apply to Business School, on the (accurate) basis that it was one of the best in the country.  Two years later, I had a BBA but no significant job offers.  It was (strongly) suggested to me that I would ultimately benefit from having a graduate degree, so it was off to law school for three years and now over thirty years in practice, in a profession that I don't enjoy.
My advice to my younger self would have been to transfer after my sophomore year to a school with a strong communications program (USC, Syracuse, etc.) and do what I enjoyed!

Of course, had I not stayed in Ann Arbor, I would likely have never ended up with my fun job: member of the stat crew for football and men's basketball.  Best. Job. Ever.

President/CEO of a small, not for profit financial services organization in Washtenaw County.  Small, not for profit financial services organization could also be read as "Credit Union" but for some reason many people don't realize that!

Lost my job in a major IT merger about a year ago. It was not a surprise and i got decent severnce package. Decided to take the summer off need think about my next steps. Family health issues extended the summer well into fall and I decided I liked doing whatever I want to do each day. Doing some volunteering and a few projects and happy to slow down and smell the roses.

After completing my JD at UM I went into consulting and the corporate world. Now I work in the Career Management Center at a top-tier MBA program advising aspiring consultants. The students can be demanding, the pay's a lot less than in the for-profit world, but the satisfaction of helping an individual get a great job is hard to beat, and I get home every night in time to walk the dogs.

Or as my clients refer to me, their "patent lawyer" in the computer and electrical space. I'm also an active member of the recording academy and writers guild with some of my contributions actually producing revenue. And so there is that.

That means I work with the HR function at companies to set strategy, operating model, service delivery model, (re)design processes, help make technology decisions, and general broad HR transformation.

It does not include flying around like George Clooney and firing people. We also don't do massive business reorgs - we leave that to the likes of McK, BCG, etc.

Eventually, every single Michigan grad practices law or at least attends law school. I noticed that phenomenon a decade ago. There must be something in the A^2 water supply, no?

Hate my job but at least I have one. Lots of people struggling out there. Have tried to leave a number of times but always ended up staying. In the end the only good thing has been that most of the companies I may have left for have gone out of business.

I'm C-Level of a small Media Buying service.  (We don't create the ads, we plan where they're placed, negotiate pricing with media vendors, etc.)  I lead all of the non-client-facing stuff -- Operations, Accounting, HR, etc.

Orthodontist. Would do it a thousand times over. But after UM undergrad, I would change my other schools and go someplace cheaper cause I haven't even made a dent in loans.

BTW this has been a really cool thread to read. First one in a long time I've read start to finish. Cool stuff by the mgocommunity.

Pediatric oncologist/research.  Some days it's the best job in the world. It never gets old telling a patient and their parents, "we don't see any signs of cancer".  People are usually pretty stoked about that.  Conversely, the sucky days are pretty sucky. Thankfully those are less frequent (though not nearly infrequent enough).
