Meltdown?

They had been predicting for months that DPJ was all blue. But yes, the comments section was filled with the normal photos of Hart, Kalis, etc. Regarding the passing game, there are several Buckeyes that played for Urban currently getting an NFL paycheck as a WR, so it seems to be working out ok for them.

Irony?

"Staee fans are just dumb and pathetic."

Agree to disagree Your skin? Maybe not, though suggesting I'm an idiot for using the word "The" sort of suggests otherwise. However, even if it doesn't bug you, it bothers a LOT of people, and some fans just think it sounds cool to say. Either way, it quite literally causes no harm, so... meh.
1870s insecurity is probably correct

The football team didn't start playing for another 12 years after the school's name change, so it had nothing to do with the fan base. That said, it very well could have been the president's (Orton) need to set the school apart from OU and others, and perhaps insecurity was a major factor. Heck, it certainly seems that way. Regardless, it is The Ohio State University, and I think there's simply a certain amount of joy in knowing that it gets under people's skin. When asked where I went to college, I respond with, "Ohio State," unless I'm talking to a UM or ND fan, in which case I'll throw the article in there just for shits and giggles. If nobody cared about it, it may go away.

Also, to say there's no fanfare whatsoever alluding to "State" is slightly off (though the majority of cheers do only say "OHIO"), as the crowd/band yells "State" after: Our honor defend, we will fight to the end for O-HI-O... but yea, that's about it.

As for the topic at hand, I'm a diehard Buckeye fan, but these little Twitter "fights" are hilarious. Should the reporter(s) have asked for the information? Sure, why not? It's their job to try and get the information out to the fans/readers. Should Harbaugh have given out the information? Completely up to him and the school's policies. He certainly wasn't obligated to do so. And his behavior? That's who he is. If you are expecting differently, it's not gonna happen, and, quite frankly, doesn't need to change.

Can't wait till November!

If you substitute the

If you substitute the schools' names/colors, it still works, as I'm sure it would with many colleges and fan bases.

"The problem is the wider fanbase and more specifically the old school fans, ranging from alumni to high school dropouts, who operate a Michigan cargo cult. By covering themselves from head to toe in maize and blue, worshiping at the altar of UM football, and seizing every opportunity to out-FuckOhio the next guy, they prove their loyalty to UM and inflate their self-worth."

As you mentioned with the band, it's proven to be an interesting issue. It seemed like an obvious decision at first, but more facts have come out and pushed it into more of a gray area. Nearly everyone listed in the initial report has since said that they were not asked the important questions and that the director had taken significant steps in changing the culture. Similarly, they have all said that he did not refer to band members by their nicknames and did not attend the midnight ramp and other student-lead events. Like many have said, he didn't appear to have done enough to change the culture immediately, and "it's always been that way" is not a defense.

It was sent by an OSU coach,

It was sent by an OSU coach, likely created and passed on by a fan, but was not Silverman's work.  The quality is poor, and I highly doubt he'd have left a UM wristband on Weber, as you can see in the photo.

Wow

You're definitely a "glass half full" kind of fan, huh?

stretching to stir the pot?

So "The Bucks third string DL is full of guys that would be seeing the field in the bulk of the Big Ten this year" is the same as “Our backups would start on any other team in the Big Ten!” ??  ??

See the field for a bulk or start on any... kind of a stretch, no?

Did you make this up?

"On a side note, the writer had to go ahead and say something along the lines of “Our backups would start on any other team in the Big Ten!” which is just so OSU. Why do they keep doing this? Are they basing this on star ratings?"

None of that appears in the article you referenced, so were you just stirring the pot?

As an OSU fan

you have to laugh at the play card because it was incredibly accurate...and painful
