Obviously depends on the panel drawn, but broadly speaking the Ninth Circuit is pretty pro-plaintiff in anti-trust cases and class actions, isn't it?
|1 week 6 days ago||Votes||
Every D-1 conference appears to get one vote.
Big Ten rep (MSU President Lou Anna Simon) obviously voted yes. One of the only two no votes came from very recently UM provost (now Dartmouth President and Ivy League representative) Philip Hanlon.

I get it, it's a friendly, but as capitan he has to set an example. Since becoming capitan he has been coasting at a macro level (leaving Spurs for Seattle) and at a micro level (loafing around the field). I'd consider Bradley (obviously the first of the two criticisms applies to him, but the second doesn't) or Howard (anyone who can get away with the yelling he does must have everyone's respect).

That goal probably means more than anything else these three games. To have a shot at getting out of the group we need Altidore with the confidence he had at AZ, not with the confidence that had him looking like a scared puppy by the end of this year.

Getting a Stanley Cup champion, two-time President's Trophy winner, two-time gold medalist to give that all up to coach in a college system that >2/3 of NHL players skip would be so unprecedented that I can't believe it's a real possiblity.
Assuming this won't be happeneing, what about that guy at Union? They had sucked since the begining of time when he got there (like never-won-an-ECAC-playoff-series-in-history level sucked) and now they are National Champs. All with really serious resource restrictions.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||Unverified Voracity||
Not sure this is actually true, but it seems truthy, but someone from my high school played at Union a few years back and I seem to recall that when he was there (~5 years ago) they had never won an ECAC postseason series ever since joining D-I. The change there is unbelievable.
On another note they have ONE NHL draft pick which adds to the amazingness of their rise.

Don't think this means McGary is staying. Horford has always been someone for whom basketball is not number one. He's graduating, he wants to move on with his life, and if he had independent plans to go to graduate school somewhere else, I imagine he would go play there.

I really respect Duke and Coach K and usually pull for them *ducks*. But damn if Mercer wins we would have exactly one game in which we weren't overwhelming favorites in order to get to the Final Four. /thingsthatareirrelevantbecausedukewillwinby100

That's because those teams are good and teams that are good usually win. You could probably randomly seed FA Cup style and get almost all the champions out of the top 12 ranked teams.

Is GRIII really a risk to go? He's been terrible. Would he really be a first rounder on the strength of his measurables?
PS oh look a garbage charging call.

My biggest worry going into the tournament is that three-dependent teams can get upset easily if they miss said threes. Beating a a team about the quality of the one we will play in the first round while shooting 20% from three goes a long way toward making me less worried about the tournament worst-cast-scenario.

I'm a grad student at Harvard and vaguely follow Harvard basketball. My understanding is that around the time Amaker was hired the administration started to relax their admissions standards for basketball players. They are still around the same as the rest of the Ivy League, but they used to be higher. It might be worth noting the hockey program has really gone downhill in the same period perhaps becase the university has used more marginal admits on basketball rather than hockey. Also I think you are right to finger the increase in financial aid since the Ivy League doesn't do athletic scholarships.
There is a lot more talent (more accurately AAU/other opportunities for talent development) than there was 30 years ago, so all of mid-major college basketball is getting more competitive. There used to only be enough talent to fill Penn/Princeton with legit D-I players.
Finally I think Amaker is a pretty good coach. He had success at Seton Hall, and his recruiting at UM was quite good considering the hole we were in from sanctions/Ellerbe.
|23 weeks 6 days ago||Honestly, I'd rather have it||
Honestly, I'd rather have it say "Go Blue" -- at least that's identifiable with the school. Michigan is probably more disassociated from their nickname than any team in North America. UM is probably the third thing that comes to my mind when I hear "Wolverines." After X-men and the zoo.
Why spend all this effort building a brand and then market something completely disassociated from that brand?

I don't know -- there have been several open threes missed and several layups. The offense is creating lools. The defense blows though.

Looks like: win - 3; so win - 2; so loss - 1; loss - 0.
FWIW this system makes a ton more sense to me than the NHL system which hugely incentivizes being hugely defensive at the end of regulation in a tie.

Wrong. Scottsdale is near Tempe not UofA. Obviously it's Todd Graham for QB coach. He is out of texting for the month though, so he hasn't told anyone at ASU.

|32 weeks 6 hours ago||Now we have it looks like||
Now we have it looks like best in the business OCs and DCs (yes I'm aware the defense was medicore this year but Mattison has one of the best resumes in CFB). If this frees Brady Hoke to be a people manager, recruiter, and outside contact (all of which he is, undeniably, very good at), I am optimistic.

If it were Cam Cameron that would be a pretty interesting dynamic. Both and OC and a DC with resumes way superior to the HC's.

Surprised no one has mentioned Mike Bloomgren (http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=208167701). A Stanford alumna friend was bitching about his play calling last night, but they have been quite sucessful running the Brady-Hoke-wet-dream-offense. You'd probably have to back up a Brinks truck to his house to make it happen, since Stanford is better than us right now and he has no M ties.

|32 weeks 4 days ago||So NDSU with the current||
So NDSU with the current roster would be bowl eligible in the FBS, easily (I think Sargin has them 40-something in all of D-1). They haven't lost a game in more than two full regular seasons; they could have lost this one and still been, honestly, the best FCS team by a ways. I know from Appalachian State who was in the same place a few years back (when they definitely DIDN'T play Michigan) that this kind of dominance doesn't always last, but if you are NDSU's AD are you at least exploring going up? They'd be immediately competing for conference titles in the weaker FBS conferences even without the recruiting bump they'd get, and there seems little left for them to do at the FCS level (seriously at some point does going undefeated get old?).

How many people are QB coaches at BCS schools at 25? (25!) Even after getting fired he still seems ten years ahead on the career track. Most people are GAing at his age or position coaching HS JV.
|32 weeks 5 days ago||Seems like a pretty good||
Seems like a pretty good hire, but I can't say it wows me. He's a good coach, for sure, but there are thirty programs that would be a step up from UL. Texas is supposed to be sui generis and be able to get anyone they want. I'd imagine being rejectect by coaches from Baylor and UCLA is going to stick in the craw of a lot of UT fans.
