are now in the offensive kitchen? Drevno, Hamilton, Enos, and Warriner--all have been OCs recently I believe--plus Harbaugh

The one thing I give Harbaugh a ton of credit for is that he doesn't seem to just hire guys he knows and has worked with. He tries to find guys that he thinks makes the program better. The opportunity to put a really great staff together exists, IF he can get it delegated and organized the right way.

that's his job. The man has 30+ years of experience. Do you really need to bring in someone with that resume (who, mind you, already has a job coaching) to break down film and draw up scouting reports? There are coaches on this board who can do that work. He will be much, much more involved than that.

The other option is that he really, really dislikes PJ Fleck.

I'd expect that analyst spot has some fingerprints on situational and opponent-specific gameplanning. With advances in film/opponent scouting you need skilled guys working on short yardage, third down, red zone, etc. gameplans weeks ahead of matchups. Seems better to have a college guy with intimate knowledge of opponents than an NFL guy like Turner in that role.

It sounds like he might be coming in as an offensive analyst, which would be great. If he somehow took over at OC I'd be pissed. He was run out of OSU for being a terrible OC and only got a job at Minnesota as an OL coach. He seems like the type of guy who's good as a position coach, but anything more is too much for him.

I’ve always thought it was a shame that the willingness to walk to Ann Arbor was so high on the list of the job criteria that Brandon used to make that hire. There’s no question that Hoke loved Michigan, but the same is true of almost everyone on this board.

Yeah, just look at his team results. Terrible. Co OC from 2012-2016, right? 2012 undefeated. 2013, 12-2 2014 National Champions 2015, 12-1 2016, 11-2 I mean, Harbaugh doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing hiring coaches with that kind of record. Good thing you’re around to tell him.

He was OC that entire time, with those results, and was run out of town and his next job was a clear demotion. What does that say about him?

Also, OSU's S&P+ offensive ranks while Warriner was there:

2012: 16

2013: 2

2014: 1

2015: 20

2016: 23

2017: 7

Guess which year his Co-OC Tom Herman left? Answer is after 2014. Guess which year Warriner was run out of Columbus? Answer is after 2016. He was given the most stocked cupboard offensively you could ask for and could barely put together a top 20 offense. You think he would do any better here?

Also glad to know OC's now get credit's for W/L record now. Can we bring back Mike DeBord? We went 11-2 with him in 2006 you know.

He and Tim Beck were a failure as OCs. If he is the OL coach I would think he would do an excellent job. The OL were not very good in 2011 before he took over and sent a bunch to the NFL. Oh and he inherited Bollmans horrible offensive line recruiting in 2012. Ie he did it without a 2014 type roster at OSU.

I hate to say it, but all of those numbers taken together are more impressive than our recent results on offense. But beyond numbers, they won games. More games than Michigan. People who know how to coach game winning teams are good to have.

Actually, don't. There is no comparison.

I mean, surely Harbaugh isn't gonna make this guy just an analyst. If that IS the plan, I know I'm not alone in thinking that adding more line cooks to an already crowded kitchen sounds wonky at best.

Harbaugh will either truly shake-up the top of the O staff or another bad season will surely force his hand.

We'll see. I personally think Shea is gonna be an overnight sensation. Just how sensational hangs in the balance of these decisions though, it seems.

Does it feel weird that we are hiring assistants/analysts with different offensive philosophies (ex warriner vs Enos)? There isn't a consistent philosophy and identity we are trying to implement. (Serious question, not trying to be a negative Nancy)

Maybe that's the point. The analysts can look into opposing defenses (especially if they have experience on those teams in the past) and the breadth of offensive philosophies can inform how best to attack a particular opponent in a given week.

Just a guess on my part.

He was a co-OC under Urban Meyer running Meyer's offense. What he has is knowledge about how that offense works. He was a coach for a long time at quite a few stops before OSU.

Good coaches shouldn't be shoehorned into some specialty. Good coaches can typically coach different positions, different schemes and players with different skill sets. What they bring is knowledge and an ability to teach and recruit.

There are some exceptions, of course, but Warriner is typical in that he's had experience with teams running a variety of offenses.

Does anyone know if Jamie Morris made any comments regarding further changes to the offensive staff yesterday? Someone on another board stated Jamie insinuated the change would not be minor.

In his freshman year I believe, someone asked him what he wanted to do after football. He said his goal was to be head coach at Michigan someday. Sure enough after his playing days he got into coaching. Really it’s all about rooting for him to succeed and maybe just maybe he will reach his goal someday.
