Well its been a committee of coaches calling the plays since Harbaugh came here so its possible that he would suggest plays but not all of his suggestions would make it on the field.  This is my interpretation of how play calling is handled at Michigan.

I place zero faith in Feldman actually knowing what Gattis' role will be in play calling.

From a common sense standpoint, I would find it extremely odd to turn the reigns over to a brand new OC who has never called plays before, and who has been passed over for promotion to OC at two different schools in the last two years.

I could see grooming him to call plays.  I could see loudly announcing he'll call plays, and then really just taking his input the same way Harbaugh has taken input from other offensive staff members over the years.  I'm having a bit of a vision problem making out the image of Gattis being allowed to call whatever play he wants the majority of the time, or even a sizeable minority of the time.

Great recruiter and hopefully (fingers crossed), an innovative young play-caller. Deservedly, Harbaugh has dealt with criticism over the past two years but if he really is relinquishing play-calling duties, then kudos to him for being willing to adapt and step back for the sake of the program.

Gattis is a commodity with WR’s and says play calling. I think this means McDaniels is out. Won’t be part of the staff. Never heard a formal hire on him. Says either Pep stays or a someone new. I see O coaches like this...

Jim harbaugh

Jay Harbaugh- RB’s

Warinner - OL

Moore - TE’s

Gattis - WR/Play calling on game day

Hamilton - QB’s/Coordinator/Asst Coach (involved with Harbaugh/Gattis on plays)

So I think Pep stays and McDaniels is out, especially since we haven’t heard McDaniels hired and Gattis is WR guy.

According to Dan Murphy by way of The Athletic, he will be a co-offensive  coordinator here as well. That would interesting to leave Bama to come to UM for same role especially when you probably would have been sole coordinator at Maryland.

Maybe with Warinner? Maybe that’s how we are keeping him and locking him up? Last year it was Pep/Ed/Jim in decisions. Sounds like it could be Josh/Ed/Jim this time, with Josh calling the plays. Again speculation, but sounds like that could be it. Especially if McDaniels is here and looks like Pep has no spot.

Great track record as a WR coach... unknown as an OC...

a risky hire, but has a great lineage and i think this is preferable than a re-tread...

i sure hope he's going to be given full control of the offense though...presumably that's what he's been promised, but until you see it in action, its hard to say if that is borne out

To be honest, I did not know who Coach Josh Gattis was this morning.  That said, everything I have read about this hire sounds great.  He's a highly regarded recruiter, up and coming Coach from Bama.   I trust Coach Harbaugh, and just the fact PSU thought losing him to Bama was a huge loss for them.  I also think this is a great move for Coach Gattis for many reasons.  Revolutionize the offense, we have some great receivers and QB's.  And for those including myself who did not like seeing Coaches take promotions to go to OSU, we now a lateral transfer move in by an up and coming Coach from Alabama.  I got a good feeling about this after reading up on it this afternoon.  We are going to benefit from his recruiting ability.  Go Blue !!

Something needed to change. Time will tell whether or not this is the change that was needed. Either way, it could be worse. We could've ended the season as the second-worst B1G offense (Rutgers was the worst), kept everyone on staff, and just shuffled their titles. Lol

One or 2 good years and he’s gone, these young offensive coordinators are hot right now for getting head coaching jobs. And if he kills it, he’ll be gone after next year.

Has there ever been a time like this? Where you literally have to start thinking of someone’s replacement if they see any success? It just seems right now our staff has seen so much turnover, not from taking lateral jobs either, guys are getting higher paid positions

No doubt this is a big upgrade. Co offensive coordinator of the 6th best offense in NCAA has to have much for the 49th ranked Wolverines. His receiver coaching experience will be an asset. I expect to see a utilization of an upgraded philosophy. Why bring a coordinator from Sabans crew if you aren't looking to change or at least incorporate a more pro passing scheme?

Great hire. I wonder if Jim has told him yet that DPJ, Tarik Black and Nico Collins can’t be on the field at the same time. Hopefully Harbaugh will be letting go of his play sheet this fall.
