OT: What do you do for a living?

Submitted by NYC Fan on

With the offseason here, I thought it would be interesting to read what members on this board do for a living.  Student, Professional, Retiree, Entrepenuer...

Do you like what you do?  Wish you would have done things differently when you were a student searching for a career choice?

Yea, those days are straight brutal. I meet people for the first time knowing with absolute certainty they're about to have the worst day of their lives. That part is hard, but nooooothing compared to the conversation that we don't have anything left to offer. The only thing that helps is knowing that those kids are getting sick from cancer no matter if I was a fisherman, nude model, or any other profession. Even though it blows, I try my best to make sure things go as best as they can (and despite the outcome, there's important value to that).

I had volunteered for years when younger in youth football, which led to a job as head coach at the middle school level. However, for the final 13 of those 53 years I went into the restroom five minutes before leaving for the day, changed from a suit or jacket and tie into jeans, t-shirt and whistle and headed straight to the football field, roughly 40 miles away to meet my team. I was the first non-school employee to become the varsity football coach at a small school in w.. MI. Obviously, I had never slept better in my life than during that period.

Thinking about that I have nothing but admiration for coaches who are able to spend the entire day in school teaching, then head to the field to coach the kids they had spent the whole day with. Since the playoffs were introducted drastic changes in regard to coaching have taken place. I recall Reeths-Puffer hiring Pete Kutches from Catholic, gave him ten years toward his retirement and called him a Phys. Ed teacher but he was a "Football Coach," pure and simple. For those public school  teachers who are able to pull this off and still field competitive football teams on a regular basis, I salute you.

Teacher and coach. Although the last one is fading away lately as my kids take up more and more of my time. Teaching is the best; I love it.

Run the sortation center in SE Michigan as part of the Amazon Fulfillment engine. Graduated from M mega Avila engineering and worked in the start up medical device field (defibrillators) in Southern California for 10 years before moving back to Michigan. Amazon can be tough, but I love the operations environment more than the hardcore England meeting environment with heavy regulations.

a homeschooling mom. It's not at all what I thought I'd be doing when I graduated 20 years ago, but I love it. What would make it better? More world traveling!
