This actually sounds pretty fun,  I might make the trip if work allows.

07/02/2018 - 11:05pm Figured I'd beef this up…

Figured I'd beef this up with specific pros and cons of Lansing/the burbs

Pros

- Cheap COL. By cheap I mean extremely cheap and pretty good housing stock.

- Great public school systems (however doesn't matter w/ no kids)

- Nice to have an airport for a city so small

- Stable economy: MSU, State Gov, Insurance Co's, GM....nothing seems to be all down at once which insulates the area from Detroit-like boom and busts.

Cons

-Nightlife - either college bar, old people bar, or kind've a rougher crowd. Not much of an in-between.

- Sparty - 99% of MSU grads are awesome people. But being a younger guy you always get shit from the hardcore Spartans who are equivalent to our worst fans, and average O$U fans.

- Roads - they suck

- City income tax - I would strongly suggest not living in Lansing (current income tax) or EL (impending income tax). Also if you work in Lansing (which I don't) you are also subject to it.

- Politics - even local politics gets amplified here by people in the political "know." Similar to living in DC where some people take their lobbying jobs/legislative director jobs too seriously (to the point of trying to look totally awesome to people).

I spent a year in Columbus and will have to say having never been there it is a pretty kickass City if you enjoy midwestern towns. Loved that traffic was always smooth....

07/02/2018 - 10:44pm Same here... Surprising…

Same here... Surprising amount of not only UM grads here, but also UM fans. It seems like every automotive worker + family is a UM fan and Sparty only really dominates EL and Okemos/Haslett.

Generally, I like how close Lansing is to GR, up North, and Detroit. A little small though when there's no like trader joes etc... Airport has some nice flights direct to MSP if you want to go out west or else DTW is 1 hr away. Basically everything in MI is 1hr away from Lansing.

06/30/2018 - 11:19am Oakland, Toledo, Depaul, and…

Oakland, Toledo, Depaul, and Kent are pretty decent if he had multiple D1 offers.... I mean he's not a blue chip, but it's not some guy with one D1 offer.

06/26/2018 - 2:07pm Not totally sure if I…

Not totally sure if I believe this, but I'll bite. I doubt they do this because South Bend has been making lists of "top 50 most dangerous cities in the US" recently and their mayor has been mad as hell because crime reporting stats are not uniform. - Source: Went to ND for grad school/reading the SB tribune often.

06/15/2018 - 3:45pm FWIW I like Youtube TV, but…

FWIW I like Youtube TV, but some of my friends said all the movement was weird when we watched a Michigan bball game.

06/13/2018 - 9:06pm I went to a school of about…

I went to a school of about 1000 in SW Michigan. Graduated in 2011. My class had IIRC 6 got to UM. Mlive posted an article about where hs students are going to college in MI. I think my school's 2017 grad class had 1-2 go to UM. Really shocking how much harder it is these days.

06/06/2018 - 1:51pm Most if not all the TVs are…

Most if not all the TVs are manufactured by the same people/companies regardless and have similar hardware unless you’re buying a super high end television.

06/06/2018 - 1:49pm FWIW if you have the right…

FWIW if you have the right Netflix you can stream 4K and HDR content

06/06/2018 - 11:18am Because they’re relatively…

Because they’re relatively inexpensive all TVs will generally be 4K. The biggest thing now to watch out for now is not resolution but refresh/motion rate especially if you like sports (I’m not a huge tech guy so this terminology may be wrong). I’d recommend at least 120Hz if you can afford it. I use my 4K TV to play games, and watch Netflix in 4K and it’s great.

For brands, I have an LG that works great with HDR. Vizio (although cheaper) seems to be a good TV and I have one that’s about 5-6 years old going strong, but relegated to the bedroom.

If you are somewhat tech inclined - go to Newegg and buy a refurbished TV, you’ll save a ton of money. I’ve bought two and have had no issues with either. Some say to only buy refurbished that are offered with a warranty (and don’t buy the warranty) but YMMV. I also bought an open box sound bar and that works great and I saved probably $350 by doing so.

05/29/2018 - 11:32am I went to ND and Michigan and

I went to ND and Michigan and received an email about buying UM tix in South Bend, not saying that could change....

05/15/2018 - 5:42pm Yep Ford is "reliable" now,

Yep Ford is "reliable" now, but just now doesn't give a shit about their customers. Bought 2011 Fusion Hybrid (fully loaded brand new). Found out over a year ago (from Ford) and going on two that no one should use the front passenger seat due to Takata airbag. Ford I guess is in a dispute with the Feds about the recall and therefore has no parts to replace the airbag (AFTER OVER A YEAR GOING ON TWO). Oh and no dealer wants it because of no part/can't sit in front.

Will never buy a Ford again (after buying three brand new in the last 15 years).

05/15/2018 - 5:39pm My CRV has been great no

My CRV has been great no problems at 112k miles. However, the AC just blew out and everything online says it is most likely the compressor (very common issue) and will be a 1-2k job. Not sure what I'm going to do now since it's a 9k car. Might need to get a new car tbh if the dealer will give me a decent deal.

05/14/2018 - 11:17am FWIW that could have been the

FWIW that could have been the vision for UM in its inception, but just from my own families anecdotal evidence, you'd be hard--pressed to find any 'common men' attending UM from its inception to maybe the 1950s onward (post GI bill).

05/10/2018 - 5:33pm Lived in Columbus for a a

Lived in Columbus for a a little over a year, but S/O was still up in MI so on the weekends I'd go up a lot. Once you get N of Findlay you start start seeing UM fans...

Also ironically High St (Columbus/OSU version of state street) runs/turns/ into/is US 23 - The hwy from Ann Arbor to Columbus (well besides when it turns into 75 etc...)

05/10/2018 - 5:25pm You drive around in areas

You drive around in areas with bad neighborhoods for a good laugh? Wtf??

05/10/2018 - 4:15am Yep I played for lakeshore

Yep I played for lakeshore back in the day. BH has a cool one side set up. The one thing though is because you were so low and close to the river the field is full of mosquitos. Locker rooms are a country mile from the stadium similar to Niles

BCC has a pretty impressive stadium too. Also as the visiting team you have to walk under it in a tunnel to get to the lockeroom right past the opposing fans. That was fun!

05/06/2018 - 2:04pm We're getting a lot of

We're getting a lot of players from the NE. I wonder if we'll soon have about 1/3 of the team (including Don Brown) with some variant of a NE accent. Would be cool.

05/05/2018 - 8:24pm I didn't experience hazing

I didn't experience hazing like that at all and would say it's very uncommon. I went to a pretty large school, but in a small town. The older kids would ride on you when you're younger (esp. because we shared a lockerroom) but nothing like that.

Closest thing to hazing I saw was basically older guys who thought it'd be funny while they're heading to showers to stand close to freshman etc...

05/05/2018 - 12:10am Yes. Your son will most

Yes. Your son will most likely just get a fake ID (like every one of my peers who went to college in Chi) or go to bars where they don't check and go wild. It's college sadly.

05/04/2018 - 6:17pm I never understood U-M on

I never understood U-M on this one. I almost didn't go to UM back in the day when pre-admits to Ross were impossible and they only took like 40% of people who applied to the school. I was set to be an accounting major at another Big10 university, but (1) got a gf who I'm now engaged to in MI; and (2) did not want my parents spending OOS tuition on me because I got directly into their B-School.

What it did was force many Ross "rejects" into Econ (what I minored in) which prepares you IN NO WAY (well maybe a little) for a career in Business.

05/04/2018 - 6:12pm I'm sorry to interject, but I

I'm sorry to interject, but I disagree strongly. If you go to RCMB they use this same argument about UM grads.

Company I used to work for recruited UChi students a lot and MANY were personable. One in particular (in Supply Chain) was probably the best young person in the office. I know many Uchi grads (from undergrad) in law school and a majority are extremely likable and personable.

I'd leave this decision to your kid if money is not too much of an issue (e.g. out of state). If your kid is not a Ross pre-admit UChi may be more attractive because Ross is pretty hard to get into. Uchi is objectively a great school in a great city. I know some of my friends liked the real college campus feel (me included). Some others liked going to school in a major metro (Chicago) and going out to bars, pro sport games, having a diverse dating scene etc...

If your kid wants to be an investment banker or work at Goldman than UChi might be a better choice. However, UM Ross is huge in getting students to consulting gigs.

FWIW I'm a Michigan grad.

05/04/2018 - 4:08pm Classic case of how a

Classic case of how a business operates and spends VS the scrutiny any government/public agency has.

It looks like UM is working this out internally..

Took non-profit law. Lots of universities have this issue. Because UM is public there's extra scrutiny. Because the endowment is private funds there's going to be tension. Don't forget the endowment funds typically have strings attached to them etc...

I also read the article and thought it was fairly interesting, but not a huge deal. Then I lost all respect for the journalist who went on twitter and tweeted "I thought you'd be interested in this" to like a 1000 entites/people that deal with auditing procedures.

05/03/2018 - 3:30pm I've read the news articles

I've read the news articles saying Harvard and Umich Drs have cleared Mo, but I don't think we'll ever know the extent of him being "cleared" is (unless I haven't read the right articles). "Cleared" is not an end-all term.

Like is Mo totally OK to play football w/o any health issues? Or did the Drs say he can play football but there's a substantial risk (more so than not playing) for something wrong to happen and he has to monitor himself? Or did the Drs say you are going to have some cardiac event in life and playing football will probably not effect that chance?

I simply don't know the facts and I can see where a Scout is coming from if an NFL doctor says "I don't think X should play football". Drs will disagree.... BUT, Mo is obviously a very mature and educated man and his decision regarding playing in the NFL is IMO his decision.

05/02/2018 - 5:43pm I think this years whole 1st

I think this years whole 1st round QBs are overrated. Rosen, Allen, Darnold.... They are nowhere near on par with like Peyton Manning in college (who of course was a HUGE talent), but team are investing everything into them.

05/02/2018 - 2:50pm Yes and IIRC montone voice is

Yes and IIRC monotone voice is a symptom of parkinon's. I like his analysis and him in the booth tbh. I could care less for a loud mouth on there etc...

05/01/2018 - 2:53pm I liked Blue Lep in

I liked Blue Lep in undergrad. Perfect for me as it wasn't a total shitshow like Ricks, but still a fun time time (and IMO more fun than Charley's).

I'd also go to the short-lived World of Beer and order the most obscure things they had in bottles on the menu. I remember getting some bottle of Lithuanian beer that opened like a bottle of champagne which the waitress had to look like 20 mins for.

05/01/2018 - 1:33pm Yeah my first road MSU game I

Yeah my first road MSU game I went to was probably my worst fan experience of my life. I grew up in Green Bay and used to go to road games in GB gear, but damn the MSU fans were bad. I think it also it much worse when you're 18-23. Even with a bunch of grown MSU alumni people still constantly fucked with me. At one point I'm standing by the stadium gate minding my own business when some really small MSU undergrad said something to my gf. I said something back and just laughed and he came up trying to literally fight me in front of the ushers.

The worst I did to visiting MSU fans in 2013 was literally make fun of Leveon Bell for being a heisman contender or saying MSU sucks. Not following them around and trying to fight them. I was standing right next to an MSU student in the student section and had a pretty good back and forth with him in a joking way.

Now I'm at grad school at ND and went to the MSU game on the road (where MSU got curb-stomped btw) and literally no one bothered me there.

04/30/2018 - 3:26pm Great size and looks like a

Great size and looks like a good kid (and from MI). Congrats!

04/29/2018 - 11:27pm im he played good relative to

i meant he played good relative to what he showed his qb skills to be. iirc like the first 2-3Q he didn't turn the ball over/kept UM in the game for the most part. my recollection of last season is hazy.

04/29/2018 - 10:29pm His chances of making an NFL

His chances of making an NFL roster or honestly even practice squad have to be like 4 million to one. I also didn't particularly care for him during the Amazon series.

BUT, I think it is beyond childish to put stupid responses to his tweet etc... critisizing him etc... I'm sure he gave UM everything he had and he did it with class. Good luck to him, maybe he wants to get into coaching or something and this would be a great experience for him.

His play during the Purdue game was great (and saved us from a potential L) and he played about 7/8 of the OSU game pretty good as well (if it weren't for some of the bad throws at the end). In particular. I recall seeing him pushing one of our backs into the endzone showing some grit.

04/26/2018 - 9:58am Wimbush is a wild card (esp.

Wimbush is a wild card (esp. at home). I know a lot of people are writing him off as he sucked down the stretch (and esp the Miami game that was hyped up), but the dude did carve up MSU and had some good games.

The highlights make it look like ND's oline is terrible. I hope this is the case.

04/25/2018 - 4:51pm honestly the o-line even in

honestly the o-line even in the second year of hoke was much better than the one we had this past year

04/24/2018 - 2:24am Yeah if I'm UDM I jump up and

Yeah if I'm UDM I jump up and down to get Pitino. The guy will be on his best behavior there and probably get some pretty damn good recruits.

It would look super hypocritical though to fire Bacari for saying smd, among other things such as losing a lot of games, and hire Pitino given his whole situation.

04/22/2018 - 8:33pm I hope you're right, but with

I hope you're right, but with all respect I think people in general need to stop internally comparing or believing Dylan is the same caliber athlete as Christian.

Dylan is still very young 19 and he's built like it. He needs to bulk up quite a bit IMO. I think Brandon would win the job if Shea's out.

04/21/2018 - 4:04am Have some knowledge/xp in the

Have some knowledge/xp in the legal tech space. It's hard to predict what AI will do for the legal industry.

On one hand, AI/machine learning may lead to lawyers being able to more due diligence for deals etc... because they can review documents much faster.

On the other, stuff like basic wills etc... will get farmed out to services like LegalZoom. The catch is there is a huge market of people who should/might want to consider legal services who simply don't. E.g. the guy making a lower class income may never approach an attorney about estate planning, BUT he may use LegalZoom. Same goes for a small start-up for IP regarding trademarking their IP.

A lot of law is not simply just rules (but it can be). A decision-tree or expert system type tech won't be able to compute things like "Is this person an independent contractor or an employee?" There's too many variables generally to give a clear yes or no in many cases and firms selling software doing this are building in some big data/machine learning based algorithms to give risk tolerances etc...

*Real STEM people please excuse me if I used any tech terms in the wrong way.

04/19/2018 - 4:41am Bells Pizza was not so good

Bells Pizza was not so good but their calzones were top shelf. 917 packard here...

on thursdays after class id use to buy 2 40ozs and a bells calzone. that was one way to save money instead of going out for drinks....

04/12/2018 - 4:15pm Yeah comcast looks like it's

Yeah comcast looks like it's doing the contract thing (like UVERSE). I am moving and can only get comcast... They want a 2 year deal...

04/12/2018 - 4:13pm I will be too. I think

I will be too. I think Comcast has a monopoly on my neighborhood though so I will have to think about what to do....

How fucking stupid can they be? Is this because the NBC thing and Fox w/ B10?? Considering writing the FCC about how Comcast is limiting non NBC content which the merger told them NOT TO DO.

I have Youtube TV too and it is good. However, it's not the same as watching on cable.

04/12/2018 - 4:04pm Looks like comcast isn't

Looks like comcast isn't dropped in the midwest. At least from the context of this convo. I will say that it is impossible to get a coherent answer for them (and this is after a few messages) and it appears they may have outsources their customer support on twitter. EDIT*** JUST KIDDING

04/09/2018 - 6:03pm Wow, MSU may have implicated

Wow, MSU may have implicated itself w/ the tuition refund. I hope some of that discussion is in writing...

04/04/2018 - 4:52pm Looks like a great strategy

Looks like a great strategy to go 6-6 and 8-17.

03/19/2018 - 12:40am Not a bad deal to collect a

Not a bad deal to collect a UM and Berk degree through football. Congrats!

03/16/2018 - 12:23pm The scream was insanely

The scream was insanely annoying. But that should never warrant threats on Twitter. However, I’m not surprised that the cesspool of the twitterverse made threats.

03/08/2018 - 2:35am I understand there's no

I understand there's no retainer, but nearly $1000/hr is a lot. This also isn't anti-trust. It's Title IX compliance etc... Not sure what the fuck MSU is doing.

03/07/2018 - 8:12pm Hamilton is the one show I

Hamilton is the one show I actually want to watch (versus all the ones my parents dragged me to when I was a kid). But, I just can't afford it. My grad school had an allotment of like 20 tickets they lotteryed off at like $75 a pop. They went QUICK.

I still need to the check out the Book of Mormon.
