Will MSU finish above Michigan in recruiting this year?

COVID caveats apply but they’re ahead by a smidge as of now.

If Michigan can win out, IMO I think Domani Jackson commits here. I also think Conerly the 5 star lineman from Washington is a good bet for this class as well

Just win!

Yearly recruiting rankings can be misleading when comparing teams. The reason - some teams just don't have the numbers to give out therefore the total rankings can be misleading. I pay more attention - especially this time of year - to the average rating per committed recruit.

A good example is the current 247 Composite team rankings which has PSU at number three but if you look at their average / recruit it's at 90.44 but they've factored in 25 recruits which say they're just about done. Look at some teams behind them like OSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M........they have far less commits than PSU but higher averages per recruit -  and are waiting on several blue chippers to make up their mind. They'll blow by PSU when some of these kids commit to those schools.

The only true recruiting comparison that I pay serious attention to is the 247 Composite Roster Talent comparison which accounts for all the the scholarship players on the roster. Here's the 2021 rating:

in the days of the transfer portal does it even matter?

you can go out and poach a top player from another program and plug holes.

that is why state is where they are right now, the transfer portal NOT straight up recruiting.

What the hell is going on with our recruiting though, for real? Even if we land Conerly and Jackson which is best case scenario, the amount of top 100, 200, or 300 kids in this class appears to be extremely low for Michigan standards.

As I said in another Harbaugh thread, the recruiting has been the thing I’ve been most disappointed in from the time he was hired and leads directly to some of the other downfalls. I was expecting annual borderline top 5 classes. We used to get those frequently.

Here’s our finishes in his full classes: 8, 5, 22, 8, 14, 13 and this year will likely be another class outside the top 10.

I expected better.

For comparisons sake, here’s been Ohio States’s finishes in that time frame: 4, 2, 2, 14, 5, 2 and this year will likely be another top 5 class.

Yeah.

It's not always about the totals are the end of every recruiting cycle though. Talent identification and development. Which top recruits from each class can you name that got better while here?

There are schools that do worse in the "rankings" that seem to do better with developing talent.

Compose yourself.

It's true that 5-star > 4-star > 3-star as predictors of success. It's less clear that #199 differs appreciably from #301 (or #299 from #401). Get the idea?

Also, take a close look at the offer lists of the commits. I see nine Sparty recruits with respectable offer lists (a bunch of good Power Five schools ... Vanderbilt and the like do not count). Michigan has more guys with good offer lists.

I'd still say this is a good-looking class for Sparty. I find it interesting that Michigan didn't aggressively pursue #4 (Gates) or #5 (Mangham), at least not that I've heard. (The latter at least has a Michigan offer.)

I'm a little perplexed at how low the class average is compared to JH's typical class.  I'm sure last year has something to do with it, but I assumed with this season's success and some of the new assistants like Clink, Bellomy, & Hart that it would have improved.  I don't know if they are relying more on their own scouting or if it's just a down year, but I hope they can land a few more pieces before the end of the cycle and gain some steam for the following class.

Didn't I read on this site when that kid from Indiana committed that recruiting sites haven't been very good this year because of COVID? I am sure they did a good job with 5 stars, but some of those 3* we picked up might under rated.

I know Domani is a pipe dream but man our secondary would be so good with him, Will Johnson, and gemon green. Our team would be straight ? next year
