Semi OT - serious question that WD is afraid to ask...

Submitted by MGJS SuperKick Party on
i know this will get negged to shit, and I am only posting this to make a point to our favorite obsessed fan... WD has a great opportunity to work in the press box going forward this season, and potentially in the future. Tomorrow is his first test run. Ok here comes the fun part -- Me, LongLiveB0, and LSAClassof2000 have all attempted to talk him out of wearing a jersey to the press box and dress more conservative (Think Jay Harbaugh) as opposed to jersey, sweatbands and Harbaugh Khakis. What do you guys think? I am fully anticipating this getting deleted shortly, but it's to prove a point to our idiot buddy. I am sure he will post here to defend his thought process soon enough...

I'll put it like this. You are about to go on the first date with the most beautiful woman in the world and you've been crushing on her hard. All of your friends tell you, "Holy shit, bro! So jealous! Hey, take her out to a nice dinner and go see this funny movie! Our girlfriends all wanted to do that and they loved it, so there's no way she won't like you after that!" And they all have hot enough girlfriends (although not as hot as this woman), so why the hell shouldn't you at least try it? But no, you tell them you want to go to a rodeo and take her out to McDonald's afterwards instead. They all look at you like you're crazy, but you insist, "It's not THAT bad..." Don't be the stubborn dude who blew his chance at sex every night with the hottest woman in the world just because he thought Rodeo and McDonald's was an appropriate substitution for Red Lobster and a movie she wants to see.

If this is a job opportunity and you came in dressed wearing your jeresy it shows how serious you're taking it... and if you're really expecting to walk back down to your seat in the stands than you should wear your jersey and enjoy the game as a fan because you're already expecting to fail. If you really want to make this work, take your friends advice and dress professional... and if this guy told you that you will have to leave after pregame I am sure if you dressed the part, were respectful, kept your mouth shut (unless spoken to) and made yourself useful that he wouldn't mind you sticking around for the game. Even if he asked you to leave, I'd politely ask him if it would be alright if you stuck around incase he needs a hand... My advice- put your big boy pants on.

Still, it doesn't hurt to ask the guy if you could still stick around to lend a hand. It shows that you have a little heart and drive. What's the worst he's going to say? No? OK, no big deal. You can change into your jersey when you get to your seat. Like everyone else has been saying, youll need to pull out all the stops and act the part. Also, immediately text or email him a thank you when your job is done. Who knows, the next time around he may consider keeping you on board for good!

Man when I was your age I thought I wanted to be a beat writer (for Michigan) so badly. Jim Carty came to my journalism class and talked me out of even pursuing it because he basically said that when you cover any sport for a living, being a fan goes out the window. If you can't spend one pregame not being a fan and trying to put on a professional hat maybe working Michigan games as a job is not for you. Or you can try your best to do it one time (for a cupcake game that Michigan will win easily) and just see how you like it. Maybe it won't be as bad as you think it will.

If you are thinking about this sort of thing as a career, don't wear a jersey or anything M branded.  I know it seems dumb, but there are a lot of people who take that sort of thing very seriously and will judge you for wearing something like that.

WD, I'm a Graduate Assistant in one of the top athletic departments in the nation (I'm not at Michigan unfortunetly). I've also worked for another D1 athletic department, and a USHL hockey team that sometimes involves work around press boxes, press row, and filming areas. If you want to do this full time and not just as a test run, I would highly recommend that you don't do something stupid like wearing a jersey. Granted I don't know what the work environment is like in the Michigan Athletic Department, but at all those stops that I mentioned, everyone there was dressed between shirt, tie, sometimes suit, or department issued polos/windbreakers worn with nicer pants. I've interacted with several AD's, high end administrators, and a hockey hall of famer who was our team's general manager, and all of them eat up the notion of professional attire, to the point that that they notice when someone is dressed unprofessionally. Sticking out in this manner is not something I would recommend if you want to be taken seriously, especially when you haven't even been completly assured of having this job going forward.

In addition, any job that is involved with any sport, features a lot of competition for even the lowest of jobs (Except for maybe minor league hockey). You can never be confident that you will be assured of the job going forward. You have nothing to gain by risking your opportunity by wearing a jersey.

My advice, suck it up, and wear something that you would wear to a office casual job. If you can, wear in Michigan colors, or wear a Michigan polo or windbreaker.

Wearing a jersy when no one else does is like handing in a resume with spelling errors. It's not about if you can spell or not, or about if the jersey is distracting or not, it's about the fact that you didn't care enough to do things the right way. There are plenty of people that care enough to do things the right way. If you were hiring why would you ever mess with someone who doesn't think that matters?

N=1 So a bit dangerous to say, but what does the guy you're working with usually wear? Go with his basic level of formality, but to suit your tastes. Or taste your suit. I get those mixed up. If he wouldn't wear a jersey, you shouldn't. At some point in your career you'll have enough status to wear what you want. For now, fit in. Be a team player.

Every once in a while I try to be nice and offer friendly advise, because I think you're generally a good guy who's just a bit too obsessed and immature. This is one of those times.

If this is something you would like to do in the future, or even to use as a way to expand your network; dress the part. Leave the goddamn jersey in your closet. Wear khakis and a nice polo, look the part. Don't blow a golden opportunity.

as an intern in college wearing a jersey is a seriously frowned upon. No fandom is permitted in what is supposed to be a professional and impartial environment. He will look a like a complete idiot wearing a jersey in the press box.
