Depth Chart By Class 2016
Hello. Every year we prune the seniors and bump everybody up a year to maintain our overview of the Michigan roster. It lives under the "Useful Stuff" tab and is a wiki page editable by anyone with 500 points. Note that early-enrollee commits have already been moved into the "freshmen" column since they're on campus with the exception of Brandon Peters, who will arrive as soon as he's done with the Army game.
Ed-S: Now with mouseovers! Hold your mouse over each name to get the latest height, weight, and player he most would resemble if he totally pans out.* Click takes you to his recruiting profile, or if that's not available his Hello: post.

Allotted: 92/85
Walk-Ons Or Scholarship Players: Ryan Glasgow is assumed to be on scholarship, as are all three specialists. That latter may be incorrect.
Recruits: 16 plus attrition
Latest Updates:
1/1 – updated for 2016
Like "YMRMFSPA" in this site's recruiting profiles, it doesn't say Kaleb Ringer is Sam Sword or even that we think he's a future Sam Sword, just that if he were to reach the outer bounds of reasonable expectation a senior starting Ringer may resemble Sword. For most the original recruiting YMRMFSPA is listed, though I've updated many of the upperclassmen to reflect renewed expectations.

For me the mouseovers are only working for the Junior and Senior classes.
January 5th, 2016 at 11:42 AM ^
I get a FEW of the Sophomores to come up, but only about 4, the rest don't work at all on underclassmen or recruits.

Yes it will as we now start the attrition debate.

Looking at the list, I guess I can see that...
No schollie (special teamers / walkons): (3) Allen, Sypniewski, David
Not asked back: (4) Strobel, Bars?, Gant?, Richardson?
Possible transfers: (4) Green, Taylor-Douglass, a QB, McCray?
That's 11 right there, not counting any recruits on the board as committs that end up not in the class. You'd like to give Allen a schollie I'd think, but would Harbuagh not renew Bars or Gant with the depth at those positions? It'll be tight, especially if some of those transfers don't come on, so there might be some grayshirting in the recruiting class to make numbers.
January 5th, 2016 at 11:31 AM ^
Agree with 3/4 of your non-renewed 5th years...I think we're too thin at LB to let Gant go. Ditto that for McCray.
January 5th, 2016 at 11:38 AM ^
The talk on McCray is he may not be an option due to an injury issue. There has been talk that he has been injured for a couple years so it may be career ending. Gant I agree on with the LB depth. Could also see a few WRs and DBs transfer for playing time and there may be a few who just don't dig the Harbaugh style of team and gave it a go for a year.

I believe that David and Sypniewski are scholarship guys from the beggining of their careers at UM. Their scholarships cannot be pulled....
So we do need more attrition, which is hard to peg at this point. You really never know, remember the situations from last year with Countess or Jack Miller. Who would have predicted these guys departing?
January 5th, 2016 at 1:52 PM ^
We also have a couple "cold shoulder" type decommits (ugh, no me gusto) we're kind of assuming too. Also one who is rumored to have grade issues, although I can't remember if he's one of the one's that's lost contact with the staff or not.

I'm pretty sure Drake Harris played in the Bowl game, for 2-3 snaps on final drive. Also he may have been back to receive the final punt, not 100% on that one...
January 5th, 2016 at 3:31 PM ^
Confirmed that he was the returner on the last punt.
January 5th, 2016 at 2:58 PM ^
I think Harris was targeted in the endzone for a pass at the end of the last drive where we got the FG.

what is needed to have enough scholarships for all the commits listed. As someone else mentioned, UM is still chasing Gary, Crawford, etc., etc. Depending on how many of these recruits end up pick UM, it will probably be more than 7 scholarships that need to be available.
January 5th, 2016 at 9:11 PM ^
Its been mentioned that some recruits were told they would be greyshirts, and it's expected a few will decommit from the class. I'd expect that to be 3-6 of the current commits who won't be in this class.
January 5th, 2016 at 4:11 PM ^
Sypniewski and David have scholarships. Allen was a walk-on but was given a scholarship this year. They arent going to take that away after this season, especially when he may have more responsibilities next year.
Don't disagree much with the rest of your list, I could see a WR or two being on it as well.

Wow, didn't realize how big next years senior class would be. Definitely the year to go for the playoffs. Also means the 2017 class will be pretty big though looking at the list of seniors to be I don't expect a few of them to be back next year.
January 5th, 2016 at 11:24 AM ^
If we can get a high level of QB play and most others see continued trajectory (and good health, of course), 2016 could be a special year.

Rudock was a high level player the last 4 or so games. But before that? Decidely average, perhaps below. That's likely not anyone's fault, as it takes time to get acclimated, etc. But it's the truth.
If we're going for the natl championship in 2016, you need to have good (if not great) QB play in the first half of the season, especially since it is no gimme we will have a top-notch running game (hopefully we will, but it's definitely not a sure thing).
January 5th, 2016 at 4:56 PM ^
Except the 1st half of our season sets up perfectly for a new qb to get comfortable with our system. Couldn't have hand-picked an easier schedule for O'Korn and company to get ready for the B1G season.

Come on Ace, you think Ben Gedeon is Jarrett Irons or will be future Jarrett Irons? That's just ridiculous. I have a problem with this whole chart now and by extension this whole site.

Come on FreddieMercuryHayes, you think Ace is Brian or will be the future Brian? That's just ridiculous. I have a problem with this whole comment now and by extension your whole account.

are done before the guys play a down at michigan are meant to give us an idea of what kind of player the guy would be if he totally pans out. Easy fella.

I'd bet with all the attention he'll be getting next year they'll move him around. Not to mention the influx of WR talent coming in the freshman class.
January 5th, 2016 at 11:29 AM ^
I knew that we returned a lot next year, but looking at this chart, this is going to be the most senior-heavy, talented, experienced team that we have seen in a LONG time. Aside from Rudock (which is a huge loss) and the LBs (who were not that great this year), we return just about the entire team!

At some key points. I'm looking at the OL and DB after the 2016 season. Unless Canteen figures it out as a DB, we will be relying on some real young players after next season, especially if Peppers leaves. If there is a coaching staff I think will develop the players, this is the one.

What's the over/under on him transferring vs. coming back and trying to win the starting job?

Is there significance to the order that names are listed within a given box?
(Apologies if this is obvious. It's early out West.)
January 5th, 2016 at 11:48 AM ^
That's a heck of a senior class. Our best in a long time.

What happened to the Senior haikus Brian used to do for departing players before the last game? I miss those.
January 5th, 2016 at 11:50 AM ^
there is only one FB on this chart. Could he make a transition? He has the frame for it.
January 5th, 2016 at 2:09 PM ^
January 5th, 2016 at 3:01 PM ^
FBs were just an apparent afterthought for the prior two coaching regimes. But Harbaugh loves using them (and not only as lead blockers). Henry Poggi — recruited as a DT — played FB in 12 games this year and had no rushing attempts and only one pass reception for 2 yards. Certainly the primary interest on offense in the Spring and Fall camps will revolve around the QB war and OL chess game. Still, I'm curious as to who will form the FB two-deep.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:54 PM ^
Well, Nussmeier doesn't use FBs in his system, so, there's that. FB is also very often a walk-on or positional switch position. Unfortunately, they often are converted from LBs, which *sad trombone*.
January 5th, 2016 at 9:19 PM ^
He may have the frame, but has he ever shown the desire? How willing is he to be a lead blocker? Shallman seem the more likely to make the move, and may be open to the move after seeing how Houma was used this year.
January 5th, 2016 at 11:51 AM ^
Between TE/WR/Slot and backs who can catch, we are just stacked. One of the cool things about this regime is that with really good coaching, some of the players we've all come to think of as meh might switch to another gear next year. Beyond seeing the team win, it's fun as a fan to see guys break out due to hard work and good coaching.
