MSU is flat broke? Just 86'd men's and women's swimming; reopening dorms, 400-student lectures in January
"BREAKING: MSU, cash-strapped amid the COVID-19 pandemic, will cut men's and women's swimming and diving, effective at the end of this season. The savings could near $2 million a year."

This could not have been an easy decision.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:12 PM ^
Go blue. We play Minnesota on Saturday.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:12 PM ^
Last week: "MSU enrollment is down 2%--a slip of 866 students from fall 2019--contributing to a $54 million decline in revenue at the state's largest university."
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:18 PM ^
so they lose out on $54,000,000 for having 886 fewer students? That's $61k per student. I know it doesn't cost that in tuition every year. What do these schools spend all that money on?
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:20 PM ^
Don't believe the professors are underpaid
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:44 PM ^
"contributing to a $54 million decline in revenue"
Not the same as responsible for. We know athletic department revenue will be way down.
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:46 PM ^
Yeah i re-read the passage and I am not sure if it is the sole contributor or one of multiple factors. The article could be a bit more clear about that.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:12 PM ^
State supported school and the state coffers are not exactly overflowing right now. Actions have consequences.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:22 PM ^
State coffers stopped overflowing a LONG time ago. The legislature only contributes 14% of the University's budget. (I think the % is a little higher for MSU.)
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:50 PM ^
Oh I see, only $1B less in revenues projected for next FY, state coffers will be fine, not to worry.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:24 PM ^
$500M to Nassar victims didn't help their situation either. Or allowing Dantonio to retire after he collected his $4.3M bonus.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:34 PM ^
Ridiculous that Spartan swim teams have to be cancelled while they are paying out millions to Dantonio, Simons, the former AD, and that professor who covered up for Nassar. Do you think any of them would forego one red cent to restore the swim program at the university they all professed to love so much? Me neither. The concepts of honor and integrity are virtually dead about now.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:05 PM ^
It’s about the kids man.
October 23rd, 2020 at 12:16 PM ^
Uh, if you haven't watched Spartan swimming lately you probably don't realize that those teams will not be missed. Habitually last in the B1G. Still, a tough blow to the kids on scholly.
October 22nd, 2020 at 8:53 PM ^
Yes, I agree. If everyone wore their mask and social distanced it would all be so much better. Than you for making that point.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:17 PM ^
Looks like my future Spartan kid won’t be a swimmer on the MSU swim team.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:27 PM ^
Jesus. You're 17. Set your sights higher, man.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:18 PM ^
I wish I was 17 again... maybe.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:54 PM ^
I'm 58 and the homecoming queen and cheerleader from my high school class has taken her shot at me twice on Facebook in the last few months. She's still beautiful and is a lot of fun but is about to go through her second divorce. She now tells me she's always crushed on me.
She knows my wife of 31 years is stuck overseas due to Covid and that we are very happy together.
I was a very stupid 17 year old and deserve a second chance.
Or maybe she just has Coviditis and is desperate?
Strange times, for sure.

"400 in-person classes" does not equal "400-student lectures."
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:09 PM ^
Exactly. This is news because MSU had no in-person classes this fall.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:23 PM ^
Seriously OP...this is some Sparty grammar.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:28 PM ^
Engler and all his cronies made plenty of money. Plenty of money for Dantonio too. I'm sure their evil former President is enjoying her retirement and emeritus position too.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:47 PM ^
They can't exactly have much money lying around after having to shell out half a billion to Larry Nassar's victims.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:51 PM ^
Not too long ago Bill Beekman was thinking the athletic department could break even:
I'd guess that's not viable goal anymore. Putting 2,500 more students into dorms is just another revenue enhancement.
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:05 PM ^
Or maybe that was the plan all along and cutting two relatively expensive non-revenue sports was part of the plan...
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:53 PM ^
I'm sure Dantonio staying for that bonus didn't have some sort of impact..oh wait-
"The athletic department has furloughed several staff members recently, including former football coach Mark Dantonio, who now has a $100,000 annual contract to serve as a brand ambassador, and Jamie Baldwin, SID for swimming and diving."
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:51 PM ^
He did win a Rose Bowl don't forget ! Rare achievement around B1G country.
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:58 PM ^
MSU has been broken for a long time
October 22nd, 2020 at 8:27 PM ^
Definitely morally bankrupt.
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:24 PM ^
Well that's unfortunate. We know swimmer's for Staee. I hope they get immediate transfer waivers.
I really feel for those kids. Good luck to them all.
October 23rd, 2020 at 7:22 AM ^
you should be happy for them. It's much safer this way - lowers the chance of them drowning.
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:41 PM ^
Confirmed with someone that knows that they told the kids 2 hours ago. Totally blind-sided them and naturally all the kids are devastated.
Yet HCs harboring felons got paid.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:15 PM ^
Jokes aside. That is terrible for the kids. I do feel bad for them.
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:52 PM ^
Engler and all his cronies made a bunch of money. Paid that huge bonus to Dantini who ended up “retiring” after he refused to make changes to the offense. Probably paid Dantini some additional hush money because he knows where all the bodies are buried. Izzo fosters and promotes a culture of sexual assault against women and is still employed. I am sure paying legal fees for Dantini and other lawsuits didn’t help either. I have to believe part of the reason that Dantini decided to retire and go quietly is because Engler agreed to make the Blackwell lawsuit go away.

COVID has not been easy on anyone that is for sure
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:02 PM ^
Best part of that article: D’antoni was furloughed from his bullshit AD job
October 23rd, 2020 at 10:07 AM ^
The $100k he was scheduled to receive doesn't mean Jack Sh*t to him at this point.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:05 PM ^
MSU is morally broke as well.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:20 PM ^
Speaking as someone who is currently on the academic job market, almost every university in America is flat broke right now.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:41 PM ^
To get 400 MSU students into a lecture hall you'd have to enroll 4000.
October 23rd, 2020 at 6:29 AM ^
Maybe. If the tanning salons are closed.
October 22nd, 2020 at 7:59 PM ^
Nothing compared to the Nassar settlement
October 22nd, 2020 at 8:27 PM ^
The more sports they drop the less likely their student athletes get assaulted. Smart move msu.
October 22nd, 2020 at 8:50 PM ^
They gave $7M to their new football HC so he could give a bunch of raises to his old Colorado staff members but, sure, get rid of a major sport.
