I understand this one. UGA has almost as much talent as Bama and about similar to UF. Yet Richt couldn't dominate a down SEC east like they should have. I can see UGA saying it's time to move on. Taken rich state with lots of history. Should be a destination job.

It could be huge, but Michigan was already a perfect fit, and he was still favoring the in-state school. That makes me a little cautious as he just may be a prospect who want to stay home despite the Georgia football program's turbulence and uncertainty. Hopefully, this development turns the tide though, and he finally goes with his brain over his heart.

I think Isaac Nauta had planned on enrolling early so this could have huge ramifications for Michigan. That being said, I think Georgia may be the best job available right now, possibly better than USC. I think a lot of coaches would line up for the job, but it seems like this isn't a great year for head coaching candidates so it will be interesting to see who they end up hiring (USC as well).

I don't think it is as clear cut as you make it out to be. There is possibly as deep or deeper pool of prospects in Georgia with Florida also right next door. Add in that the bar for success is pretty low as Georgia has not won the SEC in 10 years, and the SEC East is pretty weak right now. I think there is more pressure to win right away at USC, and USC's schedule is much tougher than Georgia's right now with a 9-game Pac-12 schedule and ND non-conference rivalry. I think it is close though.

I am not alone in this opinion either:

I am with both of you - those are both top 5 jobs IMO.

USC - even with some UCLA rise of late - is knee deep in 5 stars everywhere in the west; they throw themselves at the program and has the blue blood history tradition.  They have a decent division but not like the SEC West.  Or at this point Big 10 East.

UGA - also wonderful tradition if a bit below USC but in terms of footprint you are in the heart of it all and FL and TN are your main competitiors long term so manageable.

These are both up there with Bama and OSU and Texas in the top 5 IMO.  Michigan ND Florida FSU LSU prob in next tier of 5 in some order.

Georgia has three succesful periods in football, Wally Butts ('39-'60) Vince Dooley ('64-'88) and Richt, 2 national titles, 12 SEC titles, 2 heismans, 24 all americans.

USC is a blue blood program, has 11 national titles, 38 Pac 10/12 titles, 7 heismans, 80 all americans.

USC can pretty much get whoever they want out west and recruit nationally. SC is basically LA's football team. Georgia has recruited well, but not as much a national brand compared to SC.

Right now, the 2 programs are pretty close, IMO ceiling is higher at SC.

Late Carr indeed - he is Carr without the NC year.

74% win percentage at Georgia; Carr was 75%.

I bet he considers Miami (assuming that's where Richt goes) being in Florida and all, still not too far away from Georgia and you'd play GT and Clemson in the ACC....but with the year Jake Butt had, with what Harbaugh's doing, the fact that we've been on the kid forever now. I don't see how he couldn't come to Michigan. If he does...he clearly just doesn't want to be here.

I think they should hire Jeff Fisher...but I haven't heard anything either. Kind of weird, but they can wait and go big.

They're doing it right by letting the season end so you don't put a name on the hotseat with his current program and make you deny you before he's ready to think about it.

Kind of like Michigan and Harbaugh.

It sucks for the fans...but it's the right thing to do at a big program. Well, if you want all of the options.

This way you don't have Jimbo Fisher turning you down before you can even offer...*cough* LSU *cough*

Shouldnt USCs first call be to Chip Kelly?  Obv via back channels as he is employed
.

That would be the perfect fit in terms of sex appeal and high level college success.

And while I will get yelled at as Whittingham is never leaving Utah, my 2nd call would be to Whittingham.  He is a Dantonio type who smiles, knows the west coast, develops players, and does more with less.   With USC talent he seems like he could do great things and he is a stable person unlike the last coach or three.

I don't think it's likely, but he couldn't do much better in his audition for the job than to win the PAC-12, which USC has a chance to do this weekend. If Helton pulls that off, I could see Pat Haden convincing himself that what USC needs more than anything else after this period of coaching craziness is stability.

Not really surprised other than it taking this long for it to happen.  A guy at the gym is a huge UGA homer, and his opinion pretty much sums it up:  "Mark Richt is the Tony Romo of college football coaches."

Wow. Can't remember a season with this many openings. Glad Michigan doesn't need to try and find a coach this year. It will be a blood bath.

If they want a dirty coach who wins, gotta think they go after Tressel. I'm not sure what the tattoo parlors and car dealerships are like in Athens though, so might not be a good fit for Jim.

Tressel will not coach at UGA - he loves his job as President of YSU (and more importantly, basically everyone in Youngstown believes he is doing a great job). There are also rumors swirling about him having aspirations to run for governor in Ohio in 2018, a position he definitely could win. Tressel's college coaching career is over, he's moved on.
