Per Sam: Battle for Dax Hill may not be over

Submitted by ThatGuyCeci on December 11th, 2018 at 1:38 PM

Per Sam Webb last night on TMI and again today on the recruiting roundup, the race for Dax Hill MAY not be over. Sam cautions fans to stop with the accusations of extra benefits, one because it’s indecent, and two because of self-interest (so you’re saying there’s a chance?). So while we are all collectively upset about what went down, all hope is not lost. Sam also mentioned Aubrey Solomon as a precedent. It’s not necessarily the exact same situation, but there are definitely parallels. Take it FWIW.

Until they show up on campus with a student ID, no commit is a commit, for better or worse.

Following recruit announcements is absurd (though I admit it's a guilty pleasure).

What. Ever. To be honest, I’d been getting pretty annoyed with Sam for the last month or so when he was telling all of us why we should want, and even need, OSU to be 10-1 coming into the game and we need them as highly ranked as possible. The guy got his wish, and we got an uber-motivated OSU team with everything to play for, intent on putting on a bloodbath for all the world to see.

The guy is fishing for a story that isn’t there. Hill is gone, and he’s not coming back. Accept it and move on.

Your mad at Sam for wanting a 10-1 Buckeye team?   Probably best to step away from the keyboard for a while.   Sam had zero effect on the outcome of the OSU game.

He didn't say he was coming back.  He's reporting that Michigan is still in pursuit.  If you don't want that news then don't listen.

I've found that most people who say this sort of thing don't actually listen to or read Sam Webb's reporting. They hear about it 3rd or 4th hand, mostly from users on mgoblog who read something he says and say "SAM WEBB SAYS WE COULD GET ..." and that's all they know.

I've found that reading mgouser interpretations of his reports and actually reading his reports are two completely separate experiences. "Alternative facts" if you will.

I just finished up posting about this... Did not hit "post" fortunately. His direct words. "Pump the brakes. Take a pause. It is not over"

Check out the links below for the segments.

I think it is imperative that we following this advice...

DO NOT TWEET AT RECRUITS.

The blog will implode once Harrison signs with OSU. I just hope he decides during the early period. Maizen's burner accounts will troll and pretend they aren't Maizen/Shawn L Martin accounts while the fans who fall back on wins from the 1800s will defend the program's honor. The ultimate internet fight will ensue.

I MIGHT think we have a chance if he had just decommitted, without committing immediately to Alabama.

Can anyone think of any 4* or 5*over the last 20 years, who decommitted from a school, committed to another, and then decommitted again to return to the school they originally committed to?  Guess their has to be a first for anything - but seems like less than .005% chance...

Can you think of anyone that said Fuck Michigan then committed 2 weeks later?  That has to be .00001.

I think that kid from Texas Elliott decommittted then recommited to Texas.

Basically Najee Harris did the same thing in reverse but his committment to Michigan was silent.

Bowl game showing could possibly change his mind.

Home uni's would help for a sharp look IMO. Or the Maize ones if we are the away team.

Sam is just tying to save face. Respect the guy for what he does, but he was misled big time and it's not his fault. But he doesn't need to make it seem like we have hope and he may end up being "right"...

It's BS. Sam's good but he plays games to string out these situations for clicks. That's all it is. Don't fall for it.

That's great news. And even if it doesn't happen with Dax Hill, it is absolutely awesome that Harbaugh has put a marker down (that he is not going anywhere. Ignore those jive turkeys!!) The one other thing I'll say is that people need to quit with the accusations of bagmen, extra benefits, etc. Trust me, it happens at Michigan. Maybe not as much as some places, but this is part of the reality of the landscape for top rated players, especially from families with challenging economic circumstances.

I don't think any extra benefits offered at Michigan even come close to what's dangled at some other places.  Yes, Bama tops the list.  They may not pay top dollar anymore, because on field wins do a lot of talking, but they sure as hell led the game early into Saban's tenure.  I've no doubt Clemson offer's nearly as much as your basic SEC team, also.  I mean, we know Bama, Miss St and LSU lost out on the bidding war for Cam Newton to Auburn.  I'm sure there were others.

How did Auburn not get punished for that, again?

Yeah, spare me the take that Michigan offers the same things.  Some things, yes.  But not nearly on the same scale or precedence...

So if Michigan fans stop badgering an 18 year old kid about his commitment elsewhere then we are sure to get him back!

So...looks like he's going to be Bama then.

Per me:  LOL

I enjoy Sam and he's got a job to do.  Sure there is a chance until the ink is on paper, but it sure seems like the longest of long shots.

Sam's points this morning were:

A. Don't tweet shit to Hill, or any other recruit—it doesn't help Michigan's case.

B. It's not over till it's over with Hill (he played a clip from one of the Rocky movies)

Point A is something every sane Michigan should agree with.

Point B is Sam's natural optimistic, never-say-die attitude at work. He did NOT say Hill was re-committing to us, just that it isn't officially over yet.

Personally I think it's over, but that's what I thought about Solomon, too.

I am aware of that.  I was saying there may be schools within that combined CFB average that are way above average and schools that are way below average.  The way above average schools may have a better percentage than Alabama.  Taking the 2017 NFL Draft class vs the 2013 recruiting class:

2017 NFL Draft

Five-star: 23
Four-star: 76
Three-star: 90
Two-star: 25
NR: 38

2013 Class - 247Sports Composite

Five-star: 35 (65.7%)
Four-star: 330 (23%)
Three-star: 1,790 (5%)
Two-star: 1,720 (1.4%)

65.7% of the 5 stars in the 2013 recruiting class were drafted in the 2017 draft.  I'm sure there were more drafted in the 2016 class as underclassmen and perhaps more in 2018 as 5th year guys.  I'm not sure how exactly these numbers were calculated so these numbers could be a bit misleading.

When you get a ton more 5 stars than any other school, and the percentages of those players making it to the NFL are higher, it's no surprise your numbers may be propped up by the sheer volume of 5 stars they have.

I guess I'm interested to see what Clemson's or FSU's or Michigan's percentage is against the rest of the CFB average (throwing Alabama back into that).

December 11th, 2018 at 6:22 PM ^

Yeah, I kinda thought it would be higher.

I thought that everybody that goes to Alabama gets drafted.

That's why 4-stars with no chance of playing time still choose to sit on the bench at Alabama instead of coming to schools like Michigan.

His Dudeness

December 11th, 2018 at 2:17 PM ^

This is all so very stupid.

To Sam: tell us what you know or let us keep thinking he is gone. To provide us false hope like this and tell us basically nothing other than "don't complain, guys" is a lot to ask and really it does much more harm than good. Had you said nothing about whatever it is that you might know, it would have been much easier on everyone. Doing what you're doing is a lose-lose for everyone involved. I truly believe you are better than this. Please act like it.
