OT - Russia banned from 2018 Winter Olympics...sort of
Still pretty unprecedented. Now if only the NCAA would grow a pair and follow suit on a select few schools south of the Mason Dixie line...

Good. Fuck Russia. For this and other bad acts they've recently committed.

They are not now, and have never been, our friends. Not since 1945 at least.

So glad we sold them all that uranium.

I'd link one of 300 articles that debunks your assertion here, but I think everyone knows what your response would be to an article from a legitimate media outlet.

...would be to overlook all the innovations they've brought the world in how to discretely assassinate political adversaries.

I still can't for the the life of me understand why Russia would want a roaring US economy, strong US military, decimated ISIS, secured borders, and tighter bonds with Israel.

Is this irony? The IOC banning the Russians for shady behavior?

Weren't many Russian athletes also banned from the Summer Olympics in 2016?
December 5th, 2017 at 2:12 PM ^
Hell yeah. KHL players were going to absolutely dominate without NHLers there. Now the US may have a chance at silver/bronze.
December 5th, 2017 at 9:11 PM ^
just read an article that if the KHL bans its players from participating that might actually hit Canada hard because apparently the KHL has the most canadian professional players after the NHL/AHL.
So Miracle on Ice pt. Deux! (asterisk)

So, if all those Russian athletes still get to compete, isn't that comparable to a school being stripped of a title for cheating but the school still considers themselves national champions for that year?
December 5th, 2017 at 2:53 PM ^
It's more like if all the players on Alabama that weren't taking any money still got to go play in the Sugar Bowl, but not any of the ones on the take, and the ones that did play had to wear plain white uniforms.
Not having the Russian flag in Pyeongchang is actually a pretty big deal. It's like a bowl ban. A really long one.
December 6th, 2017 at 9:48 AM ^
It's more like players from an intstitutional cheater, let's say Mississippi, transfer to a school that plays by the rules, let's say Michigan. They are allowed to compete.

How is this politics? Olympics is a fairly important sporting event.

It sounds like they still get to participate, if they so choose, representing "Nation" and with the ability to hear "Anthem" if any of them should prevail in an event. I was watching local news and they said that they would be able to do so and wear generic uniforms, which means that they probably wouldn't go with Oregon's uniforms since they are neither generic nor even tied to a specific event in Oregon lore.
