So... Does this mean Notre Dame is NOT a destination job?

I would think he'd be a better fit with the Vikings, given his proclivity for turning purple.

Outstanding!

This comment should allow one free ticket back from Bolivia.

If some think Harbaugh is too intense for the NFL, I can't imagine any grown adult would want to play for Kelly

so there's that. Not that it has worked very well for him at ND. Also, he has a horrendous record with young QBs -- why would the Bears turn Trubisky over to him?
Oh, yeah, because Bears.
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:48 AM ^
Wrong place.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:25 PM ^
The Bears are hopeless screwups when it comes to roster management, scouting, and coaching.
January 23rd, 2018 at 2:53 PM ^
They actually appeared to know what they were doing with this coaching hire, including the staff hires under him, and their last two drafts have been pretty strong. Obviously, the 2017 one does hinge significantly on Trubisky, but he wasn't bad for a rookie this year particularly considering he had no one to throw to at all - top receivers injured in camp, then top TE's leg nearly broke off. The most dynamic receiver was actually a rookie running back.
The Bears did hire a Notre Dame coach - they hired ND's OL coach. Considering ND might have two lineman taken in the first round of year's draft, that guy might know what he's doing.

that left this year knew the BK was possibly on his way out.
January 23rd, 2018 at 6:39 PM ^
Given what we know about BK, and given the enthusiasm with which they departed, I might suggest that they were more worried that he wasn't on his way out.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:36 PM ^
In the Bears' defense, they ended up hiring Nagy over Kelly, so at least they didn't screw that one up
January 23rd, 2018 at 5:30 PM ^
for using "Bears" and "defense" in a single sentence about events in this millenium.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:22 PM ^
Good for Michigan, good for the Lions.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:37 PM ^
I think most people in this thread are missing the fact that, even if Kelly interviewed, he didn't get the job. Nagy was hired almost three weeks ago...

You'd play if the $$$ was right.
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:29 AM ^
Who'd almost certainly be their coach if Kelly leaves.
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:31 AM ^
Not that he would leave OSU, but I wouldn't mind seeing old Urban head out to South Bend.

ND grad here. A prof of mine noted that Urban had a deal done in principle, but asked for 1 or 2 recruits 'off the books' meaning outside of the normal standards.
It went up to the provost, who denied the request. That's how Urban landed in Florida.
So I heard.

Might have been 1-2 per class. Which makes more sense. If ND had 4 Percy Harvin's and 4 Janoris Jenkins, they'd be much scarier in September.
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:50 AM ^
I also know someone "connected" at ND and he heard the same thing about 1-2 requests per class.
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:53 AM ^
per class and they'd just be much scarier in general.

So, there's this new invention. It's called punctuation. You could possibly give it a try.

Nobody said ND turned Urban away. It was quite the opposite. He went to UF after they refused to lower their acceptance standards.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:00 PM ^
Yes, good school and I will take other's words for it that their admittance standards are notably higher than most: That said, they are rarely out of the 15 in annual recruiting along with those that would let convicted murders on campus so I don't buy that.
Also, screw them.

I doubt he'd leave OSU either, because ND is at best a lateral move at this point. The academic requirements are much stricter, and he'd effectively be starting over again when he already has a fine-tuned machine in Columbus. He'd definitely get ND into the playoffs at some point in the next few years, but still, it's starting over. The only reason he'd leave is if he felt a personal calling to go there.
But Meyer did put ND up as one of his two dream jobs at some point, so if Kelly does end up leaving I suppose its at least within the realm of possibility. I bet ND would at least make him an offer and force him to say no.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:44 PM ^
IIRC, the out clause in Urban's contract way back when was for THREE schools: Michigan, OSU, and ND.
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:39 AM ^
What's Bob's connection to ND?
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:28 PM ^
He grew up in a Catholic home and was a Notre Dame fan. Other than that, he doesn't have much of a connection to the football program. He was not interested in the ND job after Bob Davie was fired in 2001, Tyrone Willingham in 2004, and Charlie Weis in 2009. The positions that came closest to prying him away from the Sooners during his run there were the Cleveland Browns and the Flordia Gators.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
Stops grew up Catholic (not sure of his current religious status) and went to Cardinal Mooney HS in Youngstown, OH. He has long listed ND as a dream job.

Are we sure Stoops wants to coach again?
