If coach wants to use members of the media for positive publicity then it is logically to think the media would want a trade off in return. It is suppose to be a give and take relationship. Feed local reporters positive stories to publish and in return give them insider information to help further their own careers as well.

The problem is Rome's comments are one-sided and ridiculous. Just because he is erratic and sometimes rude to reporters doesn't mean he's a miserable person, that's an incredible leap to conclusions; there are numerous examples that Rome ignores for some reason. Furthermore, Harbaugh has actually given the media a decent amount of exposure, holding way more open practices for fans and media than his predecessors, so not even the media necessarily have a reason to complain. Oh, and by the way, he's given them more offseason fodder to write about than any other coach in the country, so I'm not exactly feeling bad for reporters vis a vis getting Harbaugh and Michigan stories.

We also take issue that he goes off the deep end and uses this as evidence that we're going to tire of him in a few years and he'll be gone. Where is the evidence of that? Because Jed York, the most immature owner in the NFL couldn't work with him? He isn't wearing thin on anyone at U of M because we see both sides; the petulence toward the media and the joy he gets from coaching and recruiting and holding camps. From our perspective, the media can go fuck themselves. They haven't done us a ton of favors recently so I don't think we're going to get up in arms over stuff like this.

Hope this helps.

Harbaugh treats the media with the respect they've earned. Most are no talent dillbags who went to Syracuse to become the next 'ESPN tool'/insert name but who never played sports in any form. So they ask stupid and inane questions to get a sound bite and Harbaugh sees it as a waste of time. I agree. Jim Rome is a dork with no audience who was dying to have Harbaugh reply to him. It's the biggest thing for him in years.

This is an excellent point.  The media is being petulant.  Even if Harbaugh chooses to go into submarine mode during this part of the year, he's just so damned interesting when he is available to the media, that it makes up for it in spades.

If you're a sports reporter, who would you rather cover?

A vanilla coach who is forthcoming and frequently available at news conferences?  Or a guy who might give limited access to the media in August, but otherwise creates fascinating copy and is one of the most interesting guys to cover in sports?

No offense, but what did you expect when you lead off with, "I'm a fan of tOSU"?

The real problem with Rome's post is that it is all ad hominem couched in a woe-is-me, coach won't answer a reporter's question on a topic that few, if any coaches, will talk about.  The 'article' is simply a rant.  Personally, I find it funny that anyone would bother going the route of trying to publicly shame Harbaugh into compliance, given his personality.  Rome might try to score some points with Harbaugh detractors, citing Harbaugh's response as proof of his point, but ultimately, so what?  What's the point other than to try and get a personal shot in at the coach?  For those that enjoy this sort of thing, they'll lap it up.  For those that don't, it'll get talked about for all of two minutes and then forgotten until Feinbaum picks it up and runs with it as a special next week, at which point it'll be forgotten much faster, if noticed at all.

insterest from Buckeye backers, enough to come here and comment on what is essentially one of those issues that coach and the media tend to battle over from time to time, greater access and more information about internal coaching decisions that frequently cause a scene.

In recent days, this is the second time I've read a national correspondent or talk show host suggest that Jim Harbaugh's shelf life in Ann Arbor will be limited because he gets on everyone's nerves and wears out his welcome and so he will soon be seeking greener pastures, possibly in the NFL. Really, based on what evidence? This conclusion is about as stupidly shortsighted as were the ongoing predictions about's Harbaugh's desicion-making during his final days as coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

The guy just got  here and started on his Michigan legacy. Why would he leave? And where is the public negativity about him except from afar by people who judge his character as cartoonish and then predict how he will respond based on nothing more than overheated bullshit.

Can I offer a little insidght about the feeling for Coach Harbaugh among Michigan fans: We want this guy for as long as he wants to coach here.

He's done nothing but improve this program and reshaped the mindset of his roster and program and put it in discussion phase as a possible playoff challenger this season. What's not to like -- that he didn't beat MSU and Ohio State -- yet?

Michigan fans don't care about his media relations. If he wants to communicate, he will. That's the media headache figuring out the boundaries of dealing with him and his program. The press has a job, and I respect their curiouslty on our behalf, and I haven't actually heard any Michigan press people bitch about their treatment. It just comes from afar by someone commenting without a stake in local coverage with no responsibility about offering his opinion on the matter.  And it's an opinion not highly regarded, for that matter.

at some point you just gotta realize that the more you defend yourself when you've already been negged to oblivion, the more points you'll lose. Stay quiet for a little bit and people might forget and you can stop the bleeding a bit. and this is coming from someone who made a stupid comment one time and got over 100 negs on it. I'm still kickin...then again I'm also not an osu fan.

University, not Ohio State. Apparently, your insecure fan base and university community felt the need to distinguish your school from the one in Athens just because.

Gee, all the folks that I know who went to OU, never concerned themselves with that distinction or history lesson. It's Ohio State which felt underapprecitated and therefore pushed to have the precede its mention. I mean that the doesn'r translate when you do your O-H-I-O cheer, now deoes it? In fact, there is no mention of state in any of the fanfare and i-dotting in any of your school's traditions. So why do you all feel so insecure about your school name?

The football team didn't start playing for another 12 years after the school's name change, so it had nothing to do with the fan base. That said, it very well could have been the president's (Orton) need to set the school apart from OU and others, and perhaps insecurity was a major factor. Heck, it certainly seems that way. Regardless, it is The Ohio State University, and I think there's simply a certain amount of joy in knowing that it gets under people's skin. When asked where I went to college, I respond with, "Ohio State," unless I'm talking to a UM or ND fan, in which case I'll throw the article in there just for shits and giggles. If nobody cared about it, it may go away.

Also, to say there's no fanfare whatsoever alluding to "State" is slightly off (though the majority of cheers do only say "OHIO"), as the crowd/band yells "State" after: Our honor defend, we will fight to the end for O-HI-O... but yea, that's about it.

As for the topic at hand, I'm a diehard Buckeye fan, but these little Twitter "fights" are hilarious. Should the reporter(s) have asked for the information? Sure, why not? It's their job to try and get the information out to the fans/readers. Should Harbaugh have given out the information? Completely up to him and the school's policies. He certainly wasn't obligated to do so. And his behavior? That's who he is. If you are expecting differently, it's not gonna happen, and, quite frankly, doesn't need to change.

Can't wait till November!

Your skin? Maybe not, though suggesting I'm an idiot for using the word "The" sort of suggests otherwise. However, even if it doesn't bug you, it bothers a LOT of people, and some fans just think it sounds cool to say. Either way, it quite literally causes no harm, so... meh.

consulting group that couldn't add anything more to their work product than a ridiculous article. To poke just a bit more, I would be seriously disappointed with anyone from Ross who suggests a branding solution like THE and mortified if UM (with counsel from Ross) ever approved anything as vapid as THE. It's such poor decision-making that even in hindsight OSU should ditch it. OTOH, keep using it and continue to display OSU "brilliance."

Here we go. One of the I'm not obsessed with Michigan, I respect the rivalry, but your coach is an ass and your team stinks.

Sharks, it's unoriginal and I don't want to waste my time on the shitter responding.

I think he was pissed that he had to come out of the submarine. Maybe reporters caught him just having a bad day? People are allowed to have a shitty day. Maybe practice ended in a bad note?

Our coach has had a busy summer and now wants to get to football.

Translation: I'm an Ohio State fan so I automatically have the opposite viewpoint regardless of what has happened and have therefore sided with Jim freaking Rome. (Which should say something about me as a human, actually)

Do you just toss aside "the miserable part?" That is a pretty personal and inflammatory comment. That, and just like those reporters can ask all they want, he can walk away if he wants to. Repetitive questions are a waste of a busy man's time. Jim Harbaugh, and even Urban Meyer, don't have time for bullshit. So..he walked away. This thing is being made too big of a deal. But hey, Jim Rome can capitalize so he may get more listeners as a result of his "hot take".

Two legal issues. One suspension.  No explanation.

December 2015, Adolphus Washington suspended for Fiesta Bowl. (1 misdemeanor)

Ezekiel Elliot  NOT suspended for Fiesta Bowl.  (3 misdemeanors)

Your boy was clear to the media that he wasn't going to describe the differences in their "offenses", but he let Elliot play. He was very short with his response when asked about why Elliot could play.  "I'm not going to get into much more detail than that".  Now if Jim Rome called out Urban for not going into great detail in regards to the differences -- what would your reaction be?

Nevermind. That thought process may be beyond your capability.

He answered the question. Why does he have to out the kids? Reporters know the line and they always try and cross it. He could have just said that is an internal issue and ignored the very first question.

I think Harbaugh is generally open with the media and gives what he feels is as much info as he wants. He as a coach has a right to protect his players. I think it is a good move to not out the kids because we all know the media will hound them and or their families to find out the story and dig up all the dirt on the kids.

how dumb. go back and watch the video of urban undressing the reporter on osu`s practice field.  he marched straight to him, got in his face and threatened him. oh, im sorry that was king urban, he can do whatever he wants and you idiots just eat it up and defend it..
