JUB seems to think O'Korn is the QB

Submitted by Michael on

During his interview on WTKA this morning, John U Bacon seemed to imply that John O'Korn is the starting QB. At least that's what it sounded like to me, when he says "You have to see what O'Korn does in this system" in evaluating the prospects for making the playoffs.

Listen from the 28:00 minute mark.

EDIT: To clarify, I think this is significant for two reasons: 1) JUB offered this as fact and not merely his opinion, and 2) JUB has very good access, so it's possibly he's unintentionally leaking information nobody else has.

Of course, I don't subscribe to any of the paid services so I really don't know what's being talked about there.

My guess is that the coaches know, and probably the team, but we won't see it for sure until Saturday morning.  And honestly, against Hawaii, might as well let both guys get some playing time and see how it looks.  It's not like that's a game in doubt.

Right, and also because if Speight wins, that probably means that none of the O'Korn "upside," or at least super-upside was achieved at camp.  Or that O'Korn showed upside but didn't show equal team leadership.  Either way, and with the strong disclaimer that I like Speight and root hard for the kid, an O'Korn victory here somehow seems to suggest things are in really good shape with that position while a Speight victory leaves a slight question mark.

It's Speight. He's had three great practices in a row, and the offense is better with him out there. By far.

Seems like will be Speight because O'Korn isn't trusted enough to take care of the ball but I would expect the offense to start the season slowly again.

jog onto the field for the first play.  Speight under center and O'Korn lines up wide left and we run a reverse pass wiht O'Korn throwing to Chesson steaking down the field.  Crowd goes nuts.  Second series ... it's The JOK Show.

From what I've been reading in various places Speight had a lot of the buzz last week. This week it seemed that JOK has the momentum in terms of people saying he has the upper hand. We will see.

we will be in good hands.

Speight's upside is as high as JOK. He is taller and stronger, which matters more in a pro-style offense than quick feet. I would argue that having mobility in some cases migh hurt the development of young QBs, as they tend to bail out with their feet too early.

Last year they said the same things to the media - that it was still undecided and we would find out at kickoff but it was painfully obvious based on Shane's body language and the look on his face that he wasn't the starter.  I'm sure they know or will know before they start prepping for Hawaii this week.

I am somewhat pulling for O'Korn, if I am being honest.  He has 1 full season (as a freshman) of starting experience under his belt, as well as a lot of snaps during his second season.  He also has the reputedly stronger arm, better legs and greater upside.  To make the playoffs, you really need to have great QB play.  Given O'Korn's freshman year, the potential is there.

I am not slighting Speight, but I am not sure whether he has as much potential.  My view is that has the potential to turn into a solidly-average, workman-like QB, but will that be enough (especially in 2017, when we lose so much talent)?

Just my admittedly uninformed view.

I like both players, I think OKorns starting experience, and legs, give his game an added dimension. Honestly I think we'd be fine if Peppers started at qb.

I just watched Speight's senior hudl tape. He is pretty accurate, gets the ball out on time and moves well enough to avoid pressure, buy time, and open new throwing lanes.. even if he doesn't look super smooth doing it. He is tall and sorta gawky - but very functional. I'm okay with him as the starter if he wins it.

If you consistently and accurately deliver the ball out to your fleet of great skill players you don't need to make huge plays with your feet. The best example of this type of QB is Tom Brady.

Of course Bacon thinks Korn is the QB. The similarities in their names are frightening. They both follow this formula: John Vowel Food.

is that John Candy and Jon Hamm both think it's John O'Korn's job to lose. That's a veritable Mount Rushmore of John Food's right there - Bacon, Candy, Hamm, and O'Korn.

(For the purposes of this joke neglect the fact that John Candy is dead.)

Actually it's my preference based on tape of the two. I think JH can game plan to utilize JOK's downfield passing and the offense is looking for explosiveness. Jehu can stretch the field, TEs can run the seams, Darboh can run intermediate routes - then just add check downs to the RBs or Hill. Even McDoom will help downfield and there are so many ways to get Evans/JP the ball in space with easy read routes. Net, JH can devise high reward downfield or low risk underneath which should fit JOK's skill set. Perhaps Speight has developed significantly and JH doesn't see a limitation on game planning like I suggested for JOK. The 1st game or two should be fascinating.

Rumor has it that it's True Freshman walkon Denardo Robbins from Florida.

Supposedly he's related to a former UM Quarterback but they won't say which one.

Ignore the Adidas logo's picture is from Spring Camp.
