OT: Teams we Love to Hate

Submitted by M Ascending on

Okay.  yesterday we had a thread regarding teams besides Michigan that we root for.  Well, today let's put on our nasty boy pants and talk about what really matters -- the teams we love to hate.

I'm curious to know the 10 college football teams (in order) that you most despise (with the reason, if you care to give it).  I suspect that 90% of us will have the same top four teams in some order.  It's the next six that might prove the most interesting.

I'll save my response for a little later, but will just get things started with my obvious number 1:

tOSU -- Because ... Buck the Fuckeyes ... and also, Woody, Spielman, Galloway, Cris Carter, Clarett, Boston, Tressel, Urban, redneck Buckeye scum fans (including the one who broke my car window in 2004), and the list just goes on and on.  My t-shirt says it all.

[EDIT:  Okay, now that there are over 50 responses, here are my top 10:

1. OSU

2. MSU

3. PSU

4. ND

These are the four I expected to be at the top of almost everyone's list.  ND used to be No.2, but have dropped since we stopped playing them every year.  I actually used to like PSU, but since the Jerry/JoePa scandal and the way their fan base has reacted irrationally in support of Paterno, they have moved near the top of my list.

5. Tennessee --  Ever since Fullmer voted us No. 4 in 1997 to help give Nebraska half a NC, as revenge for Woodson beating Manning for the Heisman.

6.  Baylor -- Never used to care about them either way, but the recent scandals can't be ignored.  And how the hell could you hire Ken Starr as your president?

7.  Nebraska -- See No. 5.  That cheesy asshole Tom Osborne announced his retirement just to gain the sympathy vote from the coaches to give them half the NC.  They should never have even been in that position, but for that ridiculous kick-ball TD they scored to beat Missouri.

8.  Alabama -- Hated them when they had that racist Bear Bryant coaching.  Hate them now that they have that douche bag Saban.

9.  Ole Miss -- Hugh Freeze. Laquon Treadwell.  Confederate flags. Need I say more.

10. FSU --  Bowden was basically a slime bucket.  And why should they get free shoes when I don't?

10a. Pete Finebum -- If he were a college he would make my list.]

Watching From Afar

1. OSU - For obvious reasons

2. MSU - I grew up in East Lansing, went to High School just outside of East Lansing, and have a parent who teaches at MSU. Needless to say I've spent more time on MSU's campus than most of their students. They are by far the worst group of fans I've ever encountered. From getting beer poured on me after the ND night game back in 2011(?) for wearing a blue North Face jacket (I was working as an usher FOR special events that night and we had to wear dark blue or black) to watching their own fans throw glass bottles from the upperdeck to the lowerdeck. Their hypocrisy and Napoleon syndrome... They're just awful.

3. ND - Kind of because they're like a mirror image of Michigan in some ways. Blue blood historic power. Prestigious school with global appeal. Insufferable sometimes. Mostly I think BK is a complete ass hole.

4. Alabama - Another horrible fan base in an annoying conference. If it weren't for Saban they would be where they were just over a decade ago... Under sanctions and going ~.500 every year.

5. USC - Grew up watching them beat Michigan in Rose Bowls. Their general cockiness is also annoying. But mostly this is just because of the losses to them.

6. PSU - This is more recent. They've been insufferable since last season.

7. Anywhere Bert (Bielema) coaches.

There are teams that you dislike but can still feel bad for from time to time.  But if Notre Dame football and the New York Yankees never won another game I wouldn't shed a single tear

1) OSU - there's nothing in all of sports that can match how I feel towards this school, but especially their fans. I haven't lived in MI/OH area in over a decade, but these insufferable fans continue to come out of the woodwork to troll me even though I don't give them any ammo. I'm almost as interested in every OSU game as a Michigan game because I want them to lose so bad. Maybe I need help...

2) MSU - Many of my friends went to this school. Although I don't deal with stupid fans like many on this blog, I happened to grow up with a distaste and can't seem to shake it. 9 times out 10 I root against them.

3) ND - Since we haven't played them for awhile, my "hate" isn't nearly as strong. I still enjoy watching them lose though.

4) USC - Always hated them and their actor/model-looking athletes/coaches. Not really, but I like seeing them lose.

5) BAMA - I don't mind their success, I just can't stand Nick Saban. Enjoy hating on them now.

6) FSU - Something about Fisher drives me crazy and I think my hate level went up with Winston's cockiness.

7-10) Any school that hired a notable former OSU coach/player (e.i., Texas, Rutgers, Cincinnati, etc.)

that come right to mind: OSU, Nebraksa, MSU, Alabama, ND, Oklahoma, pretty much the entire SEC.  If these teams play each other I usually pull for a natural disaster to occur.

1. OSU - Obvious things are obvious

t2. MSU/ND - Both have inflated sense of self worth, one might have been earned, but that was eons ago.  Fans are annoying as hell.  These are actual rivals.

4. Illinois - I went there for my PhD.  Good school for that, but holy hell their fans are a special kind of ignorant, especially about football, and they really, really think they have a rivalry against us.  Our record vs Ill when I was there: 5-0.  I even thanked M football in my thesis for not losing to Illinois while I was there.  Despite my special hatred for them, they're no rival, so they get 4th.

5. Minnesota - something about them irritates the hell out of me.  Maybe its the goofy ass gopher mascot.  We should never, ever lose to this team.

6. Penn Sate - rapey things and now that I live in PA, they're pretty annoying.  They actually think they would have beaten us last year if our game was later.  idiots.

7. Rutgers - they're just terrible and I want them to go 0 for the rest of eternity

8. Nebraska - Remember the Alamo Bowl! (any team that benefits from reffing against us)

9. Baylor - covering up sex crimes and that special type of baptist holier than thou attitude

10. Mississippi - cheaters and holier than thou attitude that comes with the territory

Don't let the liberal media tell you how to think and feel!

1. Ohio State - Obvious reasons are obvious

2. Michigan State - Obvious reasons are still obvious

3. Notre Dame - Bo knows where they need to go. Annoyingly lucky and over-ranked all the time.

4 (tie). PSU and Baylor.

6. Ole Miss. I had the misfortune of working with a couple Ole Miss grads. They are haughty and cheat on everything yet never win.

7. Bama. Waiting for them to talk a step back has taken way too long. Saban is as lovable as a mule.

8 (tie). L'Ville/ Duke/ UNC/ Kentucky - Mostly for their basketball chicanery.

Before I moved here... 1) MSU. Easily the most delusional fan base out there. I'm not talking PSU/Baylor delusional, more of on-field perception. Their local sports show yesterday was unreal. Acting like they are the 85 Bears and Michigan is Bowling Green. No respect, vile, just horrible people. 1A) OSU. So much hatred for obvious reasons, but I think deep down both fan bases respect the rivalry T3) PSU/Baylor. No need to go further 5) ND. Used to be my number 2, but we just don't see enough of them anymore for my blood to boil constantly. 6) USC. Damn Rose Bowls and massive crooked overall record against them 7) Tennessee. Fulmer, Heisman whining, they're asswipes 8) Alabama. Tired of them 9) Florida. They talk so much shit and always think they will whip us. Try 0-4 on for size 10) Utah. Can't ever seem to beat them, although that's the only reason, cause I'd probably run through a wall for Whittingham

wait listed my daughter, and then called to offer her a spot after we had already paid the deposit at Michigan.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking that call.

She was going to Michigan either way, but fuck ND.  Pompous assholes.

As for the rest of the list, same as everyone else.

OSU, MSU, ND, PSU, the entire SEC, and Clemson.

I am old and the list used to have a single 1 (OSU) and everyone else was distant 2.

But since Mark Dantonio has taken over, MSU has shot to the top of the list. And yes I often root for OSU to beat MSU unless it affects us negatively.

1. MSU

2. OSU

3, PSU

4. ND

5. Pittsburgh (MSU lite)

6. Rutgers

7. Iiinois

8. Iowa

9. Arkansas

10. Tennessee

  • msu because obviously
  • ditto osu
  • ditto nd
  • ditto psu
  • alabama, auburn, tennessee, florida, clemson, south carolina because they are all rivals of UGA which I still like (see 2nd favorite team thread - although less than I used to because of the whole Richt thing - great respect for that man)
  • usc because of their stupid rose bowl practically home field advantage and that shouldn't be an excuse, but them with their loose morals and sleeping in their own beds and phantom touchdowns and practically professional players can just go screw themselves

1) OSU - Because fucking obviously. Despise and am infuriated at the fact that for the last 15 years, seemingly everything has gone their way. Every bounce, every lucky break, every call, everything. Tressel getting fired was the best thing that ever happened to them, as one of the alltime great coaches, who happens to be from Ohio and used to be a GA at OSU, just HAPPENED to be taking a sabbatical at the same time, and all they had to endure to get him was a .500 season where they still went to a NYD bowl game. Had that scandal happened to Michigan, we'd still be recovering. The football gods are a cruel, cruel bunch.

2) Pretty much everyone else is #2. There are other teams I generally dislike, but no one comes close to the raw, seething hatred I feel for OSU.

At what point does the law of averages finally swing back the other way on OSU? Every other blueblood program, with the exception of maybe Oklahoma, has experienced down years in the last 30-40 years.

1. Ohio State (Obviously)

2. Notre Dame (I really, really, really can't stand Kelly)

3. Alabama (Their fans are the most annoying thing ever)

4. USC (Seems like we always lose some recruit to them just because it's LA)

5. Michigan State (Obviously)

6. Nebraska (damn split national title!)

7. Ole Miss (bunch of cheaters)

8. Oklahoma (I live in Oklahoma and the fans are ridiculous)

9. UCLA (recruits need to stop picking them!)

10. Auburn (I just hate the SEC)

I don't really hate MSU. It sucks that they were better for a brief window but even in that time their fanbase was miserable and they seemed to take more joy in Michigan being bad than their own team being good. It's that level of obsession that makes them hard to hate to me.

One I do love to hate is Texas A&M. They have a big win every so often and it riles up their fanbase to the point where they seem to actually believe they are a blueblood with a rich football history. Then they are humbled soon after and become quiet and bitter about UT again.

1. OSU. Is there any explanation needed?

2. USC. I hate their fight song (it's on a par with "Boomer Sooner" for sheer obnoxiousness), hate their sunny weather, their good looks, their arrogance, the apathy of Los Angelenos toward football in general, the way they hoard west coast recruits that could help Michigan finally throttle Ohio State (!!!!!!!), and that their major bowl games are nearly always in the Rose Bowl and practically a home game for them.

They are due some major payback, and one of the things I enjoyed most about Harbaugh's stint at Stanford was how his teams beat them up on a regular basis, especially during the "What's your deal?!" game. Perfect. Near-peak schadenfreude for me. I want to see Michigan play them in the Rose Bowl again and run up the score on them.

3. Notre Dame. I hate their Paddy Whackery the most.

4. Bama. They take all the fun out of college football, and their fans suck, too.

5. Pick a Florida school, for reasons similar to my hatred of USC. Sunny weather, all their bowl games are home games, arrogant fans, etc.  FSU/UF/Miami (YTM), they're all the same to me.

Don't have hate for any team, as its just a game. These are the teams I enjoy seeing lose in order:

1. PSU - Its fans are annoying in many ways. Before Sandusky, the fans were always talking about "the grand experiment" and how PSU was so superior to every other school out there. I always viewed PSU as a good state school, about the same as every other state school in the B1G besides UM. Never saw it as anything special. After Sandusky, the fanbase's irrational defense of pedophile enabler Paterno puts PSU firmly at #1. The school should have received the death penalty.

2. UM - Obvious reasons. Though in the 90's I would say the "intense dislike" was a lot more when UM actually would win vs. OSU. However, have always respected the school and the rivalry. Have many relatives and friends who've attended the school.

3. ND - The online fans are dickwads who have a superiority persona even though 99% never attended the school. The alums I've met in real life have been chill. Also, when they are good the media hypes them up to no end.

4. Alabama - This school has cheated for so long, even pre-Saban (look up Albert Means scandal). I know, everyone kills, everyone cheats, etc etc., but Bama takes cheating to another level. Even though there have been tons of pics of players with wads of cash, player parking lot full of expensive cars, that shady Arab clothing store owner giving away suits, the car accessory store giving away dubs, even a coach giving a player cash and when caught calling it a loan, they get away with it all and the media never investigates.

5. Amherst College - Most alums I've met from this school have been haughty pricks.

That's it. Don't have any strong feelings about any other school. Though MSU is starting to get annoying.

Very small gap between each of the top 3

  1. Ohio State (obvious)
  2. Michigan State (obvious)
  3. Notre Dame (obvious-as an institution, I hate ND more than OSU/MSU, but less as a football program)
  4. Alabama (Their reign has gone on too long and they have crazy, trashy fans)
  5. Tennessee (Wannabe SEC school that rides on the cottails of its rival)
  6. Auburn   (SEC school that rides on the cottails of its rival and has severly unrealistic fan expectations)
  7. USC (Fans are by far the most pathetic of any blue blood school: for example, shitty attendance/fan engagement as soon as they lose. In addition, incredibly arrogant and the type of student that goes to school there tends to be particularly spoiled/out of touch. UCLA fans are on point when they call SC "University of Spoiled Children".)
  8. Oregon (Michigan has struggled against them in football, they ruined our miracle run in this year's basketball tournament, and an ex of mine that I don't get along with is a Ducks fan.)
  9. Louisville (Will always hate them for 2013 in basketball)
  10. Rutgers (I hate that we have to deal with them)

1. MSU, because their fans are the most insuffurable, delusional, raving a-holes in sports.

2. OSU, fans are also a-holes, but I give the team grudging respect.

3. PSU, rapist

4. Baylor, rapists

5. Mississippi State, cheaters

6. Florida, because I live in FL and their fans are cocky and obnoxious

1. OSU (supreme arrogance, doucheness, and lack of bathing) 2. Bama (super obnoxious and gross fans) 3. Tennesee (I live here and their fans are obnoxious) 4. ND (elitists...for no reason) 5. USC/FSU (pure party schools) 6. Florida (seem to draw out a lot of arrogance from fans and players... and I can't watch shark week and feel the same as before) 7. MSU (disrespekt) 8. Whichever SEC school is doing well (whoever is doing well suddenly spurs the urge for the fan base to speak arrogantly by cutting down the midwestern schools and anything not SEC). 9. Ditto # 8 10. Ditto # 9 except the midrange schools like Ms St, Ole Miss, Tenn who talk crap but have no rights to talk crap) I really dislike the SEC and root for any teams playing them (with exception of OSU and...nope, that's it)
