I don't like being the downer here, but:

Blocking 80% isn't noticeable, our eyes adjust. To put this in perspective, cloud cover blocks 90% of light and we still see fine on a cloudy day.

Ann Arbor will be interesting light wise if the cloud cover is present, but even then it still won't seem like a night game from this.

Unless they mess with TV feeds, we won't notice differences on East Coast games with such small amounts being blocked.

In other words: eyes being incredible 1, space 0.

Unfortunately, I think you…

Unfortunately, I think you might be over estimating how much this will have an affect on perceived brightness. Brightness typically varies by orders of magnitude from inside to outside and with cloud cover etc.

What every reporter should…

What every reporter should be asking:

During the targeting review, what did the ref say to the other official that required them to intentionally cover their mouths to the camera?

During the targeting review,…

During the targeting review, the ref covered his mouth when talking to the other official. Never seen that before. Felt he didn't want his words shared, as it was most likely: "I don't want to call this but that isn't part of the rules"

Unfortunately, another 331…

Unfortunately, another 331 hospitalized with COVID in Miami-Dade county yesterday. COVID patients in hospital beds have increased more than 10-fold since the 24th.

Actually, that is exactly…

Actually, that is exactly what "more likely" considers.

Unfortunately, the numbers…

Unfortunately, the numbers released from Miami Dade today were awful: https://www.miamidade.gov/information/library/2021-12-28-covid-dashboard.pdf

Happy belated birthday!…

Happy belated birthday! Today's reported data makes it even clearer that this thread needs to go: https://www.miamidade.gov/information/library/2021-12-28-covid-dashboard.pdf

Positivity and hospitalizations all heading in a terrible direction (see slides 16, 17, 19 for graphs and contexts). Leaving this up is irresponsible.

Positivity rate of ~40%(!)…

Positivity rate of ~40%(!) in yesterday's reported data.

Hospital admissions up 133% in the last 7 days.

COVID patients in ICU/ non-ICU beds up almost 900% since the 24th.

Yes individual outcomes are better with this strain (especially if vaccinated and boosted), but these are terrible numbers at the likely start of a wave.

EDIT: Also, I'm not sure what numbers you are using in different places. There were 289 new COVID patients reported 12/27, and we haven't likely seen the whole effect of Xmas gatherings yet.

Yeah it is clear that this…

Yeah it is clear that this version is less likely to lead to hospitalizations and death. It is great long-term news: a milder strain that outcompetes other versions. But considering how much more transmissible it is it still is likely to be an ugly few weeks/months.

I haven't looked at every country and their spikes yet, but decoupling is a very strong word here, especially considering behavioral changes and population differences. Hope I am wrong.

This diary should be nuked:…

This diary should be nuked: https://mgoblog.com/diaries/covid-forida-update-those-traveling-orange-bowl

The author presents themselves as an expert and gives an incredibly rosy-take on the COVID situation in Florida while making numerous errors (such as presenting a 15% positivity rate with no context and suggesting that omicron isn't as prevalent as delta yet in Florida [when it overtook it last week]). More importantly, their diary focuses on the positive outcome for vaccinated people (which is good news) while ignoring any of the greater context of potential outcomes. It is a disservice to public health.

The authors comments have also veered heavily into politics, including suggesting a governor is under attack by the MSM and even bringing up CRT for some reason...

And there is no reason it…

And there is no reason it should be right now. If you are presenting yourself as an expert on this issue you should know why...

Yet all the warning signs are there right now. In Miami, cases increased by 4 fold last week. Wastewater levels are similarly spiking. Positivity jumped from near 0 to 16%.

You are correct that the vaccinated will be fine (especially if boosted). Yet by telling people to "live without fear" right now you are showing a lack of compassion for your old peers, the unvaccinated populations, their family members, and anyone else who needs to visit a hospital for unrelated reasons. If I'm wrong some people miss a football game. What happens if you are wrong?

This is one of the rosiest…

This is one of the rosiest interpretations of our current COVID situation. For example, I'm not sure anyone would consider a 15% (now 16%) positivity rate good (it should drop with increased testing), especially considering it was near 0 a few weeks ago. Other things to consider:

- if omicron isn't the prevalent version in Florida right now it will be by next game time based on everything we've seen elsewhere.

- while the strain is good for the individual (best current estimates are hospitalization rate down by half), it appears to be double digits more transmissable (read terrible for the hospitals).

- it isn't about individual outcomes right now. It is about not overwhelming the healthcare system (for hopefully the last time).

People who are vaccinated are less likely to show severe symptoms (thus consuming shared resources) and less likely to spread to others when they get it (not no spread, but still less).

Unfortunately the data the…

Unfortunately the data the public has access to isn't complete, but it does say that 66% of the diagnosed Covid cases in Washtenaw county were from those age 18-22 (from 10/1 to 10/14). You can bet a lot of it is spread amongst UM students, that likely has gotten worse in the last week (and public officials likely have access to more specific data, including positivity rates).

As a scientist it seems pretty logical that you'd restrict the segment of your population creating the spread in hopes you don't have to lock down the whole county.

1) Here is a link about the WHO statement. It is being taken way out of context. As a someone with a PhD in a medical related field, this post 1) makes me very sad and 2) is full of misinformation. You are attacking straw man arguments left and right ("masks don't work if you sit directly by someone for hours", "people don't know data modelling therefore we shouldn't do anything", "there are no controls therefore we can't take any actions"). Add in inaccuracies about reality "the only thing the typical masks protect from is if a mask wearer is experiencing above average respiration", "people were needlessly placed on ventilators, which very likely hastened their deaths and/or long term complications" and I'm frankly depressed.

This isn't some scam.

"In this cohort study including 100 patients recently recovered from COVID-19 identified from a COVID-19 test center, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed cardiac involvement in 78 patients (78%) and ongoing myocardial inflammation in 60 patients (60%)"

EDIT: the abstract I quoted above is actually a bit misleading (but not to the level the above poster is suggesting). Here is the full recruitment methodology for those who care: "his is a prospective observational cohort study of 100 patients diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 by reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction on swab test of the upper respiratory tract who fulfilled inclusion criteria for this CMR investigation. This study followed the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) reporting guideline (eFigure in the Supplement). Participants were identified from the University Hospital Frankfurt COVID-19 Registry, covering for the area of the State of Hesse, Germany, and were recruited between April and June 2020. All participants were considered eligible after a minimum of 2 weeks from the original diagnosis if they had resolution of respiratory symptoms and negative results on a swab test at the end of the isolation period. Patients recently recovered from COVID-19 referred for a clinical CMR due to active cardiac symptoms were not included in this analysis."

Counter-point RE: this season: the Marlins.

1) Testing services that…

1) Testing services that take too long. 2-3 day turnaround when you play every day means players are playing while infected.

2) Playing games after players on a team test positive. 4 Marlins tested positive yesterday yet the team still played. Now 8 more today. If this spread to the Phillies then it was completely preventable.

3) Not going for a bubble.
