UM possibly pursuing Rice grad transfer OT

Submitted by Term on
Calvin Anderson, a 6'5" 300 lb. LT and 2 time all-conference USA, is grad transferring from Rice, and Michigan is apparently interested. I know the general consensus of the board is 'no' to grad transfer OL, but I feel like this is different. He's not a guy who lost a job or could never win a job at a bigger school. He seems like a guy trying to play up in competition for his last year, a la Jaaron Simmons in basketball. I know that hasn't work out great, but the majority of us were pretty excited at the time. Could be good insurance for Newsome not coming back, and any competition at OT is good

Well Friday is going to OSU, Petit-Frere was a significant longsot even before losing Frey, and Patterson is about a 50/50 shot between us and UCLA so I don't think its going to be an issue anymore on the space side.

Think this says everything you need to know about how confident the coaches are in the young guys being ready to go next year, and that is not very.

NPF has only taken officials to Michigan and Notre Dame and signing day is a month away. We were the first school to offer him, we have a former player on his coaching staff, his head coach is a big fan of Jim's, and Notre Dame just lost their OL coach. We might not get him, but we have as good a chance as anyone right now - he's certainly not a "significant" longshot.

National consensus of a recruiting writers tends to be more accurate than Michigan insiders, see Isaiah Wilson. The national consensus is that it’s notre dame or a school in the south for him. There are zero crystal balls and the only people who ever mention Michigan in his recruitment are Michigan people. I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

Talk was that he was considering Florida State, and then when Frey was his main recruiter here (with some Drevno), and went to Florida State, along with Petit-Frere's comment that Frey to FSU would be something he considered... people started thinking Michigan was dead in the water.

However, bear in mind that he already visited both Michigan and Notre Dame, and has decided to take his remaining three visits to Ohio State, Alabama, and Florida. I mention this because as you can see, he isn't visiting FSU, so if the FSU/Frey pull was going to be so strong, it doesn't seem like it materialized. Now I'm not saying he's going to Michigan (though I'd be ecstatic if he did), but it seems he's considering several other schools in addition to Michigan and ND. Also of note he received offers from OSU Bama and Florida a long time ago, so it isn't like he has new interest in those schools now simply because they are more interested in him. If it was the case I'd say its 100% a lost cause.

dont understand why this board loves Watson so much, hes really not that good. Ambry Thomas will pass him this offseason anyway, not to mention St Juste and a few others having a chance.  JBB is the one that doesn't seem right to me, Newsome is prbably not going to play again and Cole is gone, How can JBB not be one of the top 3 tackles we have next year. Even if Hudson makes it at tackle and this transfer or one of the other kids passes JBB, he would still be needed for depth.

THANK YOU!!! Nothing against the kid but every big Play we gave up to a receiver this year seemed to be on our safeties or Watson. If he was above average instead of serviceable, we probably win another game this year(OSU picked on him consistently on that winning drive).

Who else were they going to pick on?

I'll admit that Watson isn't the best corner on the team, but his play is far better than your giving him credit for.  Whether he's back depends solely on the improvement that Thomas, St. Juste, and others show - if they are good enough to put him on the bottom end of the corner depth chart, he's probably not back.  But that would be a small surprise to me...

"How can JBB not be one of top 3 tackles"...

well if he's fucked up enough to get locked in the doghouse then that's one way. Its not the NFL...CFB coaches are supposed to be about more than just wins. So, w/o knowing what he may have done its impossible assume that he SHOULD be on the team (and no I'm not assuming that he shouldn't either).

Watson seemed more than serviceable this year. We'll likely need Watson for depth next season, especially against certain passing sets. Unless, of course, the coaches saw something my untrained eye didn't. (Need to do something about that eye.)

UM will still have to recruit him like any other player so if they think he can help them I say don't fuck around and go all out. Otherwise another school will and we'll be 2nd fiddle again.

probably heading to a mild finish, grad transfers, especially at OT, would be the best option.

We have a slight lead for J. Patterson, but it depends on Drevno (his main recruiter).

Bring him in. Why not? Tackle is clearly the position that is most up in the air. Will Newsome be healthy? Will JBB be on the team? Can Ulizio or Runyan improve or have they hit their ceilings? Will one or more of the redshirt freshman be able to step in and play at a high level? Will they try out Bredeson at tackle if the interior ends up being Onwenu, Spanellis, Ruiz? Have I covered everything? So yeah...go get this kid. Might be a nice one year rental.

I'm too hopeful to research this and find out if there is any validity to his interest or if he's worth a scholarship. I'm going to bed tonight dreaming that we've found our Jordan Howard of left tackling and he'll slot in perfectly.

Sounds like a kid worth pursuing.

However, can we now seriously consider TJ Wheatley moving over to OT?  Dude didn't catch a single pass last season.  He may have unbeliveable athletic skills (in practice), but not one catch.  He has the size; obviously, he's plenty athletic for the position, and we have a gaping hole at the position.

As much as we'd like to think that the coaches make those changes in a vacuum, they don't.  Maybe Harbaugh, Drevno, Frey, dad, et all have spoken to him about changing positions, and he just doesn't want to?  If he doesn't want to, they won't force it and he'll have to live with whatever PT he earns at his current position.  That's on him.  Or maybe the coaches have determined that they don't need him to switch (or want him to)?

I do agree that his athleticism would fit well at OT, but I'm not sure his size is where it should be.  Didn't he top out around 280, and then have to lose wieght for TE?  If 280 is the cieling, he's not big enough to be effective.  Maybe he just doesn't want to get bigger than that?

He has all those things, but have you ever watched him block? That’s kinda important for an offensive lineman, and he’s really not good at that important skill. If he were to change positions, he would undoubtedly go to defensive line where most schools wanted him as a recruit.

you wouldn't wait until his 4th year. He's never played the position, has a lot to learn and size to gain. It's not realistic to think he could immediately step in and start. Why make the move otherwise? We can still use a blocking TE.

Not sure if you were trying to be dramatic for effect but he had 3 catches last season.   He also had a cast on his hand for much of the season and was dealing with a pretty serious knee injury that happened during camp.

Honestly, this would be great. I'm not saying he would end up being amazing, but someone that  at the minimum could be a reliable backup would be nice, with the possibility of potentially even being a good starter.
