Shaun Crawford Officially Decommits

It's all over the Twitterverse.

Isn't recruiting a blast? Everyday I realize there's so much better stuff I can waste my time on.

It's not about Crawford. My frustration is the process and the 'again' feeling.

Good luck to the young man.

You overreated and completely lost it.

There is a 100% chance that Hoke leaves this program in better shape than Carr left it for Rich Rod or Rich Rod left it for Hoke.

That is fact. Both in quanity an quality.

If any coach took over in 2015, he'd have a VERY solid roster with a great foundation.

Just like Tressel left Fickell with shit because they were in between and having a rebuilding year, Fickell worked through it and of course Meyer inheriited a great team.

You can debate whether or not Hoke is the best coach, but there is no question that this football team has a MUCH better foundation now than it has had since 2007-2008.

You can look up and down the 2015 roster and see quality and potential at all 5 levels of eligibility. And after this year, you'll see experience too.

Geez some of you guys make it sound like our recruiting hass dropped off from the 10s to the 50s.  Guess what losing Hand and McDowell and Harris and such probably precludes UM from winning a NC.  But we are eons away from that anyhow.

There is nothing with the current class of kids (2021s thru 2014s) that stops anyone from competing for Big 10 championships and looking like a realistic rival to MSU And OSU.   Wiscy Stanford and now MSU are recruiting in the 20s - 40s most years and doing well and those 3 teams are playing a very similar in style to what  Hoke preached.  There is no excuse for not performing with BT championships quality with our recruiting.  The players are there - if  the perfromance is not it is due to staff from position coaches on up.   The recruiting is not an issue and will not be eve if UM "Falls" to the 20s some years - that's why you pay coaches in the top nationally.

we're still doing well I'm not arguing that and I agree 100% with what you said.  Maybe I'm still living in the late 90's, but I feel (wish) that Michigan could compete for NC's soon.  You need guys like Hand and McDowell to do that - so that's more of where I'm coming from.  I want to be relevant on the national stage again and the Hand thing just killed me.  He seemed like such a lock - all signs pointed to that.  It was like being 17 - captain of the quiz bowl team and your best friend says the head cheerleader wants to take you prom.  Then, at the last second - she picks Tommy Flanders.  Just such a let down.  Edit: just re-read your response re: NC's... you're on point.

Hoke has had one good year with RR's players.  He has brought in top recruiting classes according to analyst and hasn't gotten much to show for it so far.  On the plus side he did beat the worst OSU team since the 80's and has one win against MSU even though his team has failed to score a TD in two years against them.  He does love the university though I'm not sure he should be the coach of the university he loves.

In my opinion, with this schedule he needs to win at least 9 games and one of them has to be against either OSU or MSU.

but how many  of them played for Carr.  Of those from  Carr's 2007 class only RVB was a four star,  Martin and Koger could have gone elsewhere but recommitted to RR and Henninger was a walk on.

If you want to play that game, BG was an out of shape non descript player under Carr, but became a stud under RR with the help of Barwis.

Really wasn't trying to make this about RR or Carr, but I find it ridiculous to credit all of Hoke's 2011 season to RR's players. A new coach can't retain players if they aren't there in the first place. Look at what Carr at least partially contributed to 2011, vs what RR is contibuting to 2014. Offense - top 5 from Carr in 2011 Molk Hemmingway Koger Huyge McColgan//MealerWatson - top 5 from RR in 2014 Gardner Miller Burzynki ? - am I missing anyone? Defense - top 5 from Carr Martin Van Bergen Henninger Demens Woolfolk - top 5 from RR Ryan Morgan Countess Beyer ? Am I missing anyone?

I've said this before but the number of wins are not that important this year IMO. Development are progress are much more so and how the wins and losses occur.  If the defense is aggressive, the o-line and running game is improving, the team chemistry is good, and there isn't negativity after every game like last year then the record doesn't mean much...within reason.  If they lose 4-5 close games, but still show up and play OSU, ND, MSU, PSU, & NW really close and win a few of them then 4-5 losses won't be a big deal.  If they struggle, don't show progress, eek out ugly wins against the lower half of the league and non-conference opponents, and continue to have more questions than answers then the coaching seat gets hot.  Unless there's a major problem Hoke gets another year.  IMO Hoke will have a great 2015 when he finally has experience, talent, and depth on both sides of the ball.

Sucks, and best of luck to the man.

We lost a 4 star DB. But wait, we have two other 4 star DBs still in the class? Wait, they are both higher rated? Oh yea, 5 star Jabril Peppers is setting foot on campus soon. Dymonte Thomas, Blake Countess, and the rest of the gang haven't transfered and are still here?

This is probably our safest position group for this to happen. We will be fine.

If I recall his parents were asked and confirmed him commit.

The assumption there would  be that his parents wanted him to do it his way and not speak for him.

It's a bummer of course but if he wants to be somewhere else he has to do what he wants. Can't blame him for that.

Tis recruiting.  We win some and we lose some.  Let's just try and get another great young man to wear the maize and blue!!!

There were some murmurs about how this particular decommitment could be a byproduct of the visitation policy of the current coaching staff, but of course ultimately the decision to do or not do such a thing is the pervue of the recruit in question. If he does end up elsewhere, then good luck to him in his career as a collegiae athlete all the same.

Someone is doing some great negative recruiting. Campbell or Harris decommiting doesn't surprise me - I never got the impression they internalized the decision. Crawford seemed like he had internalized the decision. This is a little bit of a surprise but good on the kid. He knew he wanted to explore other options (or more likely someone close to him told him to) and now he's free to do it honestly. I wish him the best of luck and if it's ND we may never play him ever again.

Good riddance is an immature response. Our fan base has a growing tendency to whine and react to negativity more than ever. The fan base's character is flawed. It is represented by the reactions of our fans toward these kids and about these kids. Our true character is measured by how we handle adversity. For most of us, the last decade has been as adverse as we have faced in our lifetimes. Handle it better, please.

Is it me or when we hear about commits looking elsewhere, the more they try to reaffirm their commitment to Michigan the more likely they are to actually decommit? It's like the dreaded vote of confidence thing regarding coaches. If the person in charge just doesn't say anything at all, everything dies done. But when that person screams from the rooftops that everything is status quo that's when the gears start turning.

on how decommits pan out at other schools?  I remember that season with RichRod where we had Kevin Newsome decommit, then we Shavodrick Beaver, then a whole slew of other players.  Did any of them overachieve at the other schools?  I can't think of any.

Good luck in finding the best place for you, young man. I hope it is in Ann Arbor, but if not, I hope it's a great place for you to spend four of the best years of your life.

Didn't this guy just say he was commited to Michigan a few days ago? He should just decommit if he wants to do that instead of telling everybody that he's staying with Michigan and then decommit 24 hours later.

Its best not to pay much attention to the whims of high school juniors. All programs go through decommits and that's the main factor behind me not paying attention except on NSD. Sucks but oh well.

it feels awkward to type... but I support Hoke in this and I like that we stick to our guns as far as visits and commitments.

Sure, this may cost us a player every so often but in the long run a commitment to michigan means something.

Listen, whether or not hoke can actually run a successful program is up in the air.  Personally I just don't think he is smart enough to run a team and unless his coordinators are awesome he is fucked... however, there is no doubt that he is charismatic, inspirational, and chock full of integrity.

I don't wish Crawford good luck any more than I do any other recruit out there:  I don't wish him illwill either; it is best that he attends a school he is comfortable in.

Bobby Bowden made the Hall of Fame by being a folksy "Aw shucks" players coach while his killer assistants handled the tactical day to day stuff.

It actually can be done.  It's up to how well that figurehead recruits and how sharp the assistants are.

This has never been the approach taken at Michigan . . . Yost, Crisler, Bo, etc. were all hands on detail guys.  But we will know by the end of 2015 if it works here or not.

I'd like to see some evidence that Hoke isn't "smart enough" to run a team, considering he seemed smart enough at Ball St., SDSU, and early UM to win.

People hate losing; UM has been losing recently.  All other rationalizations drive me crazy.

SDSU hadn't won a bowl game in 40 years, and those prior wins were lower-division games like the Pineapple and the Camellia. Hoke's first full recruiting class went to four bowls in four years, winning two.

It's true that Hoke's overall record there wasn't spectacular, but the two prior coaches had gone 28-56 and it seems reasonable to give him a pass on year one. I'm not sure how anyone could look at his time there and think he'd been mediocre by SDSU standards unless they have an axe to grind.
