One successful thing I've seen is having a discord or slack channel or something where paid subscribers can interact with people from the organization on a weekly basis (a podcast I listen to does this). They also have a tier where you get to be a guest podcaster with them for an episode. I think both of those would be well received by potential MGoPatrons. Whether or not Brian could actually tolerate an in-person interaction with some of the... personalities... on here might be another story.

I'm glad to see someone else saying this and I'm honestly surprised there's not a horde of MGoSycophants attacking you. I honestly thought this entire thing was exceptionally childish. Even is Ed is wrong, it's still completely inappropriate to treat someone the way Brian did on the air and makes Brian look worse for it.
I love this blog and have been coming here for years before I created my account but it's getting harder to listen to someone who has to constantly remind people that he's the smartest person in the room.

They mentioned voting "next week" several times during the podcast so I'm thinking this was probably recorded during the week and there will be a regularly scheduled football podcast to come.
I'm really tired of turning on my TV and getting blasted by politics so I was a little bit disappointed about this but, on the other side of the coin, my buddy and I were just talking about how we knew next to nothing about the regents race so I guess be careful what you ask for, haha.

Yeah, that's where I'm at. Watched Bredeson block air a few times, leaving Runyan with a 1v2. Several stunts were still a mess. Interior D-Line was still unimpressive. I didn't see enough to make me feel good against the top of the Big Ten East.
It was still good to see the team do what they were supposed to do.

Exactly. My first thought at halftime was "cool, it's 2017 again." It really sucks to know I'm going to have to sit through and watch basically a repeat of last season but thank god I don't have to write about it to make ends meat. I'm sure he's at least considered a copy-paste from an article from last year once or twice in the last 48 hours.
Sure, you can argue that this is what he chose and you take the bad with the good but I think we can all forgive a some cynicism. I'd be more worried if he came out telling us it was all going to be okay.

That's not manslaughter; it's not the law to be able to recognize and treat the symptoms of heat stroke. Is it part of his or his staff's job? I should hope so and, if it's not, it damn-well better be soon and not just at Maryland but everywhere. Not to under-sell the situation but this should absolutely be a wake-up call to programs around the country and an opportunity to learn from this.
This isn't me defending Durkin, I just think you're reaching a little bit there.

I mean, I get what you're saying: let's treat them with human decency, and I agree with that but also the sole reason they exist in the capacity that they do is for "our" entertainment. I think it's dangerous when we start holding athletes in spectator sports under a different light than an actor/acress, musician, etc.
Doesn't mean we don't treat them with humanity (which is easy to lose under the guise of anonymity) but also let's stop pretending the their opinions [on any topic] are more or less valid than the next person purely because they have a platform.

|01/02/2018 - 1:44pm||It would be incredibly stupid||
It would be incredibly stupid for an ISP to put ESPN in the slow lane. They would be competing with themselves. In order to stream ESPN you must be subscribed through a TV provider. 90% of the time that is also your ISP. Slowing down an ESPN stream would be the equivelent of having a free HBO/Cinemax promotional weekend but only in 360p resolution. You want people to buy that, shitty performance isn't the way to sell.
It's far more likely that the ESPN streaming service couldn't handle all of the demand.

|11/28/2017 - 12:52pm||Control? No. Affect?||
Control? No. Affect? Certainly. That's the whole point of coaches "working" the officials during the game. That's why make-up calls exist. I used to officiate soccer games and I've had my fair share of make-up calls. I've also had my fair share of "fuck you" calls. Right, wrong, or indifferent: referrees can be affected.
But even beyond that, a compelling case can be made to the league and, with the right about of tact and leverage, can potentially change how these games are officiated. Saying we can't do anything about it shows a lack of creative problem-solving and a defeatist attitude.
|11/28/2017 - 11:17am||Yeah, my response is always||
Yeah, my response is always "can't it be both?" Why can't we hope the players make plays and demand fair and equitable treatment from the officials?
Anybody who has played competetive sports for any amount of time knows how difficult it is to win an evenly-matched game in spite of the officiating. "Just win" is the mantra of someone who knows little about competition and wants to feel better about themselves for painting others as excuse-makers and whiners.
And I totally get that there's a ton of people that sit and watch these games that see their receiver getting held on every play but don't see their defender doing the same thing. That's not what we're talking about here. *Puts on foil cap* this seems to go deeper than that. It's tough not to believe in conspiracies when statistics back up what you had previously just guessed at (see: every thread talking about Harbaugh dialing back the tantrums).

Yeah, logged in just to upvote this. I think people spend too much time watching sports center and not watching other teams' games. The last 2 years our QB play has been pretty good comparitively. We don't have Deshaun Watson or Lamar Jackson but Wilton Speight came in the top 25 of most metrics last year. People keep expecting a Heisman candidate and video game numbers. We had video game numbers in 2010 at the QB position. Doesn't necessarily win you a championship.
|09/12/2017 - 9:32am||I come here because I enjoy||
I come here because I enjoy Brian's style of writing and the level of analysis here, compared to anywhere else I've gone, is of much higher quality. I would argue that this can't be done by just anyone, otherwise there would be millions of such sites that share the success this one has had over the years.
I think you're fair when you say he's not expert; I guess that's why I'm speaking out this way. I see stuff like Brian's twitter war with that high school coach and I just cringe because I base part of my identity on my fandom and a piece of that relates directly to this site. I helped Brian with the Dave Brandon emails, I've donated time and money to the site, I have skin in the game. When I see that level of arrogance and disregard for dissonance I'm a bit embarassed.
That said, I'm certainly not up in arms. It's not like I'm calling for a revolution or anything. I just wanted to vent to the board and hope maybe Brian, Seth, or Ace might see it and take a moment to be introspective.
|09/11/2017 - 2:31pm||So I'm really only commenting||
So I'm really only commenting about this because it's something that annoys me and shows a bit of a lack of self-awareness from our fearless leader. Before I go on, I'm going to caveat this by saying I am not in the torch and pitchforks camp in regards to Speight.
There's something that a lot of scientists and science communicators are talking about right now called the backfire effect. Simply put, it's a phenominon that occurs when you challenge someone's closely held beliefs; even with facts. Instead of accepting new facts and adjusting their world-view accordingly, most people will double-down on what they previously held to be true (for many reasons such as sense of identity and others).
Since before week one, Brian has gone on the air several times and written several times more that anyone who asserts that Speight is not the starter or best option at starter or "just fine" is an idiot. [Note, this is my paraphrase based on implications, tenor, tone etc. when discussing the topic Not a direct quote]. Regardless if that's true or not, those that saw the last 4 games of the 2016 season and the spring game that had decided that that was not the case are more-likely to double-down on that belief because it has been challenged, and quite aggressively in my opinion.
That's why every time Speight wings a ball to Tacopants twitter explodes with "SEE!!! SEEE!!!!" It's people seeking out their confirmation bias to prove the expert wrong. It's armchair QB-ing but with "hot takes" at a blogger. Bitching about your mentions every chance you get, be it on air or on the site, isn't going to make them go away, it's only going to make it worse. I'm not saying don't call a spade a spade, I'm just saying that doing in such an aggressive manner isn't going to get the results you want to see.
