After 342 new COVID-19 cases in 3 weeks, MSU students urged to self-quarantine

"Health officials are strongly recommending Michigan State University students living in or near East Lansing self-quarantine immediately following a surge in COVID-19 cases.

At least 342 people affiliated with the university have tested positive for the disease caused by the novel coronavirus since Aug. 24, according to the Ingham County Health Department.

Nearly all of those people are students, according to health department spokeswoman Amanda Darche.

That's compared to just 23 people affiliated with MSU testing positive in the three weeks before the surge, according to a press release from the department."

My guess is this "strong recommendation" doesn't actually get implemented (lots of people, esp young people, normally don't listen to health recommendations -- why would now be different?), but it certainly will affect the thoughts of the MSU administration.

I know there was an expectation / hope from some that there is some sort imminent vote by university presidents that will restart the season on October 10. With news like this (and the postponement of games like VA Tech / UVa), along with other items (e.g., the recent statement by the Rutgers president), I don't see how that happens. Best we can hope for is a season that start in January, mirrored with the Pac-12 so there can be a "Rose Bowl" game at the end.

I'm sort of surprised that many kids get sick off campus.  I know there are some large dorm-style off campus apartments in EL but I sort of assumed the breakouts would be limited.

And yes, I could insert a joke about the student body but at this point no student body is really immune to being dragged.

Which part is surprising? Students had to sign leases before remote learning was announced, so they might as well live there and have a bit of fun instead of sitting at home. The article says a bunch of the infected attended parties and/or are part of greek community. Seems like a surge is pretty much expected, no?

I must live in a bubble zone because most everyone I know here in west mi, young and old, really don’t give a shit about covid-19.  I imagine the students feel the same.  Going to be like herding cats to try and get them to self quarantine.

I definitely don't think it will have a big impact. The only thing that might happen is county health dept might have the police be more aggressive at shutting down obviously large house parties. But that's it.

I just bring it up b/c it's another data point, along with the fact 12 MSU athletes recently tested positive (a 7% positive rate; that's not terrible, but not great), for the MSU president (and perhaps others, observing MSU) to say, "Nope, we don't have a handle on this" and firm up their No vote for fall football.

I really would blame more of this on the student body than the administration. I’m currently a grad student at MSU and next to no one is on campus during the day as almost all classes (both grad and undergrad) are online. Naturally this hasn’t stopped many of the students who came back to live here anyway from doing what college kids do. I moved to EL because I was initially informed I would be having some in-person instruction (which in some cases I do), but I don’t see much of a reason for undergrads to be here except to not live with their parents and party.

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that why we are still sharing articles about 'cases', the most useless and misunderstood metric in virology, KEVIN WARREN'S SON. takes the field at 3:30 pm on CBS for Mississippi State.

When asked why he felt it was ok for his son to play, KEVIN WARREN responded, "we weighed the risks as a family and decided it was safe!"

Let that shit sink in and maybe ask yourselves some questions.

Do you really believe all that QAnon BS? Do you honestly believe that politicians and celebrities are smart and secretive enough to build a global network with the sole purpose of eating children?

Are you aware that the ideas pushed by QAnon are reused from older theories? The ideas are plagiarized from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion that formed the basis of Mein Kampf. If it were reasonable you’d think that they wouldn’t have followed a 100 year old book of antisemitic conspiracy theories don’t you? I mean if I were an evil doer I’d try not to reuse the last great conspiracy and try to be a bit more secretive. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Protocols_of_the_Elders_of_Zion

Such a waste of time...just get together and let it run through the student population once and for all. Get it over with, there is no other way.

A vaccine is a pipe dream and this poses next to 0 risk for 18-22 year old students. Quarantine the faculty and let it run through the student body over the next two weeks. Start up school again after that, problem solved.

I am getting really tired of this “grandpa” argument. I think grandma and gramma are smart enough to look out for themselves. If they are worried about their health, they should stay home and do go to East Lansing to visit the grandchildren.

The old and the ill always have been and always will be at risk for every contagious disease that is going around. We don’t need to stop the world for every cold virus or flu bug that is in the air.

You realize this only kills the sickest of the sick and extremely old, no? Do you think they will live forever if not for this virus?

do you have any idea the quality of life in LTC or life expectancy there? It’s less than a year - trade your economic future for 5 months sounds like a really stupid idea but that’s what you’re advocating.

enjoy your high horse when you’ve lost everything you’ve worked for....I’m sure your kids will be super impressed you traded their future for grandma and grandpa who then died anyway a year later.

So I know that you won't listen to any reason, but for anyone who is still wondering,  this "next to no risk for 18-22 year olds"...is not correct. It assumes that there are ONLY two outcomes: 1) death, or 2) no problems whatsoever. That's not true.

Second, "let it run through the student body" is the same as saying, "once everyone who is going to die from this is dead, then we're all safer." It also assumes a lasting immunity a la chickenpox,  which hasn't been proven.

Third, it's terrifying to me that, once you discount the possiblity of a vaccine, your only solution is to deliberately let people get sick. Every single country which got a hold on COVID has done so under the same circumstances we were under, without a vaccine.

You truly embody the "we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas" mentality.

You do know Sweden exists, right? And they haven’t had any of the problems you’re worried about but go ahead and keep thinking we are all going to die or have long term health issues.

Wuhan, no vaccine, no long term issues either.

But yes, we’re all gonna die.....or have a heart issue . Lock us up!

Also, do the math on the vaccine for fucks sake. If only 40% take it and it’s only 40% effective that means only 16% of the population will have immunity? If that’s enough for you to go back to normal, why aren’t we there now when about 15% are estimated to have been infected?

Yeah, total BS.

Just lock us up and let society crumble so the longest living generation in history can keep going another maybe 5-12 months.

Great idea...can’t wait to hear all you idiots backtrack when Biden wins and this all immediately goes away. Suddenly the tests will be “faulty” and this will be a slight worse year than the flu.

When I was 21 in college I wouldn't have given a flying fuck about something I had a 99.9% chance of surviving.  Especially when I'm at school essentially quarantined with other kids who have a 99.9% chance of surviving it.

And if you're trying to say that you would have a different attitude then I'm sure you were tons of fun to be around when you were younger.

My 22 yr old daughter was a nurse in the covid unit in Toledo for the 1st five months of the outbreak and caught the virus. Of course the hospital wasn’t testing employees so the only way she knew was she completely lost her sense of taste one morning and had some congestion. She was also around my wife and I but luckily we never caught it.
