Let's Argue About the Super Bowl Halftime Show

I thought the Super Bowl halftime show was very entertaining, as did the group of 45-55 year old suburbanites that were at our Super Bowl party.  The teens and tweens who were there enjoyed it, too.

The reaction on social media, however, seems to be split.

I'm seeing younger people complaining about the acts all being old or "washed up."

Also seeing complaints from the type of people who think only classic rock bands should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

What say you?

I enjoyed it.  Kendrick Lamar is neither old nor washed up, but I felt very old and washed-up when my 9-year old asked me who Dre and Snoop were.

I thought it was okay. It was indeed entertaining, but it's also a safe choice to bring in acts singing songs that people in their 30s and 40s will remember fondly from their youth.

Marketing is all about knowing your market.  Who is spending and making the big purchases right now?  30-40 year olds.

Let's go back 14 years.  Who was spending and making the big purchases at that time?  30-40 year olds.  Who played the Super Bowl and was well-received?  Tom Petty

When you choose the Super Bowl entertainment, you need to try to get people from the city that is hosting and people that will entertain the people who spend the most money.

This show was an A+.  I only wish they would have had a hologram of Tupac appear on Dre's piano during that portion.  I may have cried.

I was at the SB when Petty played halftime, was disappointed before game, but he rocked.  As a Pats fan, I'm still in therapy from that game, Tyree and end of the perfect season.  Sometimes we get a huge surprise.  Bitched that Bon Jovi didn't play halftime in NY, went with Bruno Mars instead.  What did we get, a HOF halftime show, so who knows?  Last night was good.  Come on man, who among us wouldn't want to hang with Snoop for a night??

They did a 2Pac song though, which is one of the most iconic California themed songs ever.  Would have made a lot of sense to incorporate him into it (although they only did Dre's opening verse, and not tupac's).

And while 2pac wasn't born in California he moved there at age 17 (and to LA at 24) and spent the prime of his career in LA under the Death Row label with iconic LA songs like To Live and Die in LA and was the face of west coast rap for much of the 90s.

That's kind of the camp that I'm in.  I used half time to clean up the food and start the dishwasher.  Let the dogs out and make a head call.

Not much interest in the halftime show.

I will say that I thought Mickey Guyton was amazing with the National Anthem. She nailed it.  Best since Whitney if you ask me.

And let's not forget who started soulful renditions of the national anthem, b/c it has a Michigan / Detroit connection: José Feliciano at the Tigers World Series in 1968.

Naturally, he was savaged for being unpatriotic, not a true American, etc. But he set the template that now seems normal—and his version seems tame.

50 looked chubby and he’s not from LA which is I suppose why Dr Dre was relevant. Em we know isn’t either. The Game should have been there if that label was part of the theme ....being from LA

Snoop is still in beer commercials so clearly he can play anywhere still. Mary sounded bad but it was fine and it being the first hip hop act it was a safe way to go
