Do you want the basketball team to lose a game?

Submitted by Eli on January 11th, 2019 at 10:51 AM

Do you want the team to lose a game. If so, when would be good timing? I personally want them to lose one once they break the record for best start. It takes the monkey off their back. At Wisconsin would be my choice. Perfect time to regroup and focus on another run. I do not want a loss to a rival or in the BTT. Has anyone been a part of a team that had a long streak like this? Observations from you on their mindset would be appreciated.

If I could predict the game they'd lose before hand, I'd be all for it.  Only because I could make bank like Biff did...

Otherwise, no.  They must win all of the games or UNACCEPTABLE!!!

It’s actually an interesting question. I remember having this same conversation with all my Illinois fans regarding their 2004-2005 team.

Most of them said that getting a lose (or 2) under their belts would be beneficial to the long goals of the team. In their minds, the pressure of going undefeated was mounting and getting out of control. So getting that lose at the end of the season to OSU - one that didn’t impact the big ten championship and tourney seeding - was somewhat welcomed since it took some undue pressure off.

Food for thought.

The NCAA Tournament is already a one-and-done deal, regardless of whether you have 10 or 0 losses.  I don't think there's any significant incremental pressure from having an undefeated season on the line in that situation.

(That said, it's likely a moot point, as I don't see us going undefeated.)

What a ridiculous question. Absolutely not.

Michigan fans should want Michigan to win every single sporting event they play for the rest of time.

Prefer that they never do but if they have to, please not against the Spartans, in the Big Ten Tourney or the NCAA tourney.  Outside of that, they can lose every other game....as long as the prerequisites above are met.

Personally I'm hoping for a B1G championship and possibly a National championship.

There is extra graavy along the way I'd definitely take, such as going undefeated against our rivals. Everyone? Yeah, okay. That would be epic but don't count on it.

Do I think the team needs to lose to stay focused? No. I think they need to stay focused to stay focused.

Just win the B1G championship- REGULAR season. That is a great accomplishment and means so much. We aren't going undefeated, so I do not care when we lose. Get to 16 wins. Win a game or two in the BTT and then make a run in NCAA. Simple.

No I don't but they will lose a game so it really doesn't matter. Way too hard to consistently win on the road without dropping a couple games. Now dropping a home game can be a cause for concern.

Do I "want" them to lose? No.  I also don't think it would be the end of the world to lose a couple conference games.  What I want is for this team to be ready to go when the tourney starts and to make a deep run, preferably finishing what they started last year. I trust JB will have them ready regardless of record before that point.

I'd like to see tremendous, mind-numbing, teeth-chattering, stomach-churning pressure due to crazy expectations from an undefeated regular season that culminates in an undefeated national championship winning run in the tournament.  Is that too much to ask?

I know you are going to get murdered for this thread, but I was actually thinking about this exact thing last night.  Would we be better off if we lost because usually when an elite team loses, they take that as an opportunity to get better.  But then I started to realize this is what BPONE has done to me.  I can't even enjoy a team that has tied for the best record in school history without thinking about losing.  I am going to enjoy the rest of this ride with the BBall team and hope they win every game until the rest of time.

If they can make it through the BIG season and tournament undefeated - I am not worried about the pressure of being undefeated in the NCAA Tourney.  They will have been under the pressure cooker for a while.

By the way - ain't gonna happen.  Our two road games in the BIG have been against Illinois and Northwestern, and both gave us a battle.  The road games in the BIG this year are going to be vicious.

"Want"... no.  I never want Michigan to lose, ever.

They WILL lose a game, perhaps a small handful (4 at the most?).   The Big Ten is tough, and going on the road in the B1G is extra tough.

This team is very good.   Special, fun to watch.   They aren't a "juggernaut".  There are weaknesses.

I just hope for the best.   It would be sweet to see them end the regular season at 29-2 or so.  Go win that BTT again that you own, boys.   Get the #1 seed.  Get to the Final Four.   Try and win it.

As a resident of Madison who will be attending the game against UW in Michigan gear, I would personally like to request that not be a game they lose. I’d also like a pony and the ability to grow a fuller beard if these requests are being read by you know who.

Well, the coach doesn't believe his team will go undefeated but Beilein coaches his team to make sure it does. So there is the dichotomy of expectation versus preparation. You assume the worst and prepare to be the best to over come any obstacle or adversity that threatens your performance.

How many times did Michigan get blown out last year before they turned things around at 19-7 by winning 14 straight before losing to Villanova? And why did they lose as they did before that turnaround and only once since?

I can remember them blowing a big lead to Ohio State in Columbus and then getting their head handed to them by Nebraska in Lincoln.

If you don't shoot well and compound that with mediocre or poor defense, you will lose to any one in the league. If you don't rebound enough missed shots on both ends, if you don't shoot well from the foul line, if you turn the ball over and allow the opposition more scoring chances, you will lose. So, essentially it comes down to managing your team's shooting percentage and limiting the opposition's. So far, in 30 of their last 31 games, Michigan has done all of that to their advantage.

And when you look at a win as just another brick in a bigger wall of success, that brick is only as significant as the next one. And knowing that each game is just another brick in the wall, keeps your perspective from bricking your performance in any given matchup.

The odds are likely that, at some point, we'll drop one and I am fine with a team that gets off to, say, an 18-1, 19-1, or whatever start because, well, that's just awesome.

Do I want them to lose one? Never. It's not like the Pistons where I need them to suck for draft position at this point, or indeed need Tom Gores to sell the damn team because he's a clueless owner.

This is the dumbest mentality. You never want to lose a game. Also, you never think about being undefeated during a game. You solely focus on winning the game you are currently playing if you are worth half a shit in the sport you are playing. I have never had a teammate say a word about remaining undefeated or keeping a win streak going during a game. It's not difficult to not think about that stuff.

I would assume the people who think losing a game is a good thing have never played competitive sports.

No, I don't want them to lose a game. I want the 1976 Indiana team to have to get together towards the end of the season every time Michigan plays to root against them. I want their champagne to stay on ice and never get drunk because this team is as tough as nails and wants to run the table. I want people to stop saying "The 1976 Indiana Hoosiers were the last team to go unbeaten" and start saying "The 2019 Michigan Wolverines were the last team to go unbeaten."

This team has the two necessary ingredients to accomplish this lofty goal: a fantastic defense and versatile offense. When they have a bad game offensively, their defense will keep them in the game. However, they shouldn't ever have a game so bad offensively that their defense needs to bail them out. There are 6 players who can and have put this team on their shoulders and delivered a win. This ain't the early Jordan Bulls, where you employ the Jordan Rules and there's no one else to score. Take away Poole and Iggy will step up. Or Matthews, Teske, Simpson or Livers. That balance allows Coach Beilein to find the weaknesses in our opponents and exploit those matchups. That adds up to 40-0.

Yeah, a loss before the tourney can remedy big heads, wandering focus or a loss of edge or complacency that has set in and get you angry and extra motivated for the stretch if any of that has seeped in.

However, FUCK Bobby Knight in his plaid covered asshole! I still want revenge on that obnoxious bag of dicks team. They beat us 3 fucking times including the NC game, with one game being an indisputable referee rim job and even in the title game the refs changed the complexion that led to the 2nd half blowout....as I remember it without remembering the details anymore, haha. So let's beat their fucking record!

1. Michigan will lose a few games on the road in the Big Ten.  No question.  Probably Indiana and MSU and at least two other random games.

2. There will be no individual game in which any Michigan fan worth his salt will root for the team to lose.

I understand the concept that you're getting at, but your phrasing is a bit clumsy. No one wants the team to lose. If Michigan can somehow pull off the unthinkable and become the first team in the 64-team tourney era to finish the regular season and the postseason undefeated, then that would just be magnificent. But everyone understands that the chances of that happening are vanishingly slim. So what you mean is that if we have to lose a few games, who are we okay with losing to. I would like to win every rivalry game and every game against a ranked team. If we have to lose, then let it be a road game to a random team at the end of a quick swing, like @Iowa on 2/1, @PSU on 2/12, or @Maryland on 3/3. If those are our only three losses, then that would be amazing.

I’d like for some team to beat us and expose any weakness we have so that we can fix it before March.  The pressure associated with going undefeated compounds after each win. I will never root for us to lose, but I would think it would be good for several reasons.

Depends on when the loss occurs. If it's during the regular season, yes I do. If it's during the conference or NCAA tournaments, no I don't.
