Thanks for the stats. To clarify, I meant average by its own standards and expectations.
47th and 8th combined is not good enough to be considered a title contender, which is what UM is striving to be on a year in, year out basis. It's good, but undeniably this team has taken steps backward on offense since the beginning of the season.
|02/12/2019 - 11:17pm||I don't disagree. When a…||
I don't disagree. When a team switches every ball screen, Matthews is about the only guy who can create his own shot. Poole was awful tonight and I think Ignas Brazdeikis has lost his right to a nickname. No more Iggy.
Pergaps Beilein will consider different offensive sets with fewer on ball screens and even incorporate some post-ups for Teske. Who knows? It's worth a consideration at this point. The offense has been average since mid-December.
|02/12/2019 - 11:05pm||It's hard to point to just…||
It's hard to point to just one thing when looking at the box score. Bottom line - Michigan just got outplayed. The offense is not producing enough easy looks and UM isn't hitting outside shots with the same kind of regularity as past Beilein teams. The defense has to be lights out to win games and that obviously didn't happen tonight, especially in the first half.
PSU also had a good defensive game plan of pressuring 3/4 court and forcing UM to start their half court offense with 20 seconds or less. Hats off to them.
Offensively for UM, I just don't see a big improvement in store for this team. Maybe they can make a deep tourney run with defense, but I doubt it.
|02/09/2019 - 4:17pm||Agreed on the officiating. I…||
Agreed on the officiating. I was pleasantly surprised by the blocking call on Davison in the second half. I thought the refs did a nice job of finally ignoring all of the attempted flopping and charge taking. They let the big boys play down low as well.

One more stop and a bucket would be a great end to the half

If only Charles had footwork like Happ. Ugh.

He rushed every shot near the rim. Either attack the rim or just compose yourself and shoot over the top of shorter people. He chose option three....shoot while looking goofy, being off-balance and falling away from the rim.
|01/29/2019 - 9:51pm||I think football…||
I think football frustrations were spilling over into this thread given the slow start. I think everybody, myself included, was hoping this would be a slaughter from the get-go.

Dakich contradicts himself in the same sentence talking about Simpson and his offense.

Playing subpar on both ends but only down one...it could be worse

I know it's been said by many people tonight already but can someone please tell Teske that he is over 7 feet tall...my goodness he has been awful near the basket tonight...awful awful awful

I laughed at how right you are. Dakich just saying stuff to hear himself talk. Since when does playing hard earn somebody foul immunity?? Oh Dakich....lol

Wesson is always good for at least one dumb foul. Good to see Teske challenge a shot there.

MSU looks tired. They'll make a run at some point though.
|01/27/2019 - 2:08pm||Probably too big of a…||
Probably too big of a deficit for MSU to overcome. Definitely a terrible half but they were bound to lose a conference game at some point, just like UM.
|01/26/2019 - 9:42am||Probably depends on your…||
Probably depends on your definition of not ending well. If ending well is a national championship, then yes I agree. But this team could definitely make an Elite 8 or Final 4 with great defense and mediocre offense.
|01/22/2019 - 8:42am||I watched Cardinal Stritch…||
I watched Cardinal Stritch play yesterday at Flyin to the Hoop in Dayton. I'm not encouraged to hear you say that Maumee got blown out by them because I wasn't too impressed with what I saw.
Although in fairness the game before was Prolific Prep vs Spire (LaMelo Ball's team) and so watching Cardinal Stritch play another local DIV school was like watching middle schoolers. (Starting lineups for the prep schools included 5 guys over 6'9" plus Ball, Rocket Watts - MSU commit, Nemari Burnett - top 50 junior guard, and another 6'6" kid committed to Xavier. Prolific blew them out because Ball's team really doesn't try to play defense (especially Ball...surprise surprise!).
Anyway, while I'm sure Zeb is a good player, his team obviously isn't if they got run off the court by Stritch.
|01/19/2019 - 2:29pm||You can play your heart out…||
You can play your heart out and still get mentally bullied. For whatever reason, nobody looked comfortable and/or confident on the offensive end and there were multiple possessions where guys passed up open shots.
I agree that they did not get physically bullied.
I think we are saying mostly the same thing but with different language.
|01/19/2019 - 2:06pm||Mentally bullied is a good…||
Mentally bullied is a good way to describe today's performance. UM played tight the whole time.
|01/19/2019 - 2:04pm||I think most of the…||
I think most of the reactions have been within reason. It was an awful game and frustrating to lose to a Wisconsin team that just isn't very good. With that being said, it's just one game.
|01/19/2019 - 2:02pm||Totally agree with other…||
Totally agree with other guys being afraid to take shots. That happened multiple times in both halves today and most of the time it led to a possession ending with a turnover or forced shot.

We'll be ok as long as this isn't a sign of things to come on the road.

Hopefully a loss gets the team to improve deficiencies on the offensive end.
Iggy was unfortunately just really bad in every way today. This should fuel him if he is the player everybody hopes he is.
|01/19/2019 - 1:39pm||Brooks not taking that shot…||
Brooks not taking that shot and the following charge sums up the way we're playing offense today. Nobody wants to score and then somebody ends up trying to force something.

Poole continues to be the only one with any confidence on the offensive end. Probably should sub Livers for Iggy. He just doesn't have it today.

The offense just has no rhythm. Hopefully that will change.

Let's see if UM can turn it around. That first half offense was very tentative. Poole is the only one who looks comfortable.

Alabama-Clemson IV was just as predictable and drama-free.

Could you explain how Teske would give Zion fits? Just curious.
|01/12/2019 - 5:34pm||Disappointing: Penn State…||
Disappointing: Penn State followed by Nebraska. I put PSU first here because they were coming off of an NIT title and while expectations weren't necessarily that high, they're off to a horrendous start both in the league and outside of it. Nebraska had high expectations but still has time and opportunity to meet those expectations.
Overachieving: I guess Maryland, but they're the beneficiary of an extremely weak schedule thus far. Next choice: Michigan - Let's be honest, no one expected this. They have far outplayed preseason expectations thus far.
Team about to plummet: Maryland. They will get exposed in the next few weeks and will struggle to finish above .500 in the league.
Team about to make a run: I'll say Michigan - why not? There's no reason they can't keep this up. The schedule is not ridiculous and every team besides MSU appears to be a notch below them.
Side note: I see the regular season race in the Big Ten as a two team fight to the finish. Many have said that 15-5 might be good enough to win the conference and that there will be cannibalization, but I think UM and MSU are rising above as the clear co-favorites. One of them goes 18-2 or 17-3.

It'a just as bad watching the replay. No communication. They were clearly in man-to-man but Reddish's man chose to drop to the basket and there was no switch on the screen.
