Depth Chart By Class 2016 Comment Count

Brian

Hello. Every year we prune the seniors and bump everybody up a year to maintain our overview of the Michigan roster. It lives under the "Useful Stuff" tab and is a wiki page editable by anyone with 500 points. Note that early-enrollee commits have already been moved into the "freshmen" column since they're on campus with the exception of Brandon Peters, who will arrive as soon as he's done with the Army game.

Latest Updates:

1/1 – updated for 2016

Like "YMRMFSPA" in this site's recruiting profiles, it doesn't say Kaleb Ringer is Sam Sword or even that we think he's a future Sam Sword, just that if he were to reach the outer bounds of reasonable expectation a senior starting Ringer may resemble Sword. For most the original recruiting YMRMFSPA is listed, though I've updated many of the upperclassmen to reflect renewed expectations.

Looking at the list, I guess I can see that...

No schollie (special teamers / walkons): (3) Allen, Sypniewski, David

Not asked back: (4) Strobel, Bars?, Gant?, Richardson?

Possible transfers: (4) Green, Taylor-Douglass, a QB, McCray?

That's 11 right there, not counting any recruits on the board as committs that end up not in the class. You'd like to give Allen a schollie I'd think, but would Harbuagh not renew Bars or Gant with the depth at those positions? It'll be tight, especially if some of those transfers don't come on, so there might be some grayshirting in the recruiting class to make numbers.

The talk on McCray is he may not be an option due to an injury issue.  There has been talk that he has been injured for a couple years so it may be career ending.  Gant I agree on with the LB depth.  Could also see a few WRs and DBs transfer for playing time and there may be a few who just don't dig the Harbaugh style of team and gave it a go for a year.

I believe that David and Sypniewski are scholarship guys from the beggining of their careers at UM. Their scholarships cannot be pulled....

So we do need more attrition, which is hard to peg at this point. You really never know, remember the situations from last year with Countess or Jack Miller. Who would have predicted these guys departing?

Its been mentioned that some recruits were told they would be greyshirts, and it's expected a few will decommit from the class.  I'd expect that to be 3-6 of the current commits who won't be in this class.

Sypniewski and David have scholarships. Allen was a walk-on but was given a scholarship this year. They arent going to take that away after this season, especially when he may have more responsibilities next year.

Don't disagree much with the rest of your list, I could see a WR or two being on it as well.

With how thin we are at LB, why on earth would McCray transfer? He's all but guaranteed to start. And if he isn't good enough to start, I don't know where he thinks he can transfer and play. If you can't start at LB next year at Michigan as a scholarship upperclassman, maybe football isn't for you.

Wow, didn't realize how big next years senior class would be.  Definitely the year to go for the playoffs.  Also means the 2017 class will be pretty big though looking at the list of seniors to be I don't expect a few of them to be back next year.

Rudock was a high level player the last 4 or so games. But before that? Decidely average, perhaps below. That's likely not anyone's fault, as it takes time to get acclimated, etc. But it's the truth.

If we're going for the natl championship in 2016, you need to have good (if not great) QB play in the first half of the season, especially since it is no gimme we will have a top-notch running game (hopefully we will, but it's definitely not a sure thing).

This is one of the rare posts for which I guess I need to abandon the app and view it on a native web browser. Which I am fine doing, of course, but just putting in a small plug for you to consider future/current technologies. Thanks for this great info.

I'd bet with all the attention he'll be getting next year they'll move him around.  Not to mention the influx of WR talent coming in the freshman class.

I knew that we returned a lot next year, but looking at this chart, this is going to be the most senior-heavy, talented, experienced team that we have seen in a LONG time. Aside from Rudock (which is a huge loss) and the LBs (who were not that great this year), we return just about the entire team!

At some key points.  I'm looking at the OL and DB after the 2016 season.  Unless Canteen figures it out as a DB, we will be relying on some real young players after next season, especially if Peppers leaves.  If there is a coaching staff I think will develop the players, this is the one.

It does him no good to leave now. He would have to sit out a year and still only have one year of eligibility left. Or stay try to win the starting job and have Harbaugh coach you for another year. If you don't win the job graduate with a Michigan degree and go the grad transfer route.

FBs were just an apparent afterthought for the prior two coaching regimes. But Harbaugh loves using them (and not only as lead blockers). Henry Poggi — recruited as a DT — played FB in 12 games this year and had no rushing attempts and only one pass reception for 2 yards. Certainly the primary interest on offense in the Spring and Fall camps will revolve around the QB war and OL chess game. Still, I'm curious as to who will form the FB two-deep.

Between TE/WR/Slot and backs who can catch, we are just stacked.  One of the cool things about this regime is that with really good coaching, some of the players we've all come to think of as meh might switch to another gear next year.  Beyond seeing the team win, it's fun as a fan to see guys break out due to hard work and good coaching.
