Tay'shawn Trent has decommitted (In-State Wide Receiver)

Submitted by DoubleWolverin… on October 26th, 2021 at 3:55 PM

Tay'shawn Trent has decommitted from the class of 2022. He is a recruit from Harper Woods who is a good friend of Will Johnson (5* CB). There were rumours of an impending decommitment, but I do not know the reason.

Michigan now only has Tyler Morris as a receiver recruit, but my thought is that they want 3 in the class.

This was more of Michigan cooling on him, he did not have a good camp season and has not developed.  Good kid though, hope he lands in a good spot, but it might not be Power 5.

Last I heard there were academic issues too. Seems like it was expected as it looks like we have been recruiting Dane Key pretty hard lately

That may be the case but this time 247 and Rivals have been saying the dreaded “he has work to do” for months now — which is an indicator of qualification issues.  Sam Webb (or Lorenz) have been saying Michigan still wanted or would take him if the issues were able to be sorted.

Insider guys and posts here on the site have been strongly hinting at Trent not qualifying or some sort of other academic issue that could prevent him from joining the class for multiple months now.

You can believe what you would like to believe, and  in this case it may be lack of development, but also in this case there was plenty mention of what you claiming no proof of

For the record, and this is not meant as an argument directed at you Quailman (damn fine idea for an avatar and alias btw), I never claimed there was no proof of it.  I said that I had not seen any.  I'll take Qmatic and Seth's update in the post as proof enough.  Still, I stand by my words.  I don't like claims being made about people on the internet without some sort of evidence presented directly following the claim.  I wouldn't want those things being said about me either without evidence to back them up.  It's just a principle I have.

As for these things being said for months on other message boards/recruiting sites, I have no interest in those places.  We've seen many more instances of false rumors spread on those sites than anything resembling journalism.  Also, I don't think it takes much effort to make a claim and follow it up with some evidence directly after it.  Whenever I make a claim, on the internet or in real life, I do my best to follow it up with something concrete as to why I believe it.  We've all been the target of a false claim at some point in our lives and if I can do something to minimize the likelihood of that, I will.

I wasnt saying they were being said on other message boards/sites. Those things have been hinted at and mentioned right here on the site in recruiting updates

I totally understand and support the base of your post, I was just saying that in this case the "UM dropped him because of academics" may not just be spouting off since it has been a not so well-kept secret this was probably going to happen unfortunately.

Kid is going to be a good player, best of luck I feel bad for him because the sand of it was academic based and from the sounds of it UM was his dream school.

Former player of mine. A lot of things going on here, and all added up to this commitment not happening. My former district really failed him academically; wasn’t enough time to turn it around

Without getting in to too much details, but when there is no grade checks, or attendance expectations for athletics from 6th grade on…it quickly can be junior year and you are in a deep hole but have never been taught the other expectations.

East Detroit last season had players who would miss weeks at a time and play. In one case they had a kid “enroll” on a Thursday and play Friday. So many students went virtual and did absolutely nothing. During the shut down there were 75% of HS students who never logged on once.

Tay did a lot last year at ED to try and catch up and Bellamy and Hart have a good relationship with Coach Oden at Harper Woods and they knew that he would be best to try and get everything squared away. It was known this was the most likely outcome but the coaches and Tay did do everything they could in the short amount of time

That's very sad to hear and it echoes my wife's experiences very closely. She taught all of last year downstairs at the dining room table and a majority of her day was spent trying to get kids to attend class and actively engage with them. She had 9th graders so it was especially difficult because, as you said, some of them didn't know what expectations were and many fell far behind.

Some of the onus is on the kid (though that can be traced further up the chain - have to have modeled behavior), but it's a failure of parents, administrators, and some teachers especially. A systemic issue.

At a minimum, Trent will get to go to a DI school on full-ride so this hasn't completely derailed his future. Hopefully he understands the expectations now that he was under Oden for a year and sees what he can accomplish when he does more than what he has been shown.

Yeah it is too bad what happens at a lot of these schools. I worked there, was an elementary admin my final year before moving, coached for years while running the whole middle school athletic program for no stipend. This year it had to go full virtual at the middle school this year because they didn’t have enough teachers, and the HS was one resignation away from doing the same. They have half a dozen at least teachers teaching with emergency certificates (given to someone with a bachelors in anything) trying to manage. When the district has the lowest performing and lowest pay…it’s easy to see what goes wrong.

God, I'm getting tired of athletes giving props to God, and his/her plans for them, including helping them decide which university will get them on the field quickest, and to the next level fastest, etc. etc.  I loved sports as a kid and was kind of superstitious when I played, but it was mostly about what bat to use, what socks to wear; stuff like that.  Even as a teenager I wouldn't have thought to invoke god's good grace to prop me up during a game.

Plus, probably no god.

I won't rabbit hole on this, but wondering if there is an overall "cosmic plan" and some kind of force, being, energy or whatever that set it all in motion and/or has any interest or influence in how it all evolves and believing in the concept of a god or religion are two entirely different things.

To me, religion is simply a human construct that only uses the concept that I alluded to above to create the illusion they have answers to the questions it poses, all for the purpose of self-propagation and to more effectively subjugate their believers and to legitimize their claim to being moral/pious and elevated over non-believers.....with the empty promise of a posthumous payoff of eternal happiness in exchange for their allegiance.

Albert Einstein and Neils Bohr (and various other physicists) have done more to shed light into where we come and what may have been put in place (if not a giant accident) from than any saint, pop, bishop, cult leader.
