Still a B1G (big) college hockey game tonight

Submitted by crg on March 10th, 2024 at 5:28 PM

Although Michigan doesn't play tonight (SINCE WE SWEPT THE FIG THINGS LAST NIGHT, ENDING THEIR SEASON AND PUTTING US INTO THE SEMIFINALS OF THE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT... for those unaware), there *is* a meaningful game tonight.

Wisconsin hosts osu for Game 3 of their quarterfinals. If wisc wins, Michigan plays msu next weekend in a single elimination playoff game @ East Lansing.  If osu wins, we have to go to Minnesota for the same.

The game is on BTN+ at 6pm.

Let's cheer for wisc to end osu's season.

Not rooting for the Trohls.  I don't really care who wins.  Not sure whether we're better off going against FYS or taking a trip to 3M.  I don't think it really matters.

Oops, went to watch, after logging into btn+ I realized I had gone on the cheap and only bought the Michigan-specific package.  Doh!

I guess I’m rooting for Wisconsin as I’m betting the players want a chance for some MSU revenge.

  • To win the B1G, I don't think it matters
    • MSU then Wiscy or Minny, vs
    • Minny then MSU or OSU (probably MSU)
  • To minimize scenarios in which Mich doesn't make the NCAAs
    • OSU would be 2 wins away from being a bid thief
      • Maybe a 10-15% likelihood should OSU win tonight
      • Still better to squash that tonight, IMO
    • I think Mich is unlikely to fall further than 13th in the event of a loss next weekend (I'm not a pairwise expert)
      • #11 Colorado College plays #11 Omaha (NCHC)
      • #13 Western Michigan plays #15 St Cloud (NCHC)
      • #14 Providence plays #15 Massachusetts (Hockey East)

Pairwise predictor moves Michigan to 99.4% as of this morning's 20,000 simulations, which isn't a lock, but certainly feels much better than it did three weeks ago.

I'll be curious to see what tomorrow's numbers say since it will now simulate Michigan/Minnesota instead of Michigan/MSU or Michigan/Minnesota.

Right now the cutoff line is 14, the only way UM could be out is if they lose to Minn and every conference has an upset. So say OSU wins their tourney, and there are upsets in the ECAC, HE, and NCHC, the cutoff be at 11, where UM could be if they lose. I don't know if it will reach 100% tomorrow, but it would be great if it does.

99.6% :)

Final M Pairwise Ranking Likelihoods:

  8    0.1%
  9       1%
10     23%
11     31%
12     32%
13     12%
14       1%
15    <0.05%

Likelihoods of winning the B1G Tournament

  • OSU   6% (bid thief)
  • Mich 19%
  • MSU 37%
  • Minn 38%

The Atlantic Hockey and CCHA champions will be bid thieves since they are sure to come from below 16.  I'm guessing the 0.4% chance of missing the NCAAs is distributed as

  • mostly from falling to 14th and one bid thief arising from the B1G, Hockey East, NCHC, or ECAC
  • a small contribution from falling to 13th and two bid thieves arising from the B1G, Hockey East, NCHC, and ECAC
  • an even smaller contribution from falling to 15th and out for sure

I guess I don't need to figure out if I can get a ticket for the game at East Landfill on Saturday.  Probably rooting for OSU because an OSU win would give us another game at Yost if we could beat Minnesota.  We are at 9:00 on BTN.

Would've liked if Michigan played Minnesota before the OSU-MSU game, as that would direct my rooting interest in the second contest (OSU if Michigan wins, MSU if Minnesota wins - to avoid any bid stealing).

I get why it's later though - central time zone game vs eastern time zone game.

Another reason our chances look so good now is that each of the 6 teams ranked from 11-16 plays one of the others this weekend. Should take at least a few of our competitors off the board.
