I think an often overlooked facet of this whole thing is when OSU had to put their HC on leave, they couldn't promote their top two assistants because they both had their own scandals.  But, sure, ya, you betcha, honesty and character and what not.

At least it looks like the lions are out of the empty pit that is 7-9 8-8 9-7.  Maybe they can use a top draft pick to get some talent on the defense. Maybe not, it is the Lions.

09/10/2018 - 8:55pm Western has a pretty good…

Western has a pretty good interior line too. Keenoy has been starting a long time there.

09/10/2018 - 8:44pm They are running Caldwell's…

They are running Caldwell's offense.  How they kept Cooter around is beyond me. Havent had a good offense since Linehan (sp) left.  He at least let Stafford us his arm down field.  The one thing he is good at.

09/10/2018 - 1:17pm I got Cobb'd too.

I got Cobb'd too.

09/08/2018 - 5:59pm Only beef with the coaching…

Only beef with the coaching is that if they started the young tackles, they would have 2 games of experience and still be sitting at 1-1.

09/08/2018 - 3:25pm Like how they used Mason. …

Like how they used Mason.  Can't forget about him.  He just moves people. I think it was Evan's TD run but he got leverage on  DE or LB and lifted him off the ground.

Ok, fair enough. I just meant that it felt they were changing the offense again.

09/07/2018 - 7:17pm I think the first two years…

I think the first two years Harbaugh ran what he is good at.  Then he recruited a bunch of WRs and brought in Pep to do more a spread passing attack but without the QB to really pull it off. Then Shea comes in and he is trying to change everything again to fit a running QB.

I think we would see the offense improve greatly if he went back to what he knows best. 12 personnel (I think that is what it is called) with the shifts and using the TEs and fullbacks.

Has a younger guy won a position battle or beaten out an older guy since Harbaugh has been at UM? Only one I could think of was Speight in '16

Hawkins showed flashes as a Sophomore that neither safety has showed yet, especially Kinnel.  He closed on that read when he was the single high like a bullet.  I get the feeling that whenever two guys are close that experience wins out over upside.

TW was the RB coach when UM was winning.

09/03/2018 - 11:59am The RB blocking seems to be…

The RB blocking seems to be a little troublesome as pointed out by people who know more than me about football. But that may or may not be coaching. I don't know enough to know.  Either way it doesn't give off a good appearance (having your son on staff).

09/02/2018 - 11:09am After a sleep and some…

After a sleep and some thought.  I don't think the play calling is really as much of an issue as much as the tempo of it.  I think they are trying to use too many formations and have too many discussions about plays. Running guys in and out every play takes time and it is hard to get a rhythm going.  If you want to go jumbo go jumbo. If you want to spread it out then spread it out. But it would be nice to occasionally snap the ball with 10 seconds on the clock as opposed to 1-2 every time.  The pass rush knows when the snap is at that point.

Also, it seems like they make a play then kind of stand around waiting to see what the next formation is going to be before they huddle.  That can't help with getting into the rhymth of the game.

I wish JH would just go back to the complete jumbo look.  The spread experiment hasn't worked great. If they lose at least it would be with an identity.

Loved the way Dylan stepped up in the pocket instead of trying to escape it backwards.

09/02/2018 - 9:23am I agree JH deserves a lot of…

I agree JH deserves a lot of the criticism and it is his offense.  But Pep is on staff and he has to be doing something.  He suggests plays and JH has the final say. Maybe that is why it takes so long to get the play in.  Who knows. But the offense was JHs the first two years too and they didnt look nearly this terrible.  Sure, the OL is bad.  But it is not 'can barely move the ball against Air Force' bad.  And the OL was bad the first two years.  Maybe it is a coincidence but the passing game has been bad since Pep has been at UM.

09/02/2018 - 8:25am "We'll put up a lot more…

"We'll put up a lot more points, but we didn't against this defense. And teams with tackles this bad aren't going to fare well against a defense like ND's (or ours), honestly."

I agree with you on that. It is just frustrating as it always seems other teams can use UMs aggressive DEs against them but UM never can.

I went back and watched the first couple drives.
You were right on the chip on the deep pass attempt to Collins.

I am talking about RB screens where they use the aggressiveness of the defense against them.  Similar to what ND did a few times.  Let the DEs take themselves out of the play.  Not the quick hitters to the WR. Although, those were effective, relatively speaking, without anything really negative.

Evans didnt get any attempts until later.

My beef with the Gentry usage is they didnt use his size. It seemed his targets were more outs or short routes. The endzone target was the only one over the middle I remember and he had a chance to catch it. Probably would have if the ball was higher.

Not really relative to this exact discussion, but I thought Nico Collins looked good. Used his body well on the slant to shield the defender and seemed to really attack the ball.  Hopefully, he gets some more usage moving forward.

Always enjoy your level headed takes.

09/02/2018 - 7:47am Yes.
The OTs were better…

Yes.
The OTs were better but the interior was worse.  FSU is still having free rushers to the QB but they moved the ball.  The difference is now when the line gives good protection nothing comes of it.

UM did nothing last night to help the OTs. No screens, no chips, no swing passes.  The O just hasnt looked good since Pep got here.

Pep's O couldnt move the ball last year against Air Force or Cincy.  Later in the season the only way to move the ball was running it.

Pep has never coordinated a good offense without Luck. I think he keeps getting jobs because he is a good guy who is down to earth with a level head.  But, that doesnt mean he can scheme.

I know it is JH's offense but someone is suggesting plays and there are only so many seconds between plays.

09/02/2018 - 12:20am All you have to do is let…

All you have to do is let the ends rush past the QB then everyone else is in man so you get an easy few yards if you have a mobile qb.

On third down teams are just isolating the slowest LB on a RB or TE bc they know they will be in man.  It did seem Furbush wasnt used much after that first play he got isolated on a TE. Other than the missed tackle on the QB, it seemed Gil played a good game. Hopefully he is used more moving forward.  It will be interesting to see the UFR for some guys on D.

Also, how is Slomon not starting?  He was a starter at the end of the year.

09/01/2018 - 11:57pm I think these are all fair…

I think these are all fair points.  The tackles aren't great.  But, if ND knew they weren't going to throw it deep because the tackles were a problem, then why did it take so long to start rolling Patterson out?  Where are the chips to help Runyan?  Where are the screens to negate the full out rush every play?  UM didn't take advantage of NDs aggressiveness the same way ND did to UM.

Higdon runs a fade on a crucial play late?  No passes to Evans again. Nothing to Gentry in the seem.

ND blitzed every single time they went 5 wide. Why not throw a screen to take advantage of that.  I think the OT argument is an over simplification.  They arent great but there are teams out there putting up more points with worse tackles.

09/01/2018 - 11:33pm I see both sides.  I think…

I see both sides.  I think this is JH's offense, but then the offense didnt look this bad the first two years.

The tackles are bad, but they arent THAT bad.  A lot of teams today put up points with tackles that are worse.

The tackles looked bad in Indy too when pep was there bc everyting was so long developing.  I dont know if that is the case here.  But I dont think the O line was as bad as everyone thought.  There were no seem routes. No quick slants.  Everything ends up with one weird guy in isolation.  LIke the Higdon route at the end.  That never happened before Pep.

Last year with Black prior to injury.  Before that I can't even venture a guess.  Probably Cole if you are talking all positions.

One of the OSU trolls last night cited the recent record vs UM.  Prior to yesterday, that would have bothered me, whether I admitted it or not.  But, last night it didn't illicit the same visceral response.

I just felt bad for the guy/girl.

I think what happened yesterday takes a lot of the "power" out of the wins OSU had/will get. Maybe it is wishful thinking.

43.  What do I win?

08/05/2018 - 11:28pm He knew about the 2009…

Urban knew about the 2009 incident and still brought him on board in 2012.  There is also a lot of smoke regarding the 2009 incident that Urban's close adviser talked to Courtney about dropping charges, but we can ignore that for now and just go with he knew what happened in 2009 based on the charges filed (Zach threw his pregnant wife against the wall).

So Urban gave him a second chance in 2012.  Then Urban admitted he knew about the 2015 incident.  Based on what Urban knew about 2009, simply reporting the 2015 incident to his superior isn't enough.  It may meet his contractual requirements but it comes nowhere near meeting moral requirements.

Any decent human would go above and beyond to find out what happened in 2015.  It wouldn't be hard since his wife had photos and Zach was charged with stalking and had a restraining order issued against him.

Despite all of that, Urban kept him around for three more years and only let him go when it became public knowledge that Urban knew.

OSU knew what they were getting when they hired someone who ran a program with 30 arrests over six years.  They don't get to act shocked now when people question how Urban runs a program.

08/05/2018 - 4:45pm I went back and forth on the…

I went back and forth on the coach.  He is over the top but I also think at that point in a lot of player's careers, they may need that.  If another approach worked, they probably wouldn't be there.

I hope Rakeem Boyd gets some carries this year, he will be fun to watch.

Glad to see that Carlos and the kid from Nevada got scholarships.  Hope they can get their degree.

08/05/2018 - 9:59am He is starting to reel in…

He is starting to reel in some pretty impressive offers.  Virginia offered a few days prior to him committing.

08/04/2018 - 9:00pm If I had to guess I would…

If I had to guess I would say that they move on from him.  I'm probably 70/30.  With each new slow drip of info I think of fewer ways he could make it through.

I think they move on because they know if they don't this will be brought up all the time.  It seems like this is the first time people are actually looking into and talking about how bad his time at FL was.  He got a free pass on the national stage until now, IMO.

08/03/2018 - 1:12pm I agree it seems a little…

I agree it seems a little lopsided at first glance.  Does anyone have any numbers on other rosters? I tried to look over MSU's roster quickly but I don't know which players are walk-ons or scholarship, other than the obvious ones.

First thing that came to my mind on why JH might go this route is he offsets the numbers with the TE group more than most schools.

I understood the lack of going after a lot of WRs last class but hope they can get a couple more this class (they are in on some top guys) since it seems unlikely all four from 2016 complete their eligibility here.

07/31/2018 - 9:59pm If the only loss is to an…

If the only loss is to an undefeated OSU on the road with this schedule, I think they would get in the final four at that point.   There would have to be a few undefeated teams which hasnt happened yet.

07/25/2018 - 12:34pm I also thought it was weird…

I also thought it was weird how he kept saying "I'm going to do what is best for our program."  It was an odd thing to say when being question why he let a guy go.  If it was best for the program he would have done it a long time ago.  But, it is best for the program now because people know. Nothing else.

07/24/2018 - 11:05am Incomplete.

Things would…

Incomplete.

Things would look a lot different if a few close games went the other way. But, they didn't and it is fair to point that out.

I think long term last season will be one of the best things to happen in the JH tenure.  It seems he did a lot of self scouting and made tough changes that will be beneficial moving forward.  This is purely speculation, but I have wondered to myself, if UM beats SC in the bowl if Drevno is still around.  I think JH's decisions with Drevno may have been slightly clouded by friendship.  Maybe not, but that bowl loss all but assured something had to be done. I think the changes to recruiting would have happened regardless and maybe Drevno would have been caught up in those. Either way, moving on from him was needed.

At the end of the day I think the goal is to stock talent and if you have enough talent some seasons will break your way.  I think JH has done that and every team moving forward will have the talent to make the CFP when things break their way.  And some teams will have enough talent to not have to rely on breaks.

07/22/2018 - 11:18pm Great points. The O-line was…

Great points. The O-line was a problem last year but it seemed that things could have been done to get the ball out quicker to help the O-line a little.  The only game I remember that happening was against OSU where the offense moved the ball better than other games.

07/18/2018 - 9:55pm I think the OL shade has…

I think the OL shade has gone a little far at this point. I may be overly optimistic but there is plenty of talent along the line.  Plus, most reports coming out have pointed towards lack of knowing what to do causing hesitation which led to free rushers.  They may not be the best in the game but there is more than enough clay there for a good OL coach to mold into a good unit.

I think Lewerke getting hurt is more likely than Patterson.  You can only run your QB up the middle so much.

07/09/2018 - 12:55pm I think it will be France vs…

I think it will be France vs England, but I am rooting for Belgium vs Croatia.  As long as England doesn't win it all I will be happy.

07/05/2018 - 10:56pm I understand what you're…

I understand what you're saying but even though we as fans won't know JH will have a pretty good idea what he has in waiting after the four current TEs leave.  Also, the four current TEs won't leave all at once. If you start taking much more than four per three you could end up with 7/8 TEs on a roster.

07/05/2018 - 4:53pm I think he is saying two…

I think he is saying two total over the last two years which means he is counting Hayes as an OT.

07/03/2018 - 10:13pm I would imagine he would…

I would imagine he would become a fanboy of OSU maybe UM.  When JH gets things rolling he could act like he got in before it was hip nationally.
