Will You Be Rooting For Purdue to Win the National Championship?

Submitted by FlaWolverine22 on April 6th, 2024 at 9:29 PM

With Purdue officially in the title game and awaiting the winner of UConn/Alabama, will you be rooting for or against Purdue to win the first NCAAM National Championship for the Big Ten since 2000?

I’ll be rooting against them because I’ll never forgive the big ten for what they did to us and Purdue was one of the ringleaders.

I like Matt Painter so I'll be rooting for them; Ryan Walters and Purdue football are such an afterthought that it's hard to really care about whatever BS he made up to justify why he got worked over by Michigan.

But honestly, both UConn (I assume they beat Alabama as they're leading now) and Purdue seem like good teams with stylistic differences that'll make for a fun game.

  1. I don't "root" for any team other than Michigan. Period, full stop. I have no rooting interest in the final championship game.
  2. Having said that, I would rather see Purdue win than UConn. I like Zach Edey, and Matt Painter. I don't want to see UConn win again. And in the unlikely event that Bama beats UConn, I definitely don't want them to win.
  3. In terms of favorite teams, I have one favorite:  Michigan. I have two teams I really don't want to see win in anything:  OSU and MSU. (PSU and ND are up there, but not as bad as OSU and MSU.) Other than that, I don't want to see SEC wins in football, and don't want to see UConn, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, and North Carolina win in basketball. So in a championship game that includes one of the five above teams, plus OSU and MSU, I would "prefer" whoever is playing them to win. Big 10 or not.

I was going to cheer for Purdue, but then OP reminded of how Purdue sided with the schools that dragged our name through the mud and tried to de-rail our season during Stallions-gate.

Nuts to the rest of the Big Ten. We should leave this conference or get proportional revenue for football.

My favorite uncle is a Purdue grad, plus my cousin (his son) is a Boilermaker, plus my brother was a prof at Purdue, so Boiler up.

I will be cheering for Purdue, as well as the Iowa ladies too.

It would have been nice to see the UConn women in the finals too, but I guess Caitlin Clark has a date with destiny.

GLT all four teams!!!

(Hope the Petiti dilk isn't at either final, but he will probably be at both.)

No. Go Huskies.

But that is because I’m a longtime UConn basketball fan (I grew up there).

It is the only other team I root for aside from Michigan.

I have a master’s from there, and despite their regrettable contribution to the sign stupidity, as well as the lack of medical facilities for our football players, I know it’s a great place, with a lot of great people.

Especially when the Bacardi girls dance topless on the bar at Harry’s.  (True story).

So yes.  I will be pulling hard for my 2nd alma mater.  Purdue deserves a championship as much as anyone, and If we win, and if we (Michigan) pull it off in the NCAA hockey championship, it’ll be a trifecta for me.

Boiler Up!

Painter is a contemporary of mine and I’m a fan. Hope they do well.

And this is MBB. FB coach can eat a bag of Ds for his role in things.

Football and basketball are two different worlds and I like Matt Painter.  A good friend of mine went to Purdue, they are B1G and it would be great for the B1G to win national championships in football and basketball in the same season.  I will be supporting Purdue on Monday night but UConn is really good.  If Purdue wins then they would've certainly earned every bit of it.  Besides, Purdue has been embarrassed the past few years as a high seed getting beat by a low seed.  They really need this one.

All-in for Purdue. Matt Painter is a class act. Full stop. Ryan Walters is a Colorado "grad" under Gary Barnett - please STOP hating Purdue hoops because of a dickhead CFB coach who will be fired after two more 4-8 seasons.

Yeah remember when Purdue piped up and supported Michigan amongst the maelstrom last fall, just like the excellent medical care they provided Speight in '17 in West Lafayette?

Painter is a good guy and a really good coach, I don't care, I hope they lose just like every other athletic program in this supposed conference.

I derive absolutely no joy whatsoever from another conference foe's success and it benefits Michigan in no way, so nah, I'm fine with UConn winning again and will eagerly await the Frozen Four and the Spring Game.

Eh. We got caught cheating, whether or not we profited much from it, and I'm not surprised other Big Ten coaches were pissed about it. We served our penalty and moved on. Seems to me like those continuing to whine about it are making a mountain out of a molehill. We won the National Championship, so who cares what the Purdue head football coach thought, or thinks?

They also hope we lose every game, because of course they do — same way I hope OSU does. Doesn't make them assholes.

Anyway, whatever. I've always liked Purdue. I don't think they have much of a chance against the juggernaut that is UConn, but I'll be pulling for them. Give 'em hell, Boilermakers.

"... I'm not surprised other Big Ten coaches were pissed about it."

Sorry, no. Not even close. Several teams were getting their "information" one way or another. OSU very likely had a routine just like Michigan's, only better. Several Big Ten schools pathetically followed OSU's lead and took an opportunity to gang up on Michigan. No due process, etc.

No, fuck the B1G

League went all in propping up OSU football since the BCS era started, believing it would be the conference’s flagship program- and for most of that 25 year period they seemingly made the correct choice. But the inability to pivot or at least equally brand multiple elite programs is unforgivable.  Bama, UGA, LSU, Florida have all been celebrated and supported by the SEC during their runs of elite play- the conference was wise enough to not choose favorites.

Then shit football programs crapping on UM football post Stalions bs was gross.  If they were so offended by the “cHEATinG!” , they should give back the revenues UM made them the past 3 years in making the playoffs.

Fuck the B1G- except maybe Minnesota- who has a head coach, Fleck, with the football IQ and honesty to acknowledge how great UM was this past year.

John Wooden is about the greatest CBB coach ever (who can match him) but also a great guy who graduated from Purdue and was named national player of the year in 1932. Retroactively, the 1932 Purdue team is recognized as NCAA champs, before a tourney was around. His book "Pyramid of Success" is legendary too.

Boiler Up - cheering for Purdue (even though my son went to IU.  In-laws (rip) went to Purdue)

Painter is a good dude

fuck the purdue football coach.  A Painter/ Purdue NC puts the football team and coach in the back seat

Pulled in a lot of directions here:

- Purdue fans are annoying and I'm bitter about the Crisler takeover

- UConn fans are annoying and their absolutely dominant Final Four success rate (5 titles in 6 appearances before this season) makes me envious because Michigan's is terrible (1 title in 8 appearances including SIX runner-ups)

- I'll win my bracket pool if Purdue wins, will finish like 8th if UConn does

- Painter seems like a good dude and none of the Purdue players are aholes like a lot of college basketball

- I'm tired of MSU being the most recent Big Ten natty winner

In summary, probably leaning towards UConn still, but would be ok if Purdue wins

Not sure it will matter. I see UConn winning big. And though I respect Matt Painter, I find UConn the much more intriguing--fun--team.

Basketball and football are two different worlds. I don’t be grudge and hold against Matt Painter the things that a grandstanding, virtue signaling turd like Ryan Walters says. I don’t care about “conference loyalty,” but if Purdue wins, I’ll be happy for them. Painter seems like a good dude.

That said, Ryan Walters and his “we have the receipts, we have the transactions, we know what you did” bullshit can honestly fuck off. I will laugh whenever I see his team lose.

If you, Bielema, and everyone who took the opportunity to gang up on Michigan during Sign-Gate REALLY CARED about what happened, you would’ve begged your AD to give back every last cent your school made off of Michigan’s trips to the CFP. Because to you, it’s just blood money, right? You don’t want to make a profit on “screwing over” the truthful, honest, hard working programs, right?

Not a single conference member has given back any of those funds.

No, I've never been a 'root for the conference' guy.

I also enjoy watching this UConn team quite a bit, so I'll be rooting for UConn.

One of my favorite Final Fours was '99 when Rip Hamilton and Khalid El-Amin took down Duke for their first national title. Have had a soft spot for UConn since then.

After having to sit through their meathead fans taking over Crisler a couple months back and watching Edey get away with more or less everything all afternoon, nah, I'm good. Go Huskies.
