Drew Sharp has died
Just saw on Twitter that Drew Sharp died this morning. Pretty crazy, he was fairly young.
Edit: Freep link warning, but it's the only site with an article up so far:

"Drew Sharp, a Detroit Free Press columnist since 1999, died this morning at his home in Bloomfield Hills. He was 56."

Trying to provoke a negative reaction should not be part of good sports journalism. If the negative reaction comes as a byproduct from a good piece of writing, then so be it.

don't think that is necessarily true. In all "artistic" endeavors, there are different purposes to every form of expression. Some movies are meant to piss you off. American History X was intended to draw a visceral negative response. Some music is intended to provoke anger, BYOB and pretty much anything by Rage Against the Machine are perfect examples. Some books are written to make you uncomfortable, The Silence of the Lambs and Animal Farm are good examples of this.
Wojo wants to make you laugh. Album often wants to make you think. Sharp wanted to make you mad, and in this he succeeded with flying colors.

Albom does often make me think. For instance, I think "why did I just read that?" and "how is this guy a successful author?" and "did he really just end another article with a one-sentence paragraph?" and similar thoughts.

Tell that to Skip Bayless.

Me too.

Even before seeing this I said to myself: "I've got to start eating right."
Hope he made peace with his maker.

Jeff Seidel's article is interspersed with the number of times he'd been with him in the last couple weeks with a running chorus of "He looked fine, I keep thinking. He looked fine."
[Random weirdness: autocorrect changed "weeks" to "wakes."]

57 here too- I used to post here a bit last year and then realized how much of my time I wasted
You will not look back at your life and say "I wish I had posted more"
Life is too short to waste in internet wars- get off the web and live more- spend time with those you love and cherish the hours
Nothing sucks away life like the internet- it is a soul killer

I just heard the shocking news on WTKA. Drew was at U-M when I was there. My thoughts are with the family.

Wow. Way too young, and very sudden too. I could be missing something, but I never heard or saw a story about him having any long-term health problems, but sometimes.....wow.
As a general note to everyone, I know he is not a beloved figure here by any means, but do keep it respectful all the same.

Thoughts with his family. Life is very short and it's scary to think how fast it can be taken.

Growing up (I'm 25 now) I always had animosity towards Sharp for his articles that IMO were overly critical towards Michigan and Detroit sports in general. However, as I've gotten a little older, I respected his objectivity and actually found his articles and his opinions very interesting.
What I was looking forward to most is when Michigan won a national title and Sharp being forced to write something nice about Michigan. Freep, DetNews, Mlive, and this blog are all part of my daily scanning for Michigan content. Freep will never be the same.
Although he was the blog's enemy, he was a hell of a writer and gone way, way too soon.
He was part of what makes sports fun.
RIP Drew Sharp

You are wise beyond your 25 yrs. Are you sure you did not transpose the numbers and you are really 52? Good post. I could not have said it better.

I'm going to miss him a lot actually. I really hope his family, friends, and co workers can find peace with this heart breaking news.

I purposely avoided his columns, but he may have been a fine friend, and husband. 56 is way too young and I feel for his loved ones having him die so soon and with so little warning.

Even though I didn't like most of his takes, this is still way to early. It's very sad this guy won't be able to make me angry for years to come.
