JUB seems to think O'Korn is the QB
During his interview on WTKA this morning, John U Bacon seemed to imply that John O'Korn is the starting QB. At least that's what it sounded like to me, when he says "You have to see what O'Korn does in this system" in evaluating the prospects for making the playoffs.
Listen from the 28:00 minute mark.

EDIT: To clarify, I think this is significant for two reasons: 1) JUB offered this as fact and not merely his opinion, and 2) JUB has very good access, so it's possibly he's unintentionally leaking information nobody else has.
Of course, I don't subscribe to any of the paid services so I really don't know what's being talked about there.

Looks like a big brother/little brother picture
August 26th, 2016 at 3:11 PM ^
He's probably like 6-3, but in fairness he's bending to the side in that picture and Speight is standing straight up.

And standing on Gentry's head

He's not bending that much though...

That's one short guy that made it - the success rate of < 6'0 QB's is pretty low. But to your point height is irrelevant here since Speight is giant and O'Korn is 6'3 or so I believe.

My guess is that the coaches know, and probably the team, but we won't see it for sure until Saturday morning. And honestly, against Hawaii, might as well let both guys get some playing time and see how it looks. It's not like that's a game in doubt.
August 26th, 2016 at 5:34 PM ^
I hope they are both good enough to be neck and neck in this competition. At some point this year, one may go down and the other will have to step in and keep things rolling. It is hard for a starting QB to make it thru the season without missing time.

I live for the day when our OL will no longer be described as "questionable."
August 26th, 2016 at 4:22 PM ^
But remember when "questionable" was being generous? At least we're beyond that.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:28 PM ^
Tbh, I think the upside argument to start O'Korn is overrated. Speight has a ton of upside just because of how tall he is and how he can potentially be able to see down the field easier than JOK.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:37 PM ^
I think the "he can see down the field easier" argument is overrated. JOK isn't 5'9. He can see.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:52 PM ^
gentry is 6'7" right? he must have the most upside then

ladderally
August 26th, 2016 at 5:59 PM ^
Right, and also because if Speight wins, that probably means that none of the O'Korn "upside," or at least super-upside was achieved at camp. Or that O'Korn showed upside but didn't show equal team leadership. Either way, and with the strong disclaimer that I like Speight and root hard for the kid, an O'Korn victory here somehow seems to suggest things are in really good shape with that position while a Speight victory leaves a slight question mark.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:27 PM ^
Sometimes I feel like I'd rather it be O'Korn simply because he was never tainted by Brady Hoke, but Harbaugh and all that.
August 26th, 2016 at 4:04 PM ^
you said taint

Did you get to see some of the fall practices?
FYI: The coaches keep track of many stats. After Spring practices, Speight was leading O'Korn in all the major catgeories.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:28 PM ^
Seems like will be Speight because O'Korn isn't trusted enough to take care of the ball but I would expect the offense to start the season slowly again.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:29 PM ^
jog onto the field for the first play. Speight under center and O'Korn lines up wide left and we run a reverse pass wiht O'Korn throwing to Chesson steaking down the field. Crowd goes nuts. Second series ... it's The JOK Show.

Just have Peppers line up in the Wildcat as QB the first 3 games and blow everybody's mind.
Of course, knowing Peppers, he may never give up the job.

we will be in good hands.
Speight's upside is as high as JOK. He is taller and stronger, which matters more in a pro-style offense than quick feet. I would argue that having mobility in some cases migh hurt the development of young QBs, as they tend to bail out with their feet too early.
August 26th, 2016 at 3:51 PM ^
Andrew Luck had great escapability, Rudock made some huge plays with his legs last year. O'Korn excites me more, higher ceiling. If Speight outplays him then I'm great with that.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:48 PM ^
Last year they said the same things to the media - that it was still undecided and we would find out at kickoff but it was painfully obvious based on Shane's body language and the look on his face that he wasn't the starter. I'm sure they know or will know before they start prepping for Hawaii this week.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:55 PM ^
I am somewhat pulling for O'Korn, if I am being honest. He has 1 full season (as a freshman) of starting experience under his belt, as well as a lot of snaps during his second season. He also has the reputedly stronger arm, better legs and greater upside. To make the playoffs, you really need to have great QB play. Given O'Korn's freshman year, the potential is there.
I am not slighting Speight, but I am not sure whether he has as much potential. My view is that has the potential to turn into a solidly-average, workman-like QB, but will that be enough (especially in 2017, when we lose so much talent)?
Just my admittedly uninformed view.
August 26th, 2016 at 2:58 PM ^
I like both players, I think OKorns starting experience, and legs, give his game an added dimension. Honestly I think we'd be fine if Peppers started at qb.

If you consistently and accurately deliver the ball out to your fleet of great skill players you don't need to make huge plays with your feet. The best example of this type of QB is Tom Brady.
August 26th, 2016 at 3:20 PM ^
Need to keep that ferocious Hawaii team guessing. (?)
August 26th, 2016 at 3:20 PM ^
Of course Bacon thinks Korn is the QB. The similarities in their names are frightening. They both follow this formula: John Vowel Food.
August 26th, 2016 at 3:59 PM ^
is that John Candy and Jon Hamm both think it's John O'Korn's job to lose. That's a veritable Mount Rushmore of John Food's right there - Bacon, Candy, Hamm, and O'Korn.
(For the purposes of this joke neglect the fact that John Candy is dead.)

Rumor has it that it's True Freshman walkon Denardo Robbins from Florida.
Supposedly he's related to a former UM Quarterback but they won't say which one.
Ignore the Adidas logo's picture is from Spring Camp.

Hopefully he can throw the ball better than that RB in Jacksonville.
