UM BBall lucked out of two technical FTs yesterday
Happy Monday y'all! Huge wins yesterday against the Suckeyes; I've rewatched game highlights of the mens' triumph in Columbus twice already! However, I came across something interesting about the game in the twitters this morning.
Per Brendan Quinn of the Athletic, there were two instances in which it appeared UM coaches/staff were using cell phones on the bench during the game. It has been confirmed that one instance was the DOBO taking call(s) about the teams' post-game food. The other (alleged) incident was a clip that showed Coach Howard seemingly pulling out what appeared to be a phone from his back pocket. Although, it has been confirmed that the latter instance was just Coach Howard pulling out a laminated notecard/playsheet.
Per NCAA rules, OSU should have been awarded Technical Foul shots due to the single instance of a UM coach/staff using an electronic device on the bench during the game. So even though the refs were cooking Wolverine flesh and serving it to OSU in an and-one dish most of the afternoon, it seems as though they missed this infraction and it helped us out.
Here is a link to the entire twitter thread by Brendan: https://twitter.com/BFQuinn/status/1363621088874426369. I tried to link the individual tweets in the summary explanation for the official word.

Replying to this because it needs to be toward the top.
Even if Quinn corrected himself later in that Juwan pulled a call sheet from his pocket. Either way Quinn can fuck himself for jumping to conclusions. You know damn well he wouldn't do that to precious Izzo.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:17 AM ^
Is the vitriol here deserved? I wasn't aware of Quinn's predisposition toward Izzo and against UM. It seems like he has treated UM fairly. Perhaps I've missed some of his commentaries.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:27 AM ^
No, it's not deserved. Quinn is very fair and balanced - his podcast with Dylan from UMHoops (Moving Screen) is the best B1G podcast out there, by far. It's a must listen.

Quinn's a good writer overall. But he jumped the gun on this one and it's a bad look for him. He should at least delete his original tweet.
February 22nd, 2021 at 3:48 PM ^
To each his own, but I have stopped listening to the Moving screen. Seemed a waste of time to me. Quinn always came across as if he had just rolled out of bed and put zero prep into the subject matter. Dylan was just the opposite. I envisioned him sitting behind 3 computer screens and volumes of printed charts and stats on his table top, just waiting to bedazzle us with a never ending stream of statistics. Maybe it has improved since I quite listening.
i prefer the style of Matt from Endless Motor.

Yeah I don't really get it. Haven't read much of his stuff, I only listen to the Moving Screen pod and he seems fine.

He absolutely loves Izzo. It’s killing him that MSU is awful this year so he has to make up some BS conspiracy about Michigan and pass it off as fact before even getting confirmation.
February 22nd, 2021 at 12:29 PM ^
definately the first; less so the latter. Brandon loves himself some Izzo.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:27 AM ^
I watched parts of State vs Indiana. Izzy was on 2-3 feet onto the court while play was on their side, refs just ignored it as the announcers made fun of it, calling him the extra man on the court. That is a way bigger deal.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:30 AM ^
Miller was also on the court near the end of that game.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:44 AM ^
I think Dakich was calling him out on it too. How it constricts the court and creates vision issues, because there's a sense of someone's there.
"nice you can get away with it"
February 22nd, 2021 at 12:51 PM ^
Brendan Quinn is as neutral as it gets. When he first started the MSU beat after having covered Michigan for several years, Izzo actually accused him of being a Michigan homer. If you have ever read his work recently, it's clear that he loves covering this Michigan team. Relax.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:37 AM ^
Going to be pretty hard for 3 refs to watch the game and the benches.
Although the 3 yesterday weren't watching the court so maybe.
This is like people on their couches calling rules infractions on golfers based on tv angles.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:37 AM ^
Who cares? If the refs make the zillion other calls the way they should have, I would gladly give them the technical.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:53 AM ^
There was no technical violation. Juwan wasn't on a phone and the guy who was (Hunter) isn't a coach.
February 22nd, 2021 at 12:55 PM ^
This isn't actually accurate. He is considered part of the bench personnel.
That said, it wasn't used for coaching purposes and so the end point still stands that it did not deserve a technical foul.

True, there were many bad/inconsistent calls made yesterday, but this one bothers me most. Tied game, 0:39 left in the 1st half, and Carstensen makes this charging call when Young was CLEARLY in the restricted area. What the Fuck?!?
February 22nd, 2021 at 1:36 PM ^
This was an atrocious call but not for the reasons you suggest. The restricted circle is only for secondary defenders, i.e., not for an on-ball defender. An on-ball defender can be "charged into" even if in the restricted area, i.e., there can be an offensive foul.
This wasn't, but it could be.
February 22nd, 2021 at 1:57 PM ^
It's hard to figure out what he was actually calling, though? Was it Dickinson rooting the guy out with his elbow on the second bump? If so, whew.....
February 22nd, 2021 at 2:09 PM ^
Yes, it was for the elbow.
February 22nd, 2021 at 3:01 PM ^
Not sure why you were negged. It was absurdly called for the elbow, I guess. Again, terrible call; it just had nothing to do with the restricted area.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:38 AM ^
Who gives a fuck, Brendan Quinn is a tool. If you’re any type of journalist you should wait for the facts before speaking especially in the Howard case, every game he pulls that out of his pocket
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:39 AM ^
Boo hoo. Go Blue!!
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:40 AM ^
I expect a 300-comment Eleven Warriors post on this conspiracy in due time
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:05 AM ^
Spoiler: they were using those cell phones to order pizzas from Comet Ping Pong.
February 22nd, 2021 at 12:18 PM ^
#Howardgate!
February 22nd, 2021 at 12:41 PM ^
I was just about to post..::shouldn't this be on 11 warriors
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:40 AM ^
You put a whole lot of work into this pointless post.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:24 AM ^
I'll pile on and say I downvoted the OP for the use of "Suckeyes". We should be better than that.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:33 AM ^
Kissing cousin of ‘scUM’ and Xichigan
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:49 AM ^
IDK, I did not correct my third grader during the game when he called them Ohio Stink.
Pretty sure he could already match up nicely against a significant percentage of their applicant pool.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:55 AM ^
a child calling them ohio stink is adorable. an adult calling them suckeyes is juvenile.
February 22nd, 2021 at 1:36 PM ^
I think 40 year olds chanting you suck when the other team has to punt is awesome too.
February 22nd, 2021 at 1:44 PM ^
That nailed it for me as well. Immediately scrolled up to downvote.
February 22nd, 2021 at 2:43 PM ^
Yep, does not belong in an OP. Spelled out as well in the guidelines.
February 22nd, 2021 at 5:28 PM ^
-1 for “Y’all”
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:41 AM ^
Read that wrong, never mind.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:42 AM ^
It’s come out that phone guy was taking a call about post game meals for the team and Coach Howard was looking at a pocket play sheet. This is a non-starter.
OSU got their asses handed to them on their own floor, all while getting ref home cooking. Let that feeling rush over your bodies Buckeyes, because it’s about. fuckin’. time.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:47 AM ^
Except they didn't luck out because Chris Hunter is the Director of Basketball Operations, not a coach who was dealing with logistics, thus NOT a violation. Also Juwan was using a laminated play sheet that "looked" like a phone because the video posted was taken by a potato. CAN WE STOP POSTING THIS NON-NEWS? Jesus.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:51 AM ^
I’m not sure this was meant for me but, thanks for reiterating.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:06 AM ^
It wasn't at all, I agree with you completely, I'm fired up at how long this dumb story has run
February 22nd, 2021 at 3:53 PM ^
Not sure refs distinguish between adults on the sideline -- who's a coach and who's not. I'm sure Hunter will be advised not to take calls on the sideline going forward.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:42 AM ^
What qualifies as "on the bench"? Maybe they didn't get teed up because he wasn't sitting on the court with the other coaches.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:46 AM ^
He’s not a coach, he is DOBO Chris Hunter
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:05 AM ^
Not to be confused with Abobo from Double Dragon games.
February 22nd, 2021 at 11:14 AM ^
But he definitely ordered some chicken for the team with Adobo seasoning.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:43 AM ^
Ohio State was lucky that sterling referring crew saw our defenders push off against the OSU players' arms with their stationary bellies.
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:44 AM ^
And OSU "lucked out" on every other call
February 22nd, 2021 at 10:46 AM ^
Negged for bullshit title.
