That's not how the press box works. It's a temporary pass.
They're really anal about security and blah blah blah in the pressbox. I have to be checked by police dogs before going upstairs.
September 18th, 2015 at 11:18 PM ^
All the more reason to look like you have your shit together as you head to the press box.

If you are thinking about this sort of thing as a career, don't wear a jersey or anything M branded. I know it seems dumb, but there are a lot of people who take that sort of thing very seriously and will judge you for wearing something like that.

WD, I'm a Graduate Assistant in one of the top athletic departments in the nation (I'm not at Michigan unfortunetly). I've also worked for another D1 athletic department, and a USHL hockey team that sometimes involves work around press boxes, press row, and filming areas. If you want to do this full time and not just as a test run, I would highly recommend that you don't do something stupid like wearing a jersey. Granted I don't know what the work environment is like in the Michigan Athletic Department, but at all those stops that I mentioned, everyone there was dressed between shirt, tie, sometimes suit, or department issued polos/windbreakers worn with nicer pants. I've interacted with several AD's, high end administrators, and a hockey hall of famer who was our team's general manager, and all of them eat up the notion of professional attire, to the point that that they notice when someone is dressed unprofessionally. Sticking out in this manner is not something I would recommend if you want to be taken seriously, especially when you haven't even been completly assured of having this job going forward.
In addition, any job that is involved with any sport, features a lot of competition for even the lowest of jobs (Except for maybe minor league hockey). You can never be confident that you will be assured of the job going forward. You have nothing to gain by risking your opportunity by wearing a jersey.
My advice, suck it up, and wear something that you would wear to a office casual job. If you can, wear in Michigan colors, or wear a Michigan polo or windbreaker.

Wearing a jersy when no one else does is like handing in a resume with spelling errors. It's not about if you can spell or not, or about if the jersey is distracting or not, it's about the fact that you didn't care enough to do things the right way. There are plenty of people that care enough to do things the right way. If you were hiring why would you ever mess with someone who doesn't think that matters?

So Art Vuolo wants to give you a shot, and you're going to blow it by dressing like a fanboy.

you could always bring your fan clothes in a duffle bag, and then change quickly before you take your seat for game time.

People aren't going to forget your face the second you leave the press box. Play it safe, don't miss out on a great opportunity because of something like this.

Every once in a while I try to be nice and offer friendly advise, because I think you're generally a good guy who's just a bit too obsessed and immature. This is one of those times.
If this is something you would like to do in the future, or even to use as a way to expand your network; dress the part. Leave the goddamn jersey in your closet. Wear khakis and a nice polo, look the part. Don't blow a golden opportunity.

If he needs this thread to convince him, he doesn't deserve the job. So go ahead and wear the jersey.
September 19th, 2015 at 5:39 AM ^
Eh. Everyone has to be taught at some point who to adult and do adult job things. Dress for the job you want, make it easy for them to see you in that position and it'll be easier for you to get it

as an intern in college wearing a jersey is a seriously frowned upon. No fandom is permitted in what is supposed to be a professional and impartial environment. He will look a like a complete idiot wearing a jersey in the press box.
September 18th, 2015 at 10:29 PM ^
To be fair, I look like an idiot all the time.

Guess what - I wear wrestling and political tee shirts most days. I'm an accountant, I wear dress clothes at work.

Wait ... what?! That's unforgiveable. Shameful.
You're an accountant?! :-)
j/k ... fine profession ... very challenging profession.

That way you still pay homage to Harbaugh whilst looking professional. A jersey not so much.
Wear what the coach wears.

how you look and how you carry yourself is a choice, and not making a choice is a choice.
