You are correct on the open reduction; however, If it was a closed injury it wouldn't be an open reduction. The only thing that would make it an ORIF is the fact that was open and they would have to debride/irrigate the bony ends and likely use that to their advantage to get a better reduction.

Bone will heal fully in 3 months in a young, healthy, non-smoker, presuming there isn't any infection preventing fracture union. He may have anterior knee pain from the nail insertion site as his only lingering after effect.

11 weeks 2 days ago	There is zero chance he loses	There is zero chance he loses his leg unless someone fucks up the operation or misses a compartment syndrome. He had a mid-shaft low-energy (open?) tibia and fibula fracture. There was no dislocation. Really a straight forward orthopaedic case. If there are any vascular injuries treatment will be timely enough so there are no permanent deficits.
