Wasn’t even really on the radar when I thought about good OC choices, but the more I read the more I like!

Did wonders with PSU’s receivers, is supposedly a very good recruiter, has experience at varying levels with Big Time football programs.

POSBANG?

Shore up the new defensive staff openenings, regroup, reload, and hit 2019 running.

Bye Pep?

This looks like a potentially great hire!

WRs coach at Penn State and Co-OC at Bama last season.

Anyone have any detailed knowledge on what precisely his responsibilities were at Bama as a “Co-OC”? Also, any word as to what precisely will be his role here at Michigan? Or has that not been announced yet?

Hopefully this works out like we all hope! Excited about this change!

Hopefully when he gets to Michigan he gets more than a big check and a pair of handcuffs.

I like this on so many levels.  Coming from an elite program.  Coming from top recruiting class year afte year.  WR coach at Bama.... yeah, this is a GRAND SLAM on paper.

I guess this is good?  Im not too familiar with the guy, but sounds like this board is happy which is a nice tune change.

Nuss is still in my head but seems like Josh has a better track record.

Great first step.  I will remain cautiously optimistic about this announcement.  There's still a bunch of information that needs to be release.  Is Pep gone?  Will Harbaugh still be calling the offense by committee?  Does Gattis get full reign at OC?

Can everyone please stop with "he never made the play calls before" stuff.  Obviously he had a significant role in play calling at Bama.  And lets be honest, the play calling here has a lot of room for improvement.  This is such great news...

I know most people don't realize, that most teams, including Alabama, use a calborative approach to play calling.  There is one person that disseminates the input from others tied into the play callers headset and makes the next call.  It's usually the HC or OC.  Obviously, Gatis is part of that collabrative process.  Coming from Alabama, I have little concern that he is up to the task.  If he was coming from University of Buffalo or Cincinatti, maybe a little concern.  But Saban is such a task master, I have litte doubt he will live up to expectations.

This is a good hire and very interesting because we lose 2 defensive coaches and announce an offensive coach first...This has to mean that Pep is either out or becoming only QB coach. In which case Jay would move to LBs?

Also glad to bring in a good recruiter. According to 247 hes a top 25 recruiter in the country (although only 5th best on Bama's staff...they recruit themselves).

With regards to "hes never called plays before": hes coming into a situation where the head coach is an offensive guy. So I think he will be fine, its not like he's being thrown to the wolves with no support. Hiring the young (inexperienced), offensive mind is the new hotness and I'd rather see Michigan get in on that craze in order to infuse new ideas into the offense, as opposed to hiring a 55 year old NFL guy.

So, here's my question: when does Ryan Day consider poaching Gattis, and does this mean that we are paying him more than Mattison got to go to Ohio State? Intrigued minds are intrigued by the potential intrigue at work here, especially in light of the possibility that the Buckeyes would steal Bama's backup qb to go along with the other backup guy that played for the other former nc title team last year.

Feldman saying this is a big move for Harbaugh, and yet Harbaugh has actually gone to the Super Bowl and makes staff changes every year even if most here think otherwise. So, really, how big could this really be, especially when we have no clue if he will be coordinating and not actually play-calling which is apparently the crux of our late-season offensive issues, according to most.

Decent hire, he's been really good as a WRs coach.  Sounds like Saban picked Dan Enos over him and he took a hike.  Never called plays before, so Harbaugh will continue to be the decision maker on play calls.

Not a big flashy hire at all, but could be solid.

I'm excited about this hire. He's a coach who has a proven ability to get a lot out of talented WR's which we have for next year. I would be really excited if I were DPJ, Nico, Tarik Black or any of the WR on the team.

While posters on this thread and others raise legitimate questions of whether Gattis will have full reigns of the offense, I'm excited that Harbaugh is being proactive in strengthening our coaching staff.

Now let's see what happens with the DL and LB coaches that we need to replace.

Who would have dreamed, this board would be so excited to pull a coach from the James Franklin tree.

Should I email coach and suggest he look at Sean Spencer (psu's dline coach) worked with Don Brown at UMass.   He still hasn't replied to my email asking why he doesn't go after Chad Wilt from Army.
