Duncan Robinson Becomes Fastest Ever to 1,000 3-pointers
Way to go, Duncan! He made his 1,000th triple in his 343rd NBA game, which beat the old record of 350.
Duncan continues to have the second all-time “I didn’t see THAT career coming” among Michigan players, second only to Tom Brady.

It's particularly amazing since he comes off the bench so often, particularly when the rest of his team is healthy.
March 17th, 2024 at 11:23 PM ^
And he's only made 323 two-point FGs and 290 FTs.

Crazy 👀!!

Already has 357 more threes than Larry Bird had in his career.
This blew my mind. Didn't realize how rarely Bird took 3s, especially in his early years.
Right! The overwhelmingly vast majority of my Larry Bird memories are of him hitting some 3 to win a game, or otherwise make his opponent a little more sad that he's guarding Larry fucking Bird. I forget that he played most of his career under the rim.
Believe it or not Larry Bird was probably underrated, if that is possible. I wonder if Magic hadn't been around if Larry would have been a bigger star, or if the rivalry is what made Larry Legend.
Edit: ...and I'm a Pistons fan, so I don't really like Bird.
And 425 more than Michael Jordan, 28 more than Scottie Pippen, 161 more than John Stockton...obviously not prolific 3pt shooters, but still amazing to think of Dunc's accomplishment in that context.
It's just an entirely different game than it was back in the 80s and 90s when the mid range and post up were the emphasis.
I think he has 1,000 more threes(in the NBA) than two other all time greats - Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain - as well as a whole lot more than another Wolverine - Rudy Tomjanovich.
Go DR...
(And - I'm just thinking "DR" - is a fun pair of Michigan initials. Denard Robinson is another "DR" that comes to mind.)

Not hard to do considering both Russell and Chamberlain were retired long before the three-point line existed, and Rudy T only played for two more seasons after the NBA adopted it.
March 18th, 2024 at 11:28 AM ^
Agreed - that three point line - I think it was introduced in the '79-80 season.
March 18th, 2024 at 12:01 PM ^
Thanks for pointing out the initials thing! Me -- and my son -- are also DRs, but never made the connection!
With all due respect, NONE of today's players played an inside game. My guess is today's players don't want to get hurt/physical. JMO.

Wow. Go Blue!
March 17th, 2024 at 11:42 PM ^
You probably didn't know this, but he transferred after playing Division III in college.
March 17th, 2024 at 11:55 PM ^
Wow! Somebody should mention that on a broadcast sometime.
March 17th, 2024 at 11:56 PM ^
I also didn't realize he played with Kentucky Transfer Charles Matthews.
March 18th, 2024 at 12:25 AM ^
Did you know their coach, John Beilein, was never an assistant?
March 18th, 2024 at 12:27 AM ^
You mean the guy that almost won a NC using Canadians and Division III players? That guy was pretty good.
You mean the guy that John U Bacon said might have interest in coaching Michigan if he's asked, but he's not sure if he'll be asked, and nobody knows anything, but anything could happen at this point?
I'm not sure what the odds are that anything could happen, but if JUB is saying that then it's at least plausible that anything could happen.
Shit already happened, so anything could happen next.
March 18th, 2024 at 12:38 AM ^
I 'member that!

As a lifelong, but admittedly casual fan of these two sports, Tom Brady is an excellent football player and will do well in the NFL was a far, far more likely outcome than Duncan Robinson is on an NBA team after his first contract.
His success has surprised everyone except Duncan and maybe a certain J.B.
March 18th, 2024 at 12:25 AM ^
Maybe the claim could have been that Brady being a good football player was more plausible.
Brady being the greatest fucking football player of all time was definitely a less likely outcome for a 6th round part time starter during his college career.
Tom Brady was not a part time starter. He started every game in 1998 and 1999. Yes, Drew Henson played in the second quarter in some games in 1999, but that did not make Tom Brady a part time starter. For the season, Brady was 180/295 for 2217 yards passing, while Drew Henson was 46/89 for 546 yards. Man, that urban legend about Tom Brady not even starting at Michigan will not die.
Agreed. Tom Brady exceeded all expectations. But he was still an excellent prospect and only a little bit behind Drew Henson in fan's eyes.
Wow did we all get that one wrong.
I don't think anyone got it wrong, per se. Imo, had George f'ing Steinbrenner not lured Henson away, he could have been every bit as good as JJ turned out to be. Brady was a very good college QB, but your jaw dropped at Henson's physical ability. His arm talent was elite and he could move, also. He was one of those guys you saw throw and you'd just go, "damn"
Duncan Robinson is on an NBA team after his first contract.
Robinson even making an NBA team in the first place seemed completely bonkers c. 2018.
Then there's the eye test. If you're a Hollywood director assembling a cast for a basketball movie, who would EVER pick Duncan Robinson? Or name a player in the movie "Duncan Robinson"?
March 18th, 2024 at 11:14 AM ^
"Shooter" Robinson
Tom Brady didn't "do well" in the NFL. He became the greatest quarterback of all time. If you saw that coming, well, good for you.
March 18th, 2024 at 10:55 AM ^
No one saw Brady becoming the GOAT, obviously. But the 6th round pick was way late for him. That's just the stupid arrogance of the NFL. That a two-year starting QB at Michigan who won a bunch of games could go on to succeed in the NFL is obviously possible. Yes, the level he took it to is hard to believe. But it's not surprising he would have that opportunity.
Duncan Robinson did not start at Michigan his senior year. He was the sixth man.
He went undrafted in the NBA.
He starts for the Miami Heat and is having as good a career as any Beilein player. Hardaway's is better I guess but that's it. Poole? No.
I still think Duncan gets the prize here, but it makes for a good debate.
Your discussion didn't include Henson...
I’d like to see Duncan’s “told you so” list but he is obviously too busy climbing the ladder to worry about naysayers. Inspirational.
I'm so happy for him!
Amazing. Good for him. Really enjoyed his podcasts when he played for Michigan.
When he was here, he rarely took a deep 3, shot off the dribble, or shot over someone. What a transformation.
Awesome for Duncan! And he's having a great bounce-back year overall.
March 18th, 2024 at 11:18 AM ^
His performance in that game was incredible.

Way to go D III!!
Sharpshooter Duncan, one of my favorite Michigan Basketball players.
Dude is a stud.....resurrecting his career because he finally realized that there is little defense played in the NBA until the playoffs.
Can you imagine if he a Starter for every game of his career. He would’ve broke this record 80 games ago
