I beg to differ.

All I know is mgoblog won't like him.

Apparently Herbie already knows who we are going to hire...
“@LongStrider86: any names come to mind for a good fit as michigan's new OC?” I know and so will you very soon. And you'll be pleased

He's current at Stanford.
I've been mentioning his name for OC for 4-5 months now.
I like Wheatley for the RB coach job.

If he runs that system with our line, people will be begging for Borges to come back.
January 8th, 2014 at 8:19 PM ^
He also ads youth which I like and he's an up and coming coach.
Reminds me of Kingsbury a little as he rose through the coaching ranks.
I think anyone with youth is going to play to the strengths of the team because they don't have 20+ years of experience telling them that their way is the right way and their way is the only way.
As I look on the side of the board I see Josh McDaniels' name. I think he's a great example. He had a prostyle offense with NE, then switched to multiple at the end of his tenure, then had it in Denver, then got Tebow and switched to a spread-option, then went back multiple with NE, and now they run a no huddle spread.
One guy, but he's run many offenses based on his personnel.
An old experience guy doesn't do that. He runs his system and his system only.
I think in college, with guys going in and out. You have to be flexible unless that is your identitiy (like Army, Navy, Air Force, Wisconsin, etc.)
Michigan's offense hasn't had an identity in 20 years...and that's okay. But put your players in the best position to win and call plays that are going to display their strengths and limit their weaknesses.
So if the OL sucks. Maybe don't call a stretch run play vs. Penn St. 8 times in 11 players. Maybe don't call a playaction 5 or 7 step drop. Maybe don't call a naked bootleg when the run isn't a threat.
Maybe call screens and short passing plays. Maybe use that to move the ball and then burn the defense on a double move when they over play the short game.

He accepted an OC job to be the next OC at his alma mater, Boise St.
Oh well. Would've loved to have had him!

It will be interesting to see if former USC head coach Lane Kiffin, Chicago Bears wide receivers coach Mike Groh or former Tampa Bay Bucs quarterbacks coach John McNulty, or Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner emerge in Brady Hoke's search for a new offensive coordinator. Groh previously served as the wide receivers coach at Alabama before joining Marc Trestman's staff last off-season.http://coachingsearch.com/coaching-search-ticker
January 8th, 2014 at 8:12 PM ^
Ew.
Has anyone SEEN Tampa Bay's QBs? Freeman was AWFUL and Glennon hasn't been anything either. Uhhh, no thanks!
The other guys don't do anything for me either...maaaaybe Kiffin. At least he has head coaching experience and we basically need a head coach for the offense because Hoke is so defense oriented in the way Rich Rod was with offense. Both needed a head coach on the other side of the ball.
That said, USC players, fans and alums knocked Kiffin for his lack of energy, they said the program was business like and boring and they guys didn't play hard.
So I think I've just talked myself out of that one...yea, I have...no Kiffin.
We need a coach with ENERGY! Someone who compliments the steadiness of Hoke and the experience of Mattison. We need someone that is going to bring excitement, ingenuity, passion and energy to the team and the entire program. We need youth to connect with the players and compliment the great experience that we have.
I don't mind having an OC for 4-5 years and watching him succeed and leave for a HC job somewhere, that's A ok, that's what we need. Not guys that are going to be at Michigan forever.
So no one on that list sounds good, in fact, burn that list.

January 8th, 2014 at 5:33 PM ^
I've played multiple iterations of NCAA and in all of those games, I've managed to lead my offense to scoring 100+ points in multiples games and averaging 50+ points per game. I don't have any bowl victories, but that's only because I end up winning the national championship every year.
I'm a pretty good recruiter too. I've managed to get more 5 stars than 4 stars in most of my classes.

Without a doubt, the best Christmas present I ever received.

Mike DeBord or Dave Brandon.
January 8th, 2014 at 6:12 PM ^
I was wondering if someone would mention DeBord. What's he been doing recently anyhow?
January 8th, 2014 at 6:54 PM ^
He's been our Sport Administrator since February
January 8th, 2014 at 8:50 PM ^
But Rivals actually listed him as an option on their "OC HotBoard". The way the wrote it up almost made me throw up.
DeBord certainly qualifies as a Michigan Man. He has spent three different stints at Michigan, in different capacities: 1993-99 as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator; 2004-07, as special teams coordinator and offensive coordinator; and 20013-present as a sports administrator. DeBord hasn't been in coaching since the end of the 2012 season, but there is a tremendous grondswell of support right now from prominent men of influence.
However, its not him and for that I am thankful.

Dave Schramm
Offensive coordinator and QB coach at Fresno State. Have to love how he developed Carr this year as well as led Fresno to one of the top offenses in the country. Not to mention he develops his quaterbacks pro style.

Phillip Montgomery- Baylor
January 8th, 2014 at 5:42 PM ^
This is not happening. Montgomery has been alongside Brile's side sinch they coached together in high school. They are too close of friends.
January 8th, 2014 at 6:48 PM ^
First thing I did when I looked at OC's was find Baylor's OC. I didn't get to read his bio (cuz I was at work), but Montgomery has been with Briles since they were at Stephenville. I wonder if Montgomery would go with Briles if Briles leaves for the NFL, or takeover at Baylor, or consider other opportunities. The unlikely third case would be the only way I'd say.

What about Clarence McKinney at T A&M or Josh Heupel at Oklahoma
January 8th, 2014 at 6:26 PM ^
If you look at Heupel, don't you have to take a hard look at Mangino? I know he just accepted an OC position at ISU, but if Michigan offered, he may rescind to come here. EDIT: he spent the last couple years as recruitment coordinator for Youngstown State, so he has recruiting ties where we want them.

January 8th, 2014 at 6:52 PM ^
Lashlee is young and would be a very aggressive/out there hire. I just don't see him leaving Auburn. He has strong ties to Malzahn and is still very green as far as cutting his teeth at OC. He was only a grad assistant a couple of years ago. That's not to say he can't do the job. I just think it would be a hard sell. It would probably be difficult for him to leave Gus as well. I think he cuts his teeth there for a couple more years with his mentor, takes a small SWC type job before making a big jump.

I'm not opposed to this at all.
-He's had some HC experience in college and the NFL.
-He's shown he can recruit - when he was recruiting coordinator at USC they did have #1 ranked classes. Counter argument: how much of that was Kiffin, and how much of that was it being USC when they were dominating.
-He's a young Beyonce hire. Counter argument: he was a bit of a douche nozzle, and upset quite a few people. Countering that: I'm pretty sure Hoke would keep him in his place.
-He may have sucked it up as a HC, but he was pretty good as an OC, setting numerous records at USC the two years he was OC.
