David Peters (Brandon's father) on Shea Patterson per Sam Webb

Submitted by Blue in Paradise on

Sam Webb interviewed David Peters (Brandon's father) in regards to the Shea Patterson transfer and discussed on his show this morning.

Summary

  • The Patterson family were the ones to reach out to Michigan (we already knew that)
  • Harbaugh sat down with each of the QBs and commits to explain the situation
  • Michigan initially passed on Shea as they did not have a roster spot open at QB
  • After Wilton informed the staff about his grad transfer, Harbaugh reconsidered Patterson's interest to transfer
  • David Peters said that Michigan NEEDED ANOTHER QB for depth so of course they should go after the best available
  • David Peters said that his son was raised to compete and not run from a challenge
  • Brandon said that he doesn't care if they bring in 30 more QBs, nobody is taking the job from him

I hope this shuts up all the doom and gloomers and ends their concern trolling that Peters is going to transfer now that the Patterson transfer is official.  I never thought once that Peters was going to transfer in 2018 based on Patterson (2019 could be another story based on how the competition plays out).

Sam didn't mention McCaffrey but I can't imagine (given his family background) that he is scared of competition either - besides Patterson is two eligibility classes away from DCaff so that makes no sense in any case.

I am irrationally excited about 2018 and can't wait to see 3 stud QBs battle it out to be the starter next year.

Was it from the same source which said we'll have trouble stopping Miss St running back in our bowl game against South Carolina?

I've had to boycott them, ESPN is only good if you like auto-playing ads, highlight wheels and biased at a glance information by people who haven't done any research.

Speight goes out, Patterson comes in, that is a real upgrade.

I had thought Speight had left because he heard Patterson was in the works.  In this light it makes no sense at all, unless he was simply afraid he would never beat Peters again for the job (or Harbaugh encouraged it???).  Disappointing, but works out well for us.

This is unquestionably good stuff. I've been wearing the equivocating eeyore hat through this transfer process and Peters leaving has been a concern; it sounds like transfers aren't a concern through the 2018 season at least and I love the "nobody is taking the job from me" attitude.

Which is not to say that transfers won't happen, because it's not 1970 anymore and QBs transfer to get playing time occasionally. I suspect McCaffrey may be spectacular, so I really want him to stay, but spending a couple of years on the bench isn't going to hurt him at all.

What's important here is that Peters appears to have the "bring it" attitude that he needs to own the job. That should inform his workrate both right now as he is The Man right up through January 1 and in the offseason as he prepares for spring and fall camp. His biggest weakness has been a limited knowledge of the playbook and reads; I expect him to have that stuff down by next fall, possibly with significant improvement visible in Tampa.

After 2018 plays out I suspect things will shuffle again, and transfers can still be on the table. But getting to that point with all of the bullets on the roster is important and this is reassuring.

*BTW Patterson isn't coming here to be depth, he's coming here to start, but the people arguing that depth was a driving necessity in Patterson coming have been proven correct and I have been proven to be wrong.

So he likely could go the Malzone path and do a 3 year grad transfer if he is 2nd or 3rd on the depth chart going into 2019.  Btw/ I don't think that it will happen - just saying "if"...

I would have no problem if that happened and wish him the best wherever he chose to go.  One of the 2019 QBs should be ready to be 3rd string by 2019 so it would work for all parties.

I think Peters is on track to graduate after 2018, so he can grad transfer and play immediately.

The main point is that a lot can happen. Starting-quality QBs stuck on the bench frequently transfer. Guys get discouraged or injured. Stuff happens. Expecting a steady progression of Patterson to Peters to McCaffrey is nice but it leaves one liable to be disappointed when things change.

Everyone was surprised when Wilton Speight came on the field against Minnesota, because we didn't expect Morris to RS and transfer. Few expected Speight to transfer, either. Last year at this time Jacob Eason was the QB of the future at Georgia; now he's likely gone. Things change.

studs 3 deep should mitigate the risk that we have a QB meltdown in the big games next year.

McCaffrey will be spectacular and he has already put on 10-15 lbs (based on reports) since he got to campus but probably needs another 20 lbs to be a viable QB for an entire season.

50/50 on whether he can get there by next September but he will be ready to rock and roll for 2019.

that Harbaugh pushed Speight out of the team or there was a mutual handshake between the two. Harbaugh was clearly caught off guard with Speight transferring that he reconsidered the Patterson transfer decision.

Love the attitude. Frankly, nobody should feel entitled/anointed as a starter after 4 games and 4 TD passes anyway. Sounds like Peters' dad raised his kid the right way. I still believe Brandon has a massive future at Michigan. LETS GO.

This is the exact kind of answer you want to see from someone who legitimately could be our starter for the next few years. You start to worry about a players fortitude if they bitch and moan about added competition, but it seems like peters is embracing it which can only make him a better player.

Is exactly what I expected out of Peters.

That’s how my father raised me and how is raise my sons and daughter.

So glad to hear this from Mr. Peters.

Never be intimidated by a challenge or challenger.

Need to have 3 ready. Cannot imagine Shea coming to Ann Arbor without a good idea of his path to playing time. Milton needs a year anyway. Physically he's going to be tough to keep off the field. Should be no complaints about the QB spot going forward. It's loaded with 4 and 5 stars.

I miss the days that I didn't have a clue about which player was being recruited or what players may or may not transfer and I just enjoyed watching each team as I saw them on the field that year. But, I can't seem to stop craving daily info on the program. It's kind of taken a little of the enjoyment I had watching in the 90's away.

If Patterson is not eligible this next season, the job will belong to Peters and it will be all the harder for Shea to get it from him.  But if Patterson is eligible this year, it should be the hottest competition we've seen since Henson vs. Brady.

So say P(B ∪ D ∪ S)=(1-0.3)(1-0.25)(1-.35) =66%chance of All conference level QB play. Rounded of course for significance ±‰ Feel free to check my work.

Range from...

"Interesting..."

"When is Peters transferring?  Becasue JH 'always' bringing in a transfer (is Ruddock, O'Korn, and now Patterson)......."

"We want Peters to be the starter because Patterson has more game experience and would be more of a threat...."

The general impression I get is that:

A) They are of course happy to be holding the upper hand in the rivalry over the past 10 years, BUT.....

B) They are well aware that JH does NOT equal RR and Hoke.  Those previous 7 years was too easy for them.  Now it is actually a game.  And the more realist know they stole the first one, though they will only mutter it in a low tone.....

They are well aware that each year now, it is no longer a cake walk for them.  As for their disrepect attitude, they get it from the flack that some Michigan fans are giving acting like the rivalry has changed while the results are not there........yet.....

The proper attittude for an MSU fan is to be hoping Dantonio can squeeze a couple more upsets out of his limited roster before the juggernaut Harbaugh is assembling restores that rivalry to its natural order.  "Now it's a game" connotes an insufficient level of demoralization.  The question they need to be asking is, "when do the annual curb-stompings resume?"

I think given the makeup and quality of the two teams, with JH as the coach, UM will almost always beat MSU if the UM QB outplays the MSU QB.  That wasn't always the case, but will be, now and for the foreseeable future, as long as JH is coach.
