Gameday next week?

Submitted by Kingpin74 on October 22nd, 2022 at 11:21 PM

We're getting it, right? K State is about to lose, Syracuse already lost, and I don't see another game that makes more sense. I guess they could go to the Cocktail Party in Jacksonville, but I doubt in a close call that they would promote the CBS game over their own game that night. Plus I'm guessing Herbstreit is doing the game and then wouldn't have to travel. OSU-PSU is probably a better overall game, but Big Noon is already going and I doubt they'd pick PSU over Mich as the home site after we just smashed them.

Gameday does not come to a game with a team that is 3-4, ever.  This is a ridiculous thought, and to have its own thread is embarrassing.  Penn state will be near top10 against #2 osu.  Top 20 Kentucky vs #3 Tennessee is obvious over our game, too.

Hey Kingpin, you shouldn't be getting grief for posing the question.

My thoughts are that the show has become too glitzy, they try to be cute too often like they do with every thing they do anymore, it's annoying as hell. Stick to the meat and potatoes of the sport, that's why we watch, not to have them try to be funny or cool or whatever the fuck else they think will work.

Another annoying thing is bringing Pat McAfee on in such a prominent role, he's such a blowhard know-it-all, FFS STFU sometimes Patty Boy! His picks are awful and he picked Iowa and PSU to beat us, lmao. It sure seems like they're slowly but surely phasing Corso out in a subtle way. I'm glad Pollack's role has lessened because he's a know-it-all blowhard as well.

Obviously I still watch because I love college football so much, the FOX Pregame has Turdan Meyer on it and I can't stand him, he still won't say Michigan, always referring to us as The Wolverines, grow up asshole and be professional, what a complete douche he is.

In conclusion, I would never give a fuck if Gameday ever goes to A2 again and with them not having B1G Games to do in the future, it probably will hardly ever happen unless the game we're playing is so compelling.

I don't think he's getting grief for posing the question. I think he's getting grief for asserting we're likely to get it and are the best game on the board.

As far as Gameday being too cute by half, I like that they mix it up with locations so that they're not always on the same six campuses.

Agree on McAfee. I could do without him.

Yeah, I shouldn’t have phrased it like that. It’s obviously not a sure thing when a 3-4 team is involved. But when the two best games involve a team that already hosted twice and the other network’s pregame show and broadcast, and there are no other obvious candidates, I think we have a decent shot more as a showcase for our own program and their own ABC broadcast (if they choose a Power 5 game for Gameday, which they might not). As many have noted, Gameday has gone to the same site as Big Noon including some of our games. But the bar seems higher for that, and PSU just got smashed by us like I said above. So I thought the door might be open. It’s a good game, but not quite a can’t miss game where both networks need to go (like M-MSU and M-OSU last year). But they could still choose OSU-PSU and I wouldn’t be surprised.

1. I've never seen them go to the same place 3 times in a season, have you?

2. I don't, they did it for M-MSU last year. But that was a matchup of two undefeated teams that they couldn't ignore. I figured with the business of TV, if they have any sort of opportunity, they'll promote their own game over FOX' and take away from their coverage. PSU-OSU is a better game, but I don't think it's some blockbuster they can't miss. And again, we just beat up PSU.

3. They might not.

Good, good.  Bring all the media, all the talking heads, all the amplification.

Time to bury Sharty in most embarrassing fashion on the national stage, while all the pundits wax poetic about UM's dominance and resurgance.

I am a huge Michigan fan, but I don't see any interest nationally for any upcoming Michigan game other than OSU, and even then...   assuming both of us are still undefeated.   Most of the country has little to no interest in B1G football right now.   Tv is all about ratings.

Michigan isn't just any B1G program.  Every one of our games is in the top 10 nationally for ratings that week, and often top 5.  There's a reason Fox covered us in their Big Noon four weeks in a row.

The Game will get Gameday, that's a very safe bet.  That was - by far - the highest-rated game in the 2021 regular season.

There's a chance Illinois will get it, too.  If it weren't the week before the Game, I'd strongly predict it, since Illinois is probably going to win the West.  But because of the timing of the game, that might be the week they make their token visit to an FCS school or similar.

I agree with you that it’s all about ratings. But that is part of the reason why the OP may not be so crazy to propose Gameday in AA next week. Not saying it will happen - the PSU / OSU game is a better matchup - but for the past two seasons, M games have consistently been amongst the most watched. We have a huge and passionate alumni base, especially in the larger markets on the coasts. That said, I still don’t think that our “rivalry” game against a 3-4 sparty is a big enough draw. That rivalry is more local than National.

What are you talking about? The Big Ten is consistently the strongest ratings draw as a conference, nationally. The SEC is typically second.

Granted, Michigan-MSU probably doesn't have national interest but that's mainly because MSU is bad, which means that game really only has local implications. But to say the Big Ten generally isn't a draw is flat out wrong.

Man this season we are getting like negative levels of IQ threads. Take your vitamins folks, drink some water, be smarter. Y’all sound like you should be posting on RCMB instead of mgoblog

I’m not sure what the big deal is. I asked if a TV show might come here next week when it’s a slow schedule and the best game is already on another network with another pregame show and involves a home team that we just embarrassed (but apparently not as embarrassed as I should be for broaching this ridiculous subject). Even if I’m wrong, who cares? This was a good reminder to lurk and not post.

Kingpin - good stuff, I respect all of your responses and hope you know my blog arrogance is learned and normal (but not admirable).  You showed more humility than most.  I have had some posts that got slammed much harder - I learned and ‘grew’ as a blogger. 😆 sounds ridiculous, but I did! Yet, being quite active, I continue to make regrettable comments on the regular.  Ask my wife of 18 years - I’m a true work in progress.

“I doubt they'd pick PSU over Mich as the home site after we just smashed them.”

That would never go into the decision making. It’s all about the matchup of two ranked teams playing that day.

Yeah - I’d bet a good chunk of money they go to Jackson, Mississippi.

I think GameDay has only been on campus at a HBCU once (Florida A&M back in 2008) - and with Deion being at JSU, JSU being undefeated, Southern being one of the better teams in the SWAC themselves, and this being JSU’s last home game of the year, a lot of things line up.

Ann Arbor is still on the table for Week 12 (Illinois).
