Ha

You keep beating me to the punch.

No one said it was the only reason.

But this'll be my last post, because I get the sense you're not to be convinced.

1.  Recruiting advantages only matter if you can scout and project talent.  Taking commits from maxed out 16 year olds, and uncoachable knuckleheads erodes any perceived advantage.

2.  Mack changed the perception of UT, you're correct.  Perceptions, though, are just that--not reality.

3.  No one is saying that Strong didn't have a hand in the current state of the program, Strong most of all.  Watson was a bad hire--system doesn't fit the recruiting base.  More broadly, Strong seems to prefer a pro-set, and that's a crazy thing in a state where every high school runs the spread.  His recent hires indicate he understand this now, and is working to correct it.

4.  Disagree that Florida was a bigger mess.  Muschamp (an excellent coach) had very, very similar problems to what Strong is facing.  He got fired for cleaning it up (and running a stupid pro set offense).  We'll see if Strong suffers the same fate.

Well...

When you make it abundantly clear that no one is going to pass Case McCoy on the depth chart, it makes it hard to keep kids in the program.  And the idea of handing the offense over to Swoopse--who seems like a great kid, but went like 2-7 his senior year in 1-A--is just unbelievable screw up.

I'm sorry, you're wrong on this.

The foundation of the program was rotten--entitled players, poor scouting and development etc.  There's a reason you haven't heard too much chirping about Strong's record (up until recentley, at least).  And that's because everyone who pays attention knew this was a rebuild from the start.

Sounds familiar

...

Damn

beat me to it.

Champs

Champs at the bit. fyi.

"They must become us. We will never become them."

From one of Strong's pressers earlier this year regarding players on thin ice.  I'm a big fan.

There can be no true despair

There can be no true despair without hope.

O-line

He recruits and coaches a heck of an o-line, I'll give him that.  But that's all.

Disagree

Greg Davis acolyte.  Also demonstrates questionable player management skills.  See, running David Ash on QB isos two weeks after a concussion.

Neither Mack Brown

nor DKR were "Texas Men" and they did just fine.  As for politics, that only really helps a coach retain a position when he's underperforming--I'd just assume have a unpolished coach who will either win or gtfo.

I'll take that bet

Texas doesn't need Nick Saban with its resources.  Just a solid X and Os guy with an ability to instill toughness.  Strong is that guy, though any number of other coaches would have also fit the bill.

Teasips

That's something you don't see everyday on a Michigan blog.

I remember

When I got drunk and posted.

I mean,

I think the announcement came after the banquet (last night), and after Saban signed his extension (yetsterday).  The Heisman ceremony is neither here nor there.

Really?

You really think they were trying to steal the thunder from the Heisman ceremony?

I suppose

But I think tennis has some pretty stringent testing proceedures, no?  And Nadal has always been more thickly built than other top players, save maybe Tsonga.

That's a good point

I suppose the US has been without a consisent threat to win a major for so long, I don't have much of a national rooting interest these days, even at the US Open.  I just enjoy the matches for what they are.

Really?

He seems like a pretty good dude, and is a hell of a competitor.  What's to hate?

Can't wait

to hear more about my plant, Tacoplants.

Keep up the awesome work.

Feanor

as in The Silmarillion?  That's awesome, though it seems you're fated for a trip to Bolivia at some point.

Because

The knowledge that you will be letting your teammates down by acting like a knucklehead is the best deterrent there is in a team setting.

I'd rather be rich than stupid.

...

Mark it down

Play action waggle, complete for 3, receiver gets leveled.

He could just make the fundraisers mandatory

And call it a subscription fee.  Would that make you happy?

For me, I'll tolerate the crowd sourcing, and be content knowing that Brian is getting some of that Internet Money, friend.  Wouldn't want MGoBlog to go on strike.

And you spend all day in his threads

bashing him.  Who's worse?

Also, way to call him a liar.

Kyle Prater at NU

It's getting time for NCAA to rule on his eligibility.  Could be that.

.500

Baylor is a 6-6 team this year--they just lost way too much, and their defense is borderline RR-era bad.  Still rooting for Stonum, though.

Trolling hard,

really hard.

Beach house get together, circa 2001

I had a buddy freshman year of college named Will and we happened to be from the same hometown.  His family had a beach house outside of town, and his parents threw a little party, inviting me and my family.

So we all drive down there, and Will's brother, Win, was there with his girlfriend.  Will's mom (who was a space cadet in her own right) kept claiming that Win and this girl were fabulous musicians, and basically begged them to play some of their stuff.  Win was a little too shy, and refused.   I was skeptical anyway, and secretly happy not to be subjected to some amatuer guitar-strumming crap.

A year later I find out that Win is playing SNL with his band, Arcade Fire.  Never can tell, I suppose.

Linebacker

I believe he's only considering schools that are recruiting him at linebacker.  He's been pretty adamant about not playing with his hands down, for what it's worth.

He did indeed

and yes it does.

Don't let the offer list fool you

He's got maybe the best blend of athleticism and passing ability in Texas this year.  Swoopes (#1 QB in Texas) has the higher ceiling, but Barret will be ready to play quicker out of the gate.

Are you saying boo

or Boo-urns?

I'm actually with you on this one

His film reminds me of Devin's more than VY's.  Both are definitely slower than Vince was, and not as dynamic in the open field, but still naturally athletic.  Devin looked better in the passing game than either of them, though.

If anything, it'll be an interesting experiment in how Harsin can adapt his offense to a dual threat qb.  I guess not too much unlike watching the Borges-Denard hybrid offense develop.

...

You actually listen to Whitney Houston? You own a Whitney Houston CD? More than one?

Whitney:

It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

Agreed

I'm not sure I've ever laughed harder on MGoBlog than I did in those threads.  Maybe a couple of the photoshop threads, but still, T. Pryor was delightful.

Irish

Good dude.

Jesuit

Doesn't actually produce that much D-I talent.  If Hoke's going try to establish Texas pipelines, there are better schools to do it at.  Also, this shouldn't be taken as a knock on Gustafson--I love seeing Texas kids head up A2.

Twain...

Does that sweater come in a v-neck?

...

Oh man, look at me.  My name's Trave and I have an opinion.

Baby,

you want me to do what, to your where???

That is

spot on.

Needs more

Judy and Dream of Horses, imo.

This is a kid Mack would probably wait on

There are a couple of kids each year who aren't fungible, and early indications are that Raulerson is that caliber of player.

Raulerson

Kid is a stud, likely a top 10 kid in Texas regardless of position.  UT is recruiting him on O and D, and apparently UT's D line coach told Raulerson he could log snaps on UT's D this year as a rush end if he were on campus.

Still, a little undersized height-wise for a tackle, no?

Funny you say that, actually

Because both Texas and TCU are having banner years recruiting-wise.  I think aTm is doing a really good job of keeping kids w/o UT offers in state, where in the past those kids may have gone to one of the Oklahoma schools, or maybe Tech.

Chris Whaley

Which is not a good thing.  He was the only RB UT took a couple years back, about the same measurables.  He is now, of course, a third string DE.  Running backs just have a hard time when they're that big.
