New 2020 QB Prospect Visiting This Weekend

Submitted by CincyBlue on December 9th, 2019 at 9:01 PM

Dan Villari is a New York pro style QB who is 6’4 and 215.  His offers include UMass, Albany, Fordham, and Buffalo.  Sam Webb reports it’s an official visit.  Dan is currently not ranked on 24/7.

Yes, it's a highlight tape, but I like the kids moxy and looks like he can definitely play.  Remember though, unless he's a 4 star then he's not acceptable to M fans.  /s

I always get negged for asking this - but given Cade McNamara is redshirt freshman next year, and JJ McCarthy is coming in 2021 - combined with all the reputable QB transfers that now take place in the portal - is it really necessary for us to have a QB in the 2020 class?

Know I am a "spreadsheet jockey", and understand jack squat about big time college football recruiting strategy and operations.  But seems logical to me we can live without a QB recruit for one goddamn year.

And hell - I wouldn't want Albany or Fordham deprived of their "chosen savior"...

Considering the importance of the position, the "miss" rate of a typical recruit, and the transfer portal, it's essential to have at least 1 and preferably 2 QBs every single class.

Imagine all the things that could happen--McNamara doesn't pan out. Dylan gets injured. Milton transfers after losing the starting job. No QB's this class. We could have all our eggs on Dylan for the next season and pretty much the season after. And then all our eggs on McCarthy the season after that.

The programs we want to compete with rarely let that happen.

Is this guy starting really that different than a walk on though? Like russel Bellamy was a wasted scholarship. We’ve only got 85 scholarships, id much rather have a walk on starting what is likely a lost season in 3 years if we get to that point than have less depth at say dt or cb for all 4 years

The lesson you should take from the Russell Bellomy disaster was that we only had 3 scholarship QBs when he played.

If we had had an extra QB ranked around the same as Bellomy, he might have at least lived up to his recruiting ranking. You can't afford to miss when you are leaving yourself short handed.

But one of Milton or McCaffrey are a high risk for transferring. If that happens and we don’t take a 2020 QB, we risk going into 2021 w/ only three scholarship QBs, one being a true freshman. And what if the winner of the job for next year blows up and leaves early or ends up a bust....

Gotta take one every year. The upside - leaving the spot for another recruit - isn’t worth the risk

I know this is a highlight reel, but how is this kid unranked? His athleticism jumps off the screen and his highlight reel goes on and on and on. He is a playmaker with his legs and seems to have good arm strength. DO WANT...to heck with the star gazers.

Rivals has him committed to Fordham. Tape looks nice. They usually do.

Edit: nm decommitted Nov 26

NYHSFB called him "the most underrated QB prospect in the NE"

Holy hell!  I mean, I read the comments before watching the video, but daymmm!!!  Kid has an arm that puts the ball on target 45 yards downfield without having to over work his arm.  I know its a highlight reel, but no WR had to wait for the ball even half a step.  This kid looks like a version of Ronnie Bell...

Did a little research and the kid plays for a team that is much more run dominant -  something like 300-500 yds rushing and 100 yds passing.  Also said that he often plays only the 1st half, as they are blowing out the competition.  The team went 11-0.  The closest game was an 18 pt win  25-7.

The coach was even suspended 1 game for running up the score in a 61 -13 win.  Instead of a mercy rule, the NY league has adopted a policy to limit blowouts.

He rushes for 100 - 200 yds/game
He seems to have a 60 - 65% completion rate.
