This is a shitty situation all around. But didn't his family help create the way he is with everything they gave him as far back as high school? Namely booze, and expensive cars plus excesories (rims and the like).

No, buying nice things for your kids does not turn them into drug addicts. But we aren't simply talking about a few nice things here. From everything that has been said about the subject, it sounds as if his family were giving him everything he wanted, whenever he wanted it. Hence the booze and expensive cars as far back as high school mention. Again, no, buying nice things doesn't make a kid a drug addict. But there is such a thing as going too far. You don't get to the point Manziel is overnight. And let's not act like there weren't huge red flags when he was in college. Or, apparently, coming out of high school.

Last winter I saw Manziel and Mike Evans absolutely blastered at a bar on 6th street in Austin. Mike Evans was being nice to everyone, even when my friend aked him what it was like playing for such an awful team. Manziel was doing exactly what you'd expect.

How much of a fuckup do you have to be for an agent to fire YOU? Apparently now we know... To be fair, there are really only three things to do in Cleveland: 1. Eat 2. Drink. Like a lot. 3. Pray for the sweet relief of death.

Serious issues for a guy who happens to be extremely talented so some of you care how it relates to your entertainment. His dad thinking he may not survive too many more months is probably close to the truth. Very sad.

What's Johnny messing up his life with? Is it just alchohol or has he been using for heavier drugs? Sounds like a substance abuse issue to me.  He can't control himself.   If so why hasn't the league picked it up in a test?

He threatened to kill himself and his girlfriend, he's pretty close to rock bottom, which is usually what has to happen for people to realize they need to turn things around

Look, I hope he gets the help he needs and gets better, but honestly, I'm low on sympathy for him. He has been blessed with almost everything one could need in life and resources to address his issues that most never have. And refuses to use any of it.

No matter what kind of shit he pulled.  He couldn't handle it when it didn't work that way anymore.

Having said that, this kid needs serious help.

Coming from a person who has an addict in the family, progress is only made when the person is finally sick and tired of being sick and tired.

There's little doubt that Manziel is done with the Browns, and it seems as if he'll have a hard time making it on an NFL roster next season.

If this is heading down the road that it seems, then short of an incredible turnaround, I have doubts that he's ever make an NFL roster again. As easy a target as Manziel is and for totally legitimate reasons, any story where things like addiction ultimately work to destory a person is a story you never want to see and, jokes about him aside, I wouldn't wish it on Manziel either. One of my sisters went down a similar road - struggling with dependency and finding herself in awful situation or being the instigator of awful situations as a result - and it did not end well, I'll put it like that.

I sincerely hope he does get help before it is too late.

Manziel sounds like he's got real problems and also it sounds like he doesn't surround himself with the best people to help him. I'd guess this doesn't end well, but I doubt he dies. I also think he's more likely to end up in jail than playing in the NFL again.

I will admidt it.  I was (and maybe still am a little bit) a HUGE Johnny Football fan.  I was beyond excited when the Browns drafted him and I was there last October when he got his first start against the Bengals.  I can tell you walking into the stadium that day there was an energy and excitement that we Browns fans seldom (if ever) get to feel.  And then he laid a giant turd and that basically ended that last year.

This year seemed different though - at least at the start.  He came in for a concussed McCown in game one and on the second series unleashed a beutiful 60 yard bomb for a TD.  We lost the game but damn he was fun to watch.  Then game two against Tennessee he led us to victory with again, two long bombs, the last one being totally JF with him running around and throwing the ball sidearmed against his body for an imossible TD.  For a day at least it was fun to be a Browns fan.

Everyone knows how this has ended.  And I'm sad for Johnny but I'm also sad for me and all the other Browns fans who hoped beyond hope we had finally found our QB.  Now it's ending beyond badly, we've got a new coach (again) and we're going to have to find a new QB (again).

And I will miss watching him play.  He made a shitty team interesting to watch at least.

I would to. The guy is a train wreck with some really serious problems that go beyond the football. He went and beat Alabama and he's been thinking he's God ever since.

He might get one more shot with a team looking for some backup depth next season, but I'd bet he's played his last meaningful snap in the NFL.

He's just getting worse and worse. This is very bad, and as much as some of these celebrity trainwrecks can be entertaining at times, any sort that involves chemical dependence is just really really sad and rarely ends well.

I don't blame them for going after him. The Browns needed a shot in the arm and had to be willing to take some kind of risk to bring in what could've been a franchise player that would've put butts in seats and added some swagger to a downtrodden team. The Browns have been so bad for so long, the mentality almost had to be "what do we have to lose?" If he sucks, we're bad for another 2-3 years, but we've been bad forever so whatever. If he's good, we look like geniuses.

I'll admit, as a Bucs fan, part of me wished they'd brought Manziel in, but bringing in Mike Evans and waiting on Winston was a far better alternative.

...the only people in the Browns organization that didn't see that were Haslam and whoever the random guy was in the street (supposedly homeless but I'm guessing every working class guy Haslam bumps into looks "homeless" to him)  that told him to draft Manziel.

This thread makes is crystal clear which MGoBloggers have dealt with addiction and which ones haven't.

It also makes it sadly apparent which MGoBloggers think addicts are scum.

This is just really unfortunate for an athlete with so much potential. I'm no psychologist but the tough love thing regards to his dad is one of the best things to do. Manziel could be a legit force in the league with all his strings aside. Hopefully he finds help before he loses it all
