Would've liked to play…

Would've liked if Michigan played Minnesota before the OSU-MSU game, as that would direct my rooting interest in the second contest (OSU if Michigan wins, MSU if Minnesota wins - to avoid any bid stealing).

I get why it's later though - central time zone game vs eastern time zone game.

Still want to see an offense…

Still want to see an offense UFR from Brian on the Iowa game.  That was ugly.

Might as well do it from the…

Might as well do it from the 'get go'; probably going to end up getting there anyway.

Technical note - but don't…

Technical note - but don't necessarily have to beat Iowa State for that to happen.  The other teams they play; if it was last year's Iowa (but this year's opponents), they could beat.

"Much worse is a 13-0 major…

"Much worse is a 13-0 major conference champ who beat 2 SEC teams being left out because their QB got injured."

Absolutely!!

I think this is going to go…

I think this is going to go to 16 teams when the CFP sees some of the TV ratings (and ticket sales) from those first round games the next few seasons...meaningful December games are much more appealing than two non-power conference teams playing each other in a bowl game, with some of their best players sitting out.

Have to disagree, since the…

Have to disagree, since the 5th team will likely be from a non-power 4 conference.  So, if (for example)  #15 Kansas State beats #2 Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game, they are still likely to be ahead of #19 Memphis, who was the highest rated non-power conference champ.

Au contraire, mi amigo; even…

Au contraire, mi amigo; even without divisions, when Iowa parlays their weak 2024 conference schedule into two 2-0 wins, a 3-2 win, and an 8-1 conference record, and second place in the B1G (no, I don't really think it will happen, but I digress), their conference championship game loss will not necessarily result in a top 12 finish...

Seriously, it will be a lot harder to keep the CCG runner-up out of the playoff going forward...

How long until the B1G (NFC)…

How long until the B1G (NFC) and SEC (AFC) are all that's left and they form the PCFL (Professional College Football League)?

Athletes are employed, there is a salary cap, and it's the defacto Minor League for the NFL.  Education is also available, if desired.

Ok, Brian.  Convenient that you've skipped over the Iowa game. ;p

Can't blame you for wanting to watch the Rose Bowl again, though.

Also concerned if Minter leaves.  It was the 'Baltimore Defense' that ultimately pushed Harbaugh over the top at Michigan.

Been wondering this myself. …

Been wondering this myself.  Hard to know; Michigan does have the advantage of its history, but also has some of the same high academic standards, and has been seemingly slower to adapt.

On a hot day in the SEC…

On a hot day in the SEC there's a drive in the late 3rd Q when Saban always likes to go after the nose tackle and see if he's holding up. It's 55 in Pasadena, however, and SoCal native Mason Graham(+1) rolls with the double until his LB shows up, the arms the LG off of him, and makes the tackle for a short gain. This has been Saban Wastes a Drive Trying Mason Graham. Tune in Next Week when the next Alabama HC tries the same thing.

Amusing, and good insight!

3 min 1st Q. Punter leaves…

3 min 1st Q. Punter leaves his leg out and draws contact but Refs+2 think he had ample time to get that thing down.

Could be wrong, and if he was actually hurt, my apologies - but the punter went down after this, and I thought I was watching a soccer match where the player is supposedly in agony, gets carried off on a stretcher, only to be running around on the sidelines right after.

Noticed the punter was back out there next time around too...

I don't think they have…

I don't think they have rights to the CFP games.  Don't even see those in former seasons.

Had to endure almost the…

Had to endure almost the entirety of Brett Favre's career, followed by all of Aaron Rodgers time starting at Green Bay. The year after Rodgers departs Green Bay breaks the long drought.

Brings up an interesting…

Brings up an interesting question for next year.  Will the CFP winning teams that have to play in mid-December have an advantage over the ones who won their conference championship games, and have a month off?

You are correct, for a five…

You are correct, for a five year period.  But it does work equally over a 10 year period:

1    ABC    DEF
2    ABD    CEF
3    ABE    CDF
4    ABF    CDE
5    ACD    BEF
6    ACE    BDF
7    ACF    BDE
8    ADE    BCF
9    ADF    BCE
10    AEF    BCD

With each school (outside of its rivalry pod) playing every other school twice home and twice away in a 10 year period.

Simple solution: rotating…

Simple solution: rotating divisions. Six divisions of three teams each (permanent rivals).

So for example, you have Pod A, B, C, D, E, and F. Put three together in divisions each year.

Year 1: A, B, C  Year 2: A, D, E  Year 3: A, F, B  Year 4: A, C, D Year 5 A, E, F...etc for 10 years (see further down the thread for the full 10 years), then start over.  Every team will play every other (non-rival) twice home and twice away in the 10 year period.

Only games for each division is against all other division opponents that year (8 conf games). That helps with fairness of schedule.

Two division winners play each other in the championship, and you never play your permanent rivals in the championship game.

Well, actually they might. …

Well, actually they might.  In the initial format, when the Pac-12 still existed, the CFP said it would be the "top 6 conference champions", plus 6 other teams.  Top 6 would mean Power 5 (which at the time included the Pac-12) plus one group of five team.

Thinking of it in basketball terms, it provides the opportunity for a David/Goliath scenario.

Good note thanks; next year…

Not sure, given the increasing schedule difficulty within the conference, what motivation there would be to schedule another Power 5 non-conference game in future seasons...

During the game, I noticed…

During the game, I noticed JJ slipped at least two different times on the field surface in Indianapolis.  Hope Michigan gets a chance to actually practice a few times on the Rose Bowl field ahead of the game, but don't know...guessing the sod there will create different footing that Michigan's stadium or practice field. Choose the right shoe type.  (FWIW - Alabama plays their home games on Bermuda Grass)

Two thoughts:

1. How nice of the B1G to schedule this five year's out...we know for sure that no changes will be made to the current 18 teams...

2. I await Urban Meyer's criticism of Ohio State's comparatively cupcake schedule in 2024 vs Michigan's, where Michigan plays USC, Oregon, Washington and Texas, while Ohio State plays Oregon and Penn State (with non-conf. games against Southern Miss, Western Michigan and Marshall).

I hope they're ok making a…

Seth - glad you mentioned other running plays that could potentially work, because if it just meant using the pass game to beat this type of defense, Saturday's weather projection threatens to cause havoc with that (hot and very windy, with a decent chance of rain)...

With the addition of 4 Big 12 Teams, who are each guaranteed $31+M/year, does that make the Big 12 deal closer to $500M annually?

Nice, simple picture of why what's going on, is going on.

In those years, really going to cost to see all the non-regular season games, in person, of a Michigan Championship team (in the new CFP model):

-Vegas: B1G Championship

-Potential away game (Campus site): First Round (might be home game, or bye)

-Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona or California: Quarterfinal

-Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona or California: Semifinal

-Unknown, but the three so far are Houston, Vegas and Miami: Championship

Update (maybe, I can't tell what's the latest):

Brett McMurphy of the Action Network reported the Pac-12 was unable to get the Grant of Rights signed during Friday's meeting and "nothing has changed" as far as Oregon and Washington potentially joining the Big Ten with a move "expected" when the details are worked out.

If I was correct in my quick search, 2025 will be the first time since 1937 that Michigan has the same number of home games and away games in the same season.  Every season since 1937 has more games at Michigan than at its opponents.

That can't be possible.  I…

That can't be possible.  ;)    I mean, there are no out of conference Power 5 opponents again this year, right?  https://thespun.com/more/top-stories/look-michigan-is-getting-criticized-for-its-weak-schedule

Seth - I know you mentioned…

Seth - I know you mentioned divisions being optional, but have you thought about this model, with a nine game conference schedule?

Four pods of four, rotate pods in divisions each year (i.e. Pod A&B in year 1, A&C in year 2, and A&D in year 3, then begin again), so you still have a true championship game - and make sure seven of the nine games are against the teams in your division. That'd be more fun than taking the top two teams in a 16 team conference, especially if the schedules are dramatically imbalanced (remember - you're not playing 6 of the 15 other teams each year).

A bonus, is that, if the B1G truly balances the scheduling (which this arrangement allows for; sticks tongue out at TV networks), you would play each non-pod team an average of once every other year, which keeps conference opponents from disappearing from view for years at a time.

Other road games this year:

Other road games this year:

  • 9/30 Nebraska
  • 10/7 Minnesota
  • 10/21 Michigan State
  • 11/18 Maryland

Which one(s) do you think is (are) most likely to be at night?  Personally, I'm thinking NBC might like Nebraska and/or Michigan State.  Minnesota is possible too.  Maryland not as likely (but still possible).  Wonder if there is still a night game limit per team in the new TV contracts?
