David Peters (Brandon's father) on Shea Patterson per Sam Webb

Submitted by Blue in Paradise on

Sam Webb interviewed David Peters (Brandon's father) in regards to the Shea Patterson transfer and discussed on his show this morning.

Summary

  • The Patterson family were the ones to reach out to Michigan (we already knew that)
  • Harbaugh sat down with each of the QBs and commits to explain the situation
  • Michigan initially passed on Shea as they did not have a roster spot open at QB
  • After Wilton informed the staff about his grad transfer, Harbaugh reconsidered Patterson's interest to transfer
  • David Peters said that Michigan NEEDED ANOTHER QB for depth so of course they should go after the best available
  • David Peters said that his son was raised to compete and not run from a challenge
  • Brandon said that he doesn't care if they bring in 30 more QBs, nobody is taking the job from him

I hope this shuts up all the doom and gloomers and ends their concern trolling that Peters is going to transfer now that the Patterson transfer is official.  I never thought once that Peters was going to transfer in 2018 based on Patterson (2019 could be another story based on how the competition plays out).

Sam didn't mention McCaffrey but I can't imagine (given his family background) that he is scared of competition either - besides Patterson is two eligibility classes away from DCaff so that makes no sense in any case.

I am irrationally excited about 2018 and can't wait to see 3 stud QBs battle it out to be the starter next year.

I think given the makeup and quality of the two teams, with JH as the coach, UM will almost always beat MSU if the UM QB outplays the MSU QB.  That wasn't always the case, but will be, now and for the foreseeable future, as long as JH is coach.

They get their disrespect from that chip that all MSU freshman get surgically inserted into their shoulder.  Work has been again awful this year - whereas last yr they were all silent.  I never said a word to anyone all last season, yet this year I get comments constantly.  It has nothing to do with them getting flack, it comes from within.

I also appreciate the insight into how Harbaugh handled the situation.  Looks like Harbaugh was very transparent and reasonable with everyone involved--not that I didn't expect this, but to have confirmation of it is nice.

Love the quote from Brandon. It remains to be seen whether he said it because that's what he's supposed say or whether he really means it. But that's the beautiful thing about football. You get to prove your mettle on the field. Go get it, Brandon!

But if I came into work tomorrow and was told they're bringing in another guy that I have to compete with for my job I'd probably tell my boss to go fuck himself.

Well, after I found a new job anyway.

I think we will be KILLING it in 2019.  Unless there are multiple catastrophes, 2019 looks very likely to be a NC run (great team and easier schedule pretty much gaurantees it).

I think 2018 also has a chance of being great (I can easily see us going 11-1 or even 12-0) though if we get into the playoffs in 2018, we will likely lose in the first game.

I think that the reason people are so excited about 2018 is because the two biggest weaknesses on the team were LT and QB.  QB might still be one of the biggest weaknesses but feels like it been really shored up.

I think Peters, Patterson, and McCaffrey are going to push each other. Factor in more experience at the WR position, Gentry and McKeon coming into their own, and we could shred defenses.

May the best man win, but I'm not going to lie.  I'm rooting for Brandon Peters.  It takes confidence and guts to play behind our OLine this year, and then face a QB competition like this.  I hope he wins the job in the Spring.

I like the attitude, I must say. Almost like a younger Harbaugh.

For all the "Oh noes" that even a few Michigan fans engaged in surrounding the addition of Patterson, hopefully you can see in his words that he welcomes not only the addition but the competition.

Yeah but the comments don’t actually change anything. I don’t think anyone was arguing that Peters would transfer now. Only that if he doesn’t win the job, he would likely transfer after the season. And I think that’s still likely if he doesn’t win the job. It would be in his best interest to transfer where he can start, like Speight. Also, there is no other comment that anyone could expect to hear — nobody is going to come out and say he doesn’t want to compete, particularly for the reasons above. Even if he now hates Harbaugh, Michigan, Patterson, and Jesus, it still doesn’t make a lot of sense to transfer until after this year.

you face intense competition at the QB position until you reach TB12 status.  So if you are going to get to the next level you have to work at it daily and not seek the path of lesser resistance to transfer.  I can't really think of any QB other than Russell Wilson who transferred for playing time and was rewarded with great success (and he was a baseball -> football transfer wasn't he (?))

No matter who 'wins' the QB competition the backup is 1 play away from going to lead the team.  We don't have a rock solid OL that's going to shunt all foils yet.  I was really worried when WS3 came in for the first time against Minnesota late after Rudock was impaled into the turf.  So its really valuable imo to have good backups.

Rudock, Speight, Peters and even OKorn have taken some *shots* over the last few years.  And that doesn't get into the D Gardner era.

The reality is Michigan brought in a stud QB to guide the team next year.  Sure there will be a competition but we all know who will be starting next year.  This is all show.  Have any of you ever been passed over for a promotion and your company brought someone in from the outside for a job you were lined up to get?

I think most of us at some time in our career have been there, and it totally sucks.  Now your not going to unload on your boss and quit right away.  The smart thing to do is put your tail between your legs and start looking for another job.

Now college football players are kind of like indentured servents, so these guys may be more inclined to stick it out.  However, actions speak louder than words and it's pretty clear the coaching staff felt the QB position needed an imediate upgrade which does't speek well for those already on the roster.

The size of the chip on Dantonio's shoulder is like a malignant tumor.  Every year this guy figures out a way to make it bigger, and gets his team to play harder because of it.  Sparty shouldn't fear Michigan because what have we done lately?  Flukey punt this, weather that, at the end of the day the score matters.  Hopefully the McCaffrey, Peters, Patterson competition will breed a healthy competition, and make them all better for it.  As fans we should all want that competition to feed these guys fury to be the best out there, but individually they might see it as more than they bargained for.

I hope they all stay, take their turn to be great, and work for their chance.  But if any of them leave for greener pastures, I wouldn't blame them.  I don't blame Speight for making that decision.  College football is big business and all these guys have hopes to going to the next level so they can earn their chance.  More power to them, and those who stay will hopefully, undenyably be the cream that rose to the top.

The guy that is getting the biggest raw deal is McCafferty.  Harbaugh goes with guys that have experience (O'Korn), and McCafferty has none.  Instead of getting second team snaps next year he will be pretty much in the same boat as he was this year, except he will have two incomming freshmen to share time with.
